The subject of God is rarely talked about in modern society compared to traditional times because like in Kanye West’s song, Jesus Walks, “ If I talk about God my record won’t get played.” The unknown in society is scary to people which connects to the denial that God exists. As well as, the continuation of the inner human struggles. It is hard to look down at the world, and believe there is a God with all the evil in the world. In contrast, Kanye West declares that people are constantly at war with their environment, and believes the root of all conflict lies internally. A rap song that talks about God but has references to terrorism and racism which are both conflicts that this modern society deals with. The four-minute music video is a collection of stories of reprehensible characters; crafted into a modern biblical visual to signify the inner and outer conflicts of mankind. In the intro of the music video, there are drill sergeants commanding orders to his troops with. Also, in the beginning of the song drums over power which provides the foundation for a war effect. The beginning of the music video creates an imagery of modern day slavery. It draws attention to the aggressive interrogation methods police forces use against African Americans to confess to crimes they didn’t do. Kanye West wants to make it clear of the evils done to African Americans, “getting chocked by detectives, yeah, yeah, now check the method. They be askin’ us questions, harass and arrest us.”
Throughout Kanye West’s prolific career, he has possessed an intricate sound that has separated him from his hip-hop counterparts. After the immense praise he received on his breakout album, College Dropout, it was no surprise that Kanye West would perform at the same level on his second album, Late Registration. West presented an innovative and soulful sound to the hip-hop industry, earning individuals’ ears and hearts. With lyrics that discussed themes of poverty, drug abuse, and domestic issues and samples that provided a sense of nostalgia, Kanye West was steadily transforming into a political icon far beyond the means of his hip-hop artistry. With such empowering and sincere lyrics, Kanye West served as the voice of historically marginalized people, whose voices were seemingly unheard before. In the song “Drive Slow,” West’s guidance and empowering message remained evident, as he joined forces with GLC and Paul Wall to create a soulful song that offered assistance on how to overcome barriers in life. Through the use of suggestive details, figurative language, and vivid storytelling, West utilizes the automobile culture to assert how individuals can achieve success of every field of human endeavor through constant efforts in the right direction. In addition, he also attempts to convey that one must “drive slow” in a car in order to appreciate the environment that consists outside of the automobile. West creates a double entendre of the word “drive slow,” expressing that
Throughout Kanye West’s prolific career, he has always possesses a intricate sound that has separated him from his hip-hop counterparts during the early twenty first century. With such empowering and sincere lyrics, Kanye West served as the voice of historically marginalized people who often were stripped from their voices. In the song Drive Slow, West’s guidance and empowering message remained evident, as he joined forces with GLC and Paul Wall to create a soulful and mellow that helped to get people through with their day. Through the use of suggestive details, figurative language, vivid storytelling, and repetition, West utilizes automobile culture to metaphorically assert how individuals can achieve success of every field of human endeavor through constant efforts in right direction. In addition, he also attempts to convey that one must “drive slow” in a car in order to appreciate the environment that consists outside of the automobile. West creates a double entendre of the word
Kanye West has proven himself over time that he is much more than just a producer. With each new album he releases, he constantly pushes the boundaries of music influencing artist across all genres. Kanye has an ever evolving sound that changes almost year to year. Kanye West’s Yeezus album is an album that takes a much darker and more minimalist turn in his discography. This approach to music makes Yeezus a much harder album to listen through because it is not filled with nice, polished sounds. Having the album made this way makes us look over what the message of a song and the album are. Among many rough songs one the most popular on the album was Blood on the Leaves. Blood on the Leaves samples from another song called Strange Fruit sung by Nina Simone which is a very political song talking about gruesome lynchings that happened before and at the turn of the century. With help from the sample, West uses the pain of lynching and drug abuse to compare with the break ups he goes through.
Millions of people in the world listen to music for all different reasons. Most people all over the world listen to different genres of music in order to relax, but not too many people pay attention to the actual lyrics of a song. If you listen to the lyrics of a song you will realize that many songs have important messages or themes to them. An example of this is the lyrics of the song “Changes” by Tupac Shakur. If you listen to this song, you will realize that Tupac raps about not only the problems that African Americans face from society, but also the struggles that poor people in society have to endure and overcome. Many
All, of the dancers in this music video are African-American, and it is very clear. None of their hair is straightened, they are all in Black Panther-esque outfits, and they are “unapologetically black.” The concept of this video is head-on addressing systemic racism. An obvious example is the dancers but there are also many more. For one, the opening scene, as referenced earlier, includes Beyoncé herself standing on a police car flooded in water while a clip saying “What happened in the New Orleans?” plays in the background. This artist is using her platform to bring attention to the hurricane in New Orleans and how there was little to nothing done by police there. She is calling out the system in this video.
In my opinion, Kendrick Lamar, an award-winning rapper and songwriter, has one of the best abilities to describe his distressed and abused lifestyle in Compton, California. He is not your original cliché artist who does not speak about anything meaningful. Kendrick, also known as K. Dot, is one of the most well known and most respected rappers in this era. Not only does he speak about his gloomy past, but he also speaks about his fortunate future. His ability to give detailed representations of his struggles and his story telling allows me to, metaphorically, enter the mind of Kendrick Lamar.
Reportedly The first verse of the song is told through the eyes of a drug dealer contemplating his relationship with god. Kanye took about 6 month to complete the second verse he wanted to draw out his inspiration perfectly. Kanye uses the song to also express how the media seems to shy away from songs that address faith. While they embrace songs that talk about sex, violence and drugs. “ so here go my single, dog, radio needs this they say you can rap about anything except for jesus that means guns , sex, lies, video tapes but if i talked about god my record wont get played huh?”. The lyrics are talking about an experience Kanye went through while trying to get signed onto a record label many producers turned him down when he played a demo of jesus
Leading up to the release of the album, Kanye premiered the song “New Slaves” on buildings across the globe. New Slaves set the tone for the album’s assumed political thematic approach, a seemingly popular decision. He outright calls out corporations stating “Fuck you and your corporations y’all can’t control me”, a line he admits may have caused the lack of promotion for “Black Skinhead”, another quasi-politically driven song that was composed to be a radio smash hit. Both of these songs on their own are fantastic. They’re not only well inspired politically driven hip hop songs, they’re arena anthems with ‘Black Skinhead” bordering on punk rock. “Middle america packed
Today many people feel compelled to buy anything or everything with an expensive price tag. This includes Expensive designer clothes, latest gadgets, expensive vehicles and many other similar things. This form of consumerism has embedded itself in today’s society; where it's encouraged to invest in such materialistic possessions. Kanye West is an African-American rapper, producer, and entrepreneur, who articulates his struggle with consumerism and the struggle for those around him in his song “All Falls Down.” West, utilizes puns, rhyme, and juxtaposition to highlight the issues surrounding materialism that can be interpreted differently by different listeners such as African Americans and White Americans.
“Power” is a song that was released in Kanye West’s 2010 album called “My Beautiful Dark Twister Fantasy.” This particular song is one of my favorite songs of all times because it gives me a combination of eustress and distress as well. The song is extremely upbeat, which often leads me to dance and smile while singing the lyrics. In addition, the first verse of this song empowers me because it states that the singer is living in the 21st century trying to live his life and impact society bigger than anyone. The hook of this song also plays a major role in why it’s song inspiring to me because it speaks about having power and one must take advantage of the time to reach success. The beat, the first verse, and the hook
Side Note: This song written by Jay Z was released a couple months ago, so there is no album out yet. I read in an article that the album would be release next summer. So I just chose a picture from his other albums.
West’s song, “New Slaves,” explaining the problems in today society and how people today not woke up the history and just woke up to the nice flashy clothes, cars, and jewelry. The song “New Slaves” discuss the tragedy of today society from people treating each other wrong just on how that person looks, or on their religion. “What you want, a Bentley? Fur coat? A diamond chain? All you blacks want all the same things” (Lines 9-10) West is trying to say all the new generation want is diamonds, fancy cars, and fancy clothes but not focusing on the problems of today society. West also trying to state that people need to wake up and pay attention before someone is a victim of the tragedies in the world. Dunn States, “Ye’s themes of segregation and racism are well-discussed and evidently clear in the first half of the first verse.” Throughout the song “New Slaves” West is explaining how people are start to spread away from each other when each other depends another. "So long, so long, so long, you cannot survive, and I'm not dyin', and I can't lose” (Lines 67-68) West is also trying to say is that if people stand for what they believe in and be a leader and not a follower they will survive this crazy world. If people, follow others than be a leader people will not survive and they will lose the American
When talking about famed musical artist and entrepreneur, Kanye West, exasperated sighs an eye rolls are par for the course. He’s managed to create a polarizing persona with his famed outbursts and media-acclaimed family. That said, few could dispute the level of success he’s achieved. Having successfully carved a place for himself in both music and fashion, there must be a method for his madness. As a matter of fact, it might be surprising to find that Kanye has certain business-savvy qualities. Here are four of Kanye’s traits that companies can adopt to create a winning workplace.
Kendrick lamar’s award winning music video for his 2017 single Element shows the many experiences he faced growing up as a black man. The various symbols broadcasted throughout this music video show specific conflicts and struggle that he has dealt with throughout his life and also allowed black man that have been in his position something to relate to. He teamed up with director/photographer Jonas Lindstroem to help him convey his message but in a unique and creative way. The slow moving scenes show a softer depiction of his encounters. They give a sense of understanding which allows the viewer to be able to comprehend and absorb his message. As a whole, it was a collection of the pain, beauty, peace and violence that exists within his “element”.
Kanye West produced the popular song “All Falls Down” in 2004. He is well known for creating many wonderful tunes but this one stands out above the rest. While his other songs contain bass-heavy instrumentals and contain lyrics about money and women, this one is strays away from the previous structures. “All Falls Down” catches the attention of youth, with its mellow melody, to send a strong message concerning the overemphasis on money and education and how it can be harmful through the lyrics. The issues contained in the message are highly focused on the idea that money and education will not always be there
