In the book, Inside out and Back again, by Thanhha Lai, a girl named Ha and her family are forced to leave Vietnam and subsequently experience hardships and face many obstacles as refugees in their new life. Throughout the story Ha demonstrates how her stubbornness and curiosity transforms her dynamic character. Has’ character evolves into a very curious person. Back in Vietnam, Ha wasn’t very curious because she was familiar with all the sights, sounds, and tastes of her homeland. However in America, she became very ponderful. The book states, “Today our cowboy brings a paper bucket of chicken, skin crispy and golden, smelling of perfection…the skin tastes as promised, crunchy and salty, hot and spicy.” (Lai 120) Given that Ha isn’t …show more content…

In the story she describes how she had received dried papaya for Christmas and how much she despised it. To most, we’d think that Ha appears to be headstrong and difficult in this situation. The book points out, “Three pouches of dried papaya, chewy, sugary, waxy and sticky. So mad I throw all in the trash.” (Lai 232) A quote from Inside out and Back Again that caught the attention of quite a few students was the practical big toe scheme. In the beginning of the book Ha says it is outrageous to think that having boys as members of the family are a source of good luck. “But last night I pouted when mother insisted one of my brothers must rise first this morning to bless our house because only make feet can bring luck… I decided to wake before dawn and tap my big toe.” Lastly, towards the end of the story, Ha informs the reader how her mother would have loved to determine the careers for her children. However, not all of them were a success so mother tries to influence Ha by telling her that she is only good at arguing. Now this indeed was a true fact. “Mother has always wanted an engineer, a real doctor, a poet or a lawyer. She turns to me, you love to argue, right? No I don’t. She brightens.” (Lai
