Hekja is a young teenage girl living in the viking era, when during one of her usually peaceful days was disrupted by Viking ships coming in to plunder her village. In this scene, she is being pursued by a Viking as she desperately attempts to escape his wrath. The almost excessive use of commas that Jackie French uses is what first drew me to this paragraph. The commas seemed to hinder the flow of the sentences, making it seem abrupt and harsh. Because she did this, it made the scene all the more nerve wracking. The way that this scene was written really stood out to me. Even though the story itself is written in third person (referring to characters by "he, she, they, and their names") the whole scene of her desperate escape has been described
The author was very heavy in the Pathos category. He invested strongly in using stories and vivid language to get their point across to the readers. For example, in paragraph 4 the author talked about living north of New York City. Talking about how most of the vehicles people would see on the road would be an SUV or a light truck. They went on saying
As much as punctuation books go, Lynne Truss creates an enjoyable atmosphere from the very start of Eats, Shoots and Leaves. In particular, Truss
In the novel, “ Like Water For Chocolate” by Laura Esquivel, Esquivel demonstrates how she’s sufficient in her tone of writing and portraying the reader's attention by grasping their emotions. She uses nostalgic, imagery, and Syntax. Nostalgic is a tone in the passage when she misses Nacha causing a rush of emotions. Tita becomes carried away with what she missed having with Nacha presuming she would never have lost her this soon. The author applies syntax by using continuous commas on “Nacha! The smell: her noodle soup, her chiliaques, her champurrado, her molcajete sauce, her bread with cream, all were far away in a distant past” (Esquivel 167). The use of continuous commas contending that the coordinating conjunction is adequate separation, some writers leave out the comma in a sentence with short, balanced independent clauses.
One thing that helps the reader empathize with the narrator is the narrator observing Sheila Mant. As the narrator observes
In the novel saving francesca by Melina Marchetta it shows a range of techniques authors use to engage the audience like conflict, events, setting.
The author’s use of characters allowed the reader
Since this book was wrote in first person I could really see what was going on inside of Hanneke's head, along with how she was feeling during this whole ongoing problem.
Most importantly, it is a story of captivity, of failed attempts at freedom, and of one woman's partial escape from the constraints of her family, home, and past.
A narrator, who is without a name, tells of his first hand experiences throughout the story. This is in contrast to ‘Miss Brill’ in which narrative is delivered in the third person, with the use of free indirect speech to depict the story and portray the characters. By Wells selecting a first person narrative he draws the reader closer into the character’s mind set. This gives Wells the ability to convey the primary characters full spectrum of emotional thought, from open mindedness to the conflict and fear within him. First narrative provides the reader insight to thoughts and observations therefore adding suspense of the unknowing into the gothic style.
Not only do the roles of the characters compel a reader, they also illustrate the
When first introduced to the narrator, readers quickly pick up on how observant she is to the world around her. However as the novel draws to a close, many quick events take place with little to no explanation or commentary from the
One artistic aspect of the book is that Stockett chose to tell the story from three different women’s perspectives. Using this stylistic technique helps keep the reader more engaged in the book. Each woman, whether it be Aibileen, Minny, or Skeeter, uses a
While this text is set from a third person viewpoint, it also uses an interesting narrative technique, which is known as 'free indirect discourse' or 'free indirect style'. This is when a third person story uses certain features of first person speech. This style is different in the fact that introductory expressions such as, ‘she thought’, and ‘they said’, are not used. Using this technique allows a third person text to utilise a first person perspective, portraying the characters thoughts and words more directly.
The story is written as a second person narrative. This style puts the reader in the position of the main character. We are never told the main character’s name, making it easier for the reader to relate to the character. Writing in the second person also challenges the reader, putting them in the position of the main character.
One of these qualifications is that the story’s plot is more important than its characters. In “The Pit And The Pendulum,” the reader knows very
