Gloria Naylor’s Mama Day, through prefatory documents at the beginning of the novel, is able to further her rewrite of the African experience post-slavery. Naylor published Mama Day in 1988. During that year the term African American had been coined by Jesse Jackson. By using this term today we are able to honor our current place as American while also giving recognition and preserving our African Heritage Through the use of three prefatory documents Naylor is able to rewrite the historical African experience post-slavery.First through the use of the Day family tree to allude to the bible and the depiction of Sapphira Wade as a God-like person. On the family tree, all of the boys have names stemming from the bible such as Jonah and Mark. John - Paul is the name of the last boy we see on the family tree similar to how in the Bible John is to believe to have written the book of revelations which is the last book in the bible. Another parallel shown in the story is when John Paul is talking about his mother he states “God rested on the seventh day, their mama declared, and she would too”(151). This quote compares God's creation of everything in the six days and his rest on the seventh to Sapphira’s creation of six children and stopping after have the seventh one. By doing so Naylor is able to communicate the power of the black woman by alluding to her god-like power.

The bill of sale for Sapphira Wade is used to contrast from the typical history of slaves by going into depth about the characteristic of the slave. When a slave was purchased a bill of sale was created to provide proof of ownership. Most bills of sale for slaves gave a simple name, age and appearance but lack personality traits. For example, at the Smithsonian Museum, a bill of sale dated 1835 details the sale of a young girl. The bill of sale for this slave reads “One negro girl, named Polly aged about sixteen years, yellow complexion and black eyes”.
