Mini Essay 1 Gilgamesh: A New Rendering In English Verse, byDavid Ferry, is a story that manages to be both transcends and very much be fixated in time with its themes. Some theme ideas I find familiar and relatable in the work are those of friendship and loss, and then comes along the idea of how a king should rule that is extremely foreign and baffles me. Breaking down the themes and ideas allows us as historians to better learn of about own selves and the people of our past. Friendship can easily be seen in the character of Enkidu and his friend Gilgamesh. A true friend in my opinion is not one whom you simply spend time with; but rather, a friend is someone who will come to the aid and support of their friend without the need for a call to action. Even if, the action puts the friend coming to aid in a jeopardizing position a friend will come to the aid of their companion. The character of Enkidu seems to fit this position. In the following passage Enkidu demonstrating how a friend can aid another, “‘The dream you dreamed tonight is fortunate. The mountain that you dreamed about is Huwawa. Huwawa will fall like a mountain.’”(Ferry, 23). Enkidu offers Gilgamesh here a piece of emotional support in the form of reassurance, and this pattern continues two more nights with Enkidu explaining that Gilgamesh’s dreams are not a part of some sort of curse but rather vision of a triumphed future. Throughout history, there have been stories of great warriors of one distinction or another. This semester has been full of them. Some have been gods, demigods, or great men protected by gods. Most have, in one fashion or another, been greater than common men. Stories were created to explain how these men came to be and how most have risen to the heights of kings in many cases. The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Song of Roland are two of these stories that tell tale of great epic heroes. They were both larger than life though both were flawed in different and similar fashions. They share the similarities of a complementary companion. Those companions differed greatly in their own character and judgement.
The Epic of Gilgamesh is a very popular epic that is difficult to understand at first, which is why there is different translations of the same book. Although Foster and Sander’s translations have a lot of similar words and the stories are basically the same, there are also a lot of differences between the two. One of which is more straightforward and easier to understand, whereas the other is more of an in depth thoughtful read for the reader. Both translations differences have their own particular reasons for doing so, and add to the depiction of the story. I feel like the translation in the Anthology is a more complex read, whereas Sander’s translation is much easier to understand.
What is the meaning of friendship? The meaning of a true friendship is being considered as part of the family even though the same blood does not run through your veins. Gilgamesh, a very old story, translated by Stephen Mitchell tells a story of a powerful king and a hero who becomes civilized in society. The story begins by describing the city of Uruk and then introducing Gilgamesh as the king who ruled in about 2750 BCE. However, he is described as an abusive king because he oppresses the young men by crushing them and also oppresses the young women by raping them on their wedding nights. On the other hand, Enkidu becomes present in the story as the hero who’s going to stop Gilgamesh from being such a harsh king. In his introduction, Stephen Mitchell accounts for the creation of Enkidu by saying, “Enkidu the brave, as powerful and fierce as the war god Ninurta. Hair covered his body, hair grew thick on his head and hung down to his waist, like a woman’s hair” (74-75). The mother creation, Aruru, created Enkidu as the double side of Gilgamesh, but she was told to create a hero so that Gilgamesh and Enkidu can balance each other that way there could be peace in Uruk. However, when Enkidu becomes civilized, he has a hard time trying to realize the changes in his life since he comes from nature where he would only communicate with animals. Gilgamesh, written by David Ferry, illustrates a story about a man who knows everything, but continues to try and learn more. Although Gilgamesh may be arrogant, he still remains a great ruler and commander of Uruk. Throughout the book, the adventures of Gilgamesh fit Joseph Campbell’s idea of the hero’s journey. After analyzing the pieces to the hero’s journey, Gilgamesh is proven to be a true hero because his journey parallels that of the hero’s journey described by Campbell. The latter part of this paper will prove Gilgamesh is a hero using Campbell’s model, by analyzing the pieces of the hero’s journey: separation or departure, the initiation, and the return.
The story of “Gilgamesh” depicts all of the heroic triumphs and heart-breaking pitfalls a heroic narrative should depict to be able to relate to today’s audience. However, “Gilgamesh” was once considered a lost and forgotten piece of literature for thousands of years, so there is a tremendous gap between the time it was created and the time it was translated into language that today’s audience can understand. The Epic of Gilgamesh has its place as one of the first examples of epic poetry in recorded history. The epic describes the adventures of the demigod-king Gilgamesh who, after the death of his close friend Enkidu, seeks immortality but is ultimately unsuccessful. Perhaps one of the main reasons the Epic of Gilgamesh is so popular and has lasted such a long time, is because it offers insight into the human concerns of people four thousand years ago, many of which are still relevant today. Some of these human concerns found in the book that are still applicable today include: the fear and concerns people have in relation to death, overwhelming desires to be immortal, and the impact a friendship has on a person’s life. It does not take a great deal of insight into The Epic of Gilgamesh for a person to locate these themes in the story, and even less introspection to relate to them.

The maturation of Gilgamesh and his desire to acquire wisdom throughout his journey is quite apparent. By overcoming difficulties such as upholding Uruk, becoming friends with Enkidu, and various other scenarios, Gilgamesh proves that he did in fact grow up throughout the epic.
The Epic of Gilgamesh, a Mesopotamian epic poem with no known author, is the story of the brute King of Uruk, Gilgamesh, who was two-thirds divine and one-third human, which teaches readers the unstoppable force of death, the wrath of the gods, and also the power of friendship, which are illustrated to readers through the characters journeys, and those encountered along the way. The poem, which is divided into twelve tablets, starts off with Gilgamesh being a vicious tyrant, one who “would leave no son to his father… no girl to her mother”(Gilgamesh 101), and as for newly married couples “was to join with the girl that night”(Gilgamesh 109) transitions to by the end of the story an entirely new man.
In The Epic of Gilgamesh the lines that are repeated at the beginning and end of the epic show that only immortality a human can gain lies in creating things that last beyond a person’s lifetime. While at the beginning of the epic Gilgamesh is seeking eternal life, when he concludes his journey he realizes that he has created an enduring legend through the foundation of his city, Uruk. Through this legend, Gilgamesh can live on in the memory of his people, long after he has passed away. The epic is able to convey this message multiple ways. The opening lines immediately introduce and impress upon the audience the importance of Gilgamesh, and the significance of his kingship. The epic continues on to describe the city of Uruk, with special consideration given to the walls surrounding Uruk. 3.
