In the story Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting, there is a theme that is relatable at all times of the day to all different kinds of people, which is that life is hard. Some reasons life is hard in the story Fly Away Home is that Andrew's mother died, he lives in an airport, and his dad and him have very little money. Being in these situations would definitely make life harder for anyone.
What would life be like without a mother? For Andrew life was hard because he had to learn how to live his life without a character as important as a mother. Life is hard for not only Andrew because all of the people without a mother character will never have anyone to replace their real mothers who show love, kindness and careness. It would let alone be hard
The short story that I read, Blackberries in June by Ron Rash, opened my eyes to let me see that life can be unfair and cruel and that life is full of disappointments. An example of this idea would be when Charlton had to quit high school and work full time for his father because his father was in an accident which resulted in a shattered hand (Rash 207). Another example of this idea that life can be unfair is by looking into Linda’s past, she was not thirty years old and had to take care of her children. Her husband, Charlton, pays her in-law by a percentage of profit instead of an hourly wage which could have been used to help her through the tough financial situation that she and the rest of her family are in (Rash 210). The idea that life
“Flying,” by Alice Miller is a complex story about a woman named Allie, who reminisces about a time spent when her cousin Mack taught her to fly when she was just a young girl. On different occasions when Mack visited, he would show her how to do new things. As Allie grew up she found herself thinking of the secret that Mack shared with her and how he told her not to tell anyone or she may get hurt. Allie longed for the feeling of flying, if she could just reach out and talk to Mack but too much time had passed. She dreams of flying in her sleep, not for long periods of time, but just enough to embrace that feeling she had years ago. She wonders if many people have experienced flying the way that she has and if she could fly by herself without Mack. One day, Allie tries to fly on her own and succeeds, soaring higher than she did with Mack. Before Allie knew it, she was flying through the clouds and around town. Now that Allie has experienced the feeling of flying again, more than ever she wanted to share with her kids. One night after the children were asleep she wanted to share her secret with her boys but instead chose her daughter. Miller suggests that when a person is afraid of doing something on their own, sometimes it just takes a little bit of courage to step out and let go of the things that could be holding a person back.
Having parents that tried so hard to set themselves apart from society, all while struggling to earn money, had an impact on their children's lives, and it wasn't for the better. These children lived to struggle. With a bad home life, and parents that didn't seem to care for them enough, Jeannette, Brian, Maureen, and Lori Walls all eventually moved away from their careless parents, to New York. Although it took time for Lori and Jeannette Walls to save up what little money they had, due to the fact that the father continually stole it, they were able to move to New York successfully. Later in the memoir, their parents also decide to move there, except they don't try to better their lives like their
“Flying,” by Alice Miller tells the story of woman reminiscing on the time that her cousin taught her how to fly when they were kids. It begins with the main character, Allie, flying in the air with her cousin, Mack, when she was six years old. Allie has many questions and Mack tells her that all boys can fly and instructs her to not tell anyone that she knows this secret. He also tells her not to ever try to fly without him and compares this secret to the myth about Prometheus giving the God’s fire to man and being punished for it. As the years went by, Allie wonders if she would ever fly again and even doubts if the memory was real. She becomes a wife and a mother to two sons and a daughter but still wonders if flying is possible. One night, she decides to test her memory and tries to fly out of her backyard. She slowly ascends just as she did when she was young but even higher. Over the next few days, her urge to fly again grows. One night, she sneaks into her children’s room and picks up her daughter to take her outside and show her how to fly. The story ends with Allie telling her daughter to promise not to tell the boys what she is about to experience and excitement building in Allie for her daughter. The central idea of this story is the pursuit of satisfaction never ends.
When a person is faced with an awful situation, it is all too easy to only see the negative. Flight by Sherman Alexie, focuses on this through the point of a young teen named Zits. Zits grew up in an abusive and unhealthy environment. (exsmples) When Zits turned fifteen, he met someone that calls themselves Justice who mislead Zits ino shooting up a bank. This leads to his death and a series of body shifts. These shifts make Zits reflect on his own identity and the actions he’s committed his life. By experiencing different stories/lives, Zits is able to learn that, even though there are bad things in the world, there are also many positives to go with the negatives.
Everyone has struggles. Many teenagers struggle with self-esteem, stress, bullying, body image, drinking, and smoking. Many adults struggle with marriage, jobs, money, drinking, smoking, health problems, and stress. There is not one person that has an easy life with no struggles because it is impossible. Having struggles teaches us life lessons.
Regardless of who you are, where you come from or what you do, everyone faces difficulties in their lives. This statement could easily define the very meaning of SE Hinton’s novel The Outsiders, which can be summed up in the phrase ‘things are rough all over.’ This is a metaphor used very early on in the book by Cherry Valance when she and Ponyboy Curtis discuss the differences between their two social groups (pg 43). It means that everyone falls upon difficult times no matter what. I will be exploring how things are hard for three characters in The Outsiders, Johnny, Randy and Darry.
There are lots of things in life that happen to different people, for different reasons. And some people, you would never think they endured some of the things that they had to endure. Some people’s lives are better than others, the experiences, the drives that they push through each day, every day. But this story, is eye opening, and a learning experience in multiple ways.
How not having a father figure affected their emotional and phycological well-being. Also, it taught the readers that sometimes having a father does not necessarily, mean they are a father figure, for example Mr. Clutter, he was there for his family and children, but he chose other things to be proud of instead of his children, he felt that his achievements were more important than his children’s
As a child I grew up in a community of neighbors that had just as much as I did, hardships and challenges where unknown to me. It was in college in my Chicano/a studies courses that allowed me to view my life challenges. When asked to describe how I overcame life hardships, I can only think of the life lessons my father have instilled in me. Therefore, my socio – economic challenges are overcome daily by learning how to manage money, at an early age I was thought to save my money. Education challenges where coping with a learning disability without resources, my private tutor was my oldest sister. A family challenge was coping with the passing of my mother in
Life isn't worth living if you are not willing to accept the challenges thrown your way. How I grew up wasn't easy. It, instead, was rousing from being adopted out of China, learning a new culture, to facing some hindrance. Nevertheless, I couldn't have done this on my own. With the help of God all things are possible.
The story ¨Fly Away Home¨" By Eve Bunting is an example of one of the world's biggest issues, which is poverty. Fly away home teaches the younger generation to be thankful for what you have. Fly Away Home theme is about being thankful for you, what have because Andrew doesn't have a place to call home, does labor instead of education, and hopes for a better future even with all of his anger and his misery.
Life is something that requires a considerable amount of physical and mental effort. Some are fortunate enough to have everything prepared for them. Such as some are born into money; some come across good fortune yet most work hard from the start to get some where in the world. It just all depends on how you were brought into this world. For some people, life is full of stress and hardships. That’s how life was for someone very dear to me. He had it difficult from the start. However he chose not to let life get him down. When life gave him lemons, he made lemonade.
The concept of motivation is what directs an individual through particular courses of actions and is what humanity is based off of. While the requirement and need for a motivation in life is significant towards having goals, succeeding in life and learning as a person, through that management differentiates individual's courses of actions from other individuals. Doris May Lessing an author for several diverse short stories, including a short story called “Flight” that demonstrates an excellent depiction of how the bond and connection between an old man and his favourite granddaughter, Alice is significant towards the perception that “letting go isn't easy for others either”. “Flight” is a short story that illustrates how strong symbolism can be to build a protagonist's character through the development of the story with the inclusion of the actions and gestures described by the way the characters within the story use self perception. Furthermore, prominent symbols include nature, birds, gates, bird cages, a beautifully described garden using distinct word choices and imagery. Motivation impacts an individual ambitions, decisions, future, personal beliefs and behaviour through the means of having a desire to fulfill a goal. Doris May Lessing used just a couple pages to develop a well written story while still incorporating the establishment of the old man that is represented through external with the addition of internal motivations by directing the protagonist towards a specific course of actions that is both educational and insightful.
As a child, I remember growing up in an area of Atlanta, Georgia called Mechanicsville. This area was very diverse with people from various socioeconomic backgrounds. Often, my mother would share valuable life lessons with my siblings and me. One, in particular, I remember even to this day is, “Life is only as challenging or motivating as you make it”. Originally, I did not quite understand the purpose of this aphorism; but as I got older, the meaning became quite clear. Although life for me has been both wholesome and unhealthy, in hindsight, it seemed better than my childhood friends. If you knew the real story, you would see that my life is not as perfect as it appears. Just to provide you with a little insight into my world, I had a
