I feel Peggy McIntosh offers compelling points in her article, “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”. White people in our society tend to take for granted and not even realize how easily they can live their lives without the discrimination that others endure. They don’t live in fear of being a victim of racism because they are not used to that kind of treatment themselves. Being white is viewed as the norm in our society, while it is also normal to treat anyone who is non-white differently. People in our American society are quick to stereotype any race that is not white. Anybody who is non-white must continuously have their guards up for racism and are often labeled social unacceptable when they do not deserve to be.

Jose Antonio Vargas states, “Until we unpack ‘whiteness’ as a social construct…we cannot have a real, more honest conversation about race and racism…In this era of #BlackLivesMatter, at a time when Latinos are the largest minority group and Asians are the fastest growing racial and immigrant group, exploring and questioning ‘white privilege’ is essential” (qtd. in Craven). Having a discussion about what “whiteness” means today and how it came about is so important because in the past, other races have had their worth based off of what “whiteness” was worth. Abstract liberalism category discusses racial issues in a classic liberal sense involving concepts such as equality, meanwhile, opposing the steps in addressing racial inequality. Naturalization believes in the racial inequality as a natural occurring phenomenon. Cultural racism is the racial inequality to cultural differences between races, and the last subcategory is Minimization of racism involves suggesting that racism no longer has an impact on the lives of racial minorities. This is why white workers follow black customers through stores, and why white women clutch their purses when a black man walks by, why the eyes of white children widen in fear when they come across a complexion darker than their own. This fear is taught, ironically, by what is not taught. In “The roots of racism,” according to Lance Selfa, the origin of racism began with the growth of slavery. The latter was initially used for profit means only, free from racist ideas, as it was a cheaper alternative for labor; however, it eventually became an ethical and racial issue. Mass media, that once was a vehicle to spread culture and competent journalism, began to be used to reinforce racist stereotypes and black subordination in relation to white people. New black characters began to rise, inside and outside of the screen, portrayed in degrading roles linked with their dark skin color. From slavery to racial segregation people of color have faced many disadvantages and setbacks in the struggle for equality. When as a country we spent hundreds of years believing that the white race was superior, it’s not easy to let go of all the racist intolerances that have been imbedded into our culture. The remnants of our racists society have created systematic racism which is not as obvious as what racism once was and it often overlooked; especially by newer generations.

White people have an invisible package of unearned assets. Invisible in the way that they can't be seen or touched, but can be cashed in everyday at colored peoples expense. White people have these unearned advantages and privileges just for being white, and in our society this leads to a systematic tendency to over empowerment, where denial of these advantages occurs leading to no changes in society.

Why was it that the white race feels superior to other races, such as Hispanics, Asians, and African Americans? The problem with people is that many don’t like to see other ethical culture succeed. What people don’t know is that if that ethical group does not succeed then they together can not succeed as a racial community. Let’s start with the definition of racism. Racism refers to the belief that race is the primary determinant of human capacities, that a certain race is inherently superior or inferior to others, and/or that individuals should be treated differently based on their ascribed race.

In the winter there isn’t much color. The trees are bare, the sky is gray and everything is covered in white snow. Personally, I feel that winter is gloomier than summertime. I feel this way because of the colors surrounding us. The dullness of colors during the winter time seem to make things more bland and less cheerful. The bright colors from spring and summer seem to make most people happier and cheerful. Although, each color could have both a positive and a negative feel to it, it just ranges by the person who views it. People associate different emotions with different colors. Three categories I will be explaining are cool, warm and neutral colors.
