To some people, poetry may seem to not be applicable and not entertaining. Poetry is a way to express one’s feelings and ideas and to inspire its readers. To understand poetry, and to get a sense of what the poet is trying to convey, one must analyze the poem to see why and how it is compelling to the reader. In her poem “Eagle Poem” Joy Harjo appealingly writes about the spiritual connection to the circle of life and prayer. The poem “The Street” by Octavio Paz is about life and the choices one makes. In this poem, there is a deeper meaning presented through the theme of isolation, identity, and the choices one makes in life. The last poem I will be analyzing is “Remember” by Joy Harjo which accentuates the importance of nature and where …show more content…
This extended metaphor allows the reader to see the result of the prayer later in life. She also tells her readers “that we must take the utmost care and kindness in all things” (lines 15-16). She is reminding us that we are supposed to behave with care and kindness. This poem is compelling because it makes the reader allow his or her mind to be willing to accept new suggestions and ideas. The way the eagle makes a “circle in the blue sky” is a symbol of how life, like a circle, is continuous, without an end or a beginning (line 11). In the end of the poem, she writes “in beauty” which is a connotation to something each person hopes for in their own life. We can see the poem shows how peace can be received through prayer and nature.
In his poem “The Street,” Octavio Paz uses an extended metaphor to show a man who is on a journey of life and does not necessarily know his right path. He takes on obstacles as they come and even repeats them again. This introduces part of the theme that life is about making choices and going through the obstacles, even if in the end he does not find what he was seeking. The poem is set up as a free verse with no meter or rhyme scheme with the theme being identity. Just from the title of the poem, we can see how the “long silent street” represents the author’s period of hardship in his life journey
Throughout history poetry has been written since earlier 2000 B.C. and it was not until the late sixteen centuries, that poetry for Chicanos, (Mexican-American), were getting written. During and after the Mexican-American War of 1848, is when the Mexican-American poetry became popular. However, the real popularity and the creative literature activity among Chicano authors was in the 1960 through the 70’s; l this era being called the Renaissance Era. Chicano's often shape their poetry and solidify their cultural and the struggles of their minority culture. In this paper I am going to compare and contrast two Mexican-American poets. Telling the reader about the different types of poetry each one used, along with ways that they expressed themselves.
The poems “Introduction to Poetry”, “Poem”, “Poetry Should Ride the Bus”, “How Poetry comes to me”, “How I Discovered Poetry”, and “Making It in Poetry”. These poems express their author’s thoughts on poetry beautifully. Each author gives their own interpretation of what poetry is to them. However, each poem carries small differences and similarities. At the end, each poem has taught its readers a new meaning of poetry.
In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by
In the profile article “Jimmy Santiago Baca: Poetry as Lifesaver” author Rob Baker, who also is a creative writing and English teacher proves to not only the readers but also the National Council of Teachers of English the significance of poetry. The authors main point is that poetry saved Jimmy Santiago Baca’s life, he shows us how by explaining the emotions when Baca began to read poetry; he then went on to write poetry and even publish his own works while still in prison, after Baca’s release, he became a dedicated teacher who also works with gang members and teaches workshops.
Poetry can follow your life all the way through, from the innocence of a child, to the end of your days. The comfort, seduction, education, occasion and hope found in poems are elaborated in Poetry Should Ride the Bus by Ruth Forman. As the poem reads on, you not only travel through the life of a person from adolescence to being elderly through vivid imagery, but also hit on specific genres of poems through the personification of poetry as the characters in the stages of life. This poem’s genres hit on what poetry should do and be, by connecting the life many of us live.
Approximately two months ago, I began looking for a poem, which was a serious work since I pursued a powerful verse that was appropriate to my present state. Moreover, the poem’s selection procedure involved studying historical and cultural aspects, for the reason that I was grown under a different circumstance and shared another background. I acknowledge the challenge of reading poetry in a foreign language due to an effort to realize the main message of the poem immediately and recognize the literary devices directly. Conversely, reading poetry in a native language seems natural and habituated inasmuch the sounds, music, vocabulary, phraseology, images and events are accustomed and familiar. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the fruits of my labor because the poem was chosen and the more I read it, the more I became aware, inquisitive and fascinated by it.
The poem begins with the poet noticing the beauty around her, the fall colors as the sun sets “Their leaves and fruits seemed painted, but was true, / Of green, of red, of yellow, mixed hue;” (5-6). The poet immediately relates the effects of nature’s beauty to her own spiritual beliefs. She wonders that if nature here on Earth is so magnificent, then Heaven must be more wonderful than ever imagined. She then views a stately oak tree and
It starts off saying that once in a while on a nice day, go outside and enjoy the day. Breathe in the fresh air and feel the breeze in your hair. (Lines 3-4) The reader should take the time to feel the grass between their toes, smell the flowers, and watch the clouds. (Lines 6-7) Listen to the bees buzz, and to climb the trees. (Lines 9-10) Look out into the meadow and watch the deer play. (Lines 11-12) People should pick the flowers, watch the streams glisten and listen to the sound of the water splashing. (Lines 13-16) When you feel at peace inhale and lay on the ground. Let nature tranquilize you. (Lines
Although this is a short poem, there are so many different meanings that can come from the piece. With different literary poetic devices such as similes, imagery, and symbolism different people take away different things from the poem. One of my classmates saw it as an extended metaphor after searching for a deeper connection with the author. After some research on the author, we came to learn that the
Poets use many ways when they want to communicate something using poems. Poems are used as a means of passing ideas, information and expression of feelings. This has made the poets to use the natural things and images that people can relate with so that they can make these poems understandable. The most common forms of writing that are used by the poets are the figurative language for example imagery and metaphors. In addition, the poets use the natural landscape in their attempt to explore the philosophical questions. Therefore, this essay will explore the forms that have been used by the poets in writing poems using the natural landscape. The essay will be based on poems such as ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’ by
Famed street artist, Banksy, once said “Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable”, demonstrating that people who stand out help and inspire more than those who conform and do their own thing. Art is not limited to the fine arts, but literature, music, self-expression, and even discoveries of science, math, and technology. Those who dare to create and express their emotions live the fullest lives, aiding those in need of inspiration, are the best people, similar to the ideas expressed in “A Psalm of Life” by William Longfellow. The poem also adds the importance of art’s relationship with short lives to push it’s romantic ideas. The poem deals with the ideas of separating oneself from the tightly bound rules and expectations of the society they live in. “A Psalm of Life” is romantic due to relationship between art and death expressed through the symbolism and theme.
Poetry has been used for many years to express complex ideas, feelings and situations to others. Good morning everyone, my name is Sophie Mantellato from Carmel College, and I have been asked to present a seminar on ‘Themes in Poetry’ at this year’s literary festival, Celebrating Poetry. Firstly, I would like to thank the members of the festival committee for giving me the opportunity to attend the festival, and speak to you today. My seminar today will highlight the importance of reading and analyzing poetry, even in today’s modern world, where lots of teenagers find it difficult to be interested in studying poetry. What most people don’t realize is that poetry is in many things we read and listen to every day, without even realizing, like music. Today I am going to be sharing my point by analyzing my chosen poem ‘song’ by Christiania Rossetti, which explores the theme of death. The poet, Christiania Rossetti employs a variety of visual and sound devices to successfully outline the harsh reality of death and the emotional pain of losing someone you love.
It is my impression that a poem is complicated, obscure, and must have deep meaning. However, after reading William Carlos Williams’ poems, I felt like making a deep breath of fresh air. It was the first time I felt that poems could be simple like this. In his poems, everything is expressed in simple words. Even a reader as me, an international student, could understand his words easily. Also, the images he described are the common but neglected scenes. Nonetheless, when I closed the book, some of the images overlapped with my memory. It seemed like something happened before in my experience but I ignored. The fragments now look so beautiful. I especially like his poems To a Poor Old Woman, Poem, and Her Daughter. These three poems help me to find the beauty around me, help me to change a direction to see the world, help me to appreciate.
The poems achieve that delicate balance between being cliché, sentimental and being full of self-pity; and expressing empathy. This is done because though the overview of the poem is simple and direct, there are some strong words which are sprinkled throughout with such apt accuracy that they intensify the powerful feelings that a man experiences when he is torn between his past and present
Many poets choose to write about death because it is one of the few things that all creatures have in common. Reading about the end of life forces readers to think critically and introspectively about the rest of their own lives and eventual deaths. While many fear dying, poets can illuminate just how valuable time left on Earth is. Both John Keats and Robert Frost take advantage of the structure of the sonnet as well as pensive and powerless moods in “Bright Star” and “The Oven Bird” respectively to demonstrate their frustrations in coming to terms with mortality.
