In this dream a child tells Santiago to go after a treasure located by the Egyptian pyramids. Santiago is confused by the message of the dream and goes to a gypsy woman to try and understand the dream. She says that he should go to Egypt in pursuit of the treasure. This leads to Santiago meeting a magical man who turns out to be the King of Salem. He says that going to Egypt is Santiago’s personal legend and he should set off for his journey tomorrow. This journey leads to Santiago arriving in Tangier and a robber taking all of the money Santiago brought in his journey towards the Egyptian pyramids. This leaves Santiago by himself as he now has to find a way to push through adversity and get to his destination. Dream on is about following your dreams and aspirations in life by following your journey. “Dream until your dreams come true” is a line highlighted in the song that captures the purpose of following your dreams. As the power of a song resides completely in its lyrics, it is no longer surprising that music can be healing, inspiring, or even motivating. After introducing this insight to my life, it became very rare for me to listen to any Imagine Dragons’ song without it leaving an impact on my life and my perspectives. Imagine Dragons is a rock band whose music tends to address both personal and social issues. It’s Time, one of their biggest hits and most influential songs, was written by the band’s lead singer Dan Reynolds during a difficult time in his life. “ I was not very happy with who I was, I guess, and I wanted to make some changes” says the singer in an interview with Purevolume , in which he addresses It’s Time as a poem he wrote to express
Knowing the personal, social or political context of a work of art can have an impact on how to judge the art in question in a few different ways. For example, a certain painting can be an expression of art from the artist related to a silent and subtle political protest. Besides, music can also have personal, social and political context attached to it. One song that generated a lot of polemic was “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” by the Beatles. Knowing the social context behind the song, fans soon connected the initials from the song with the drug “LSD”, which changes the way in which people interpreted the lyrics as a whole, such as the song being an analogy to a hallucination caused by drugs.
The song “If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out” by Cat Stevens, featured repeatedly in the film and on the soundtrack of Harold and Maude (1971), was an original work created for the film. It best represents the film and the ideas portrayed in it through the film’s main characters by relating to them through uplifting lyrics and meanings that can be associated with the pasts and presents of the characters. It describes the way one yearns to live and displays the way the other does.
Evanescence is an American rock band known for song, Bring Me to Life. Bring Me to Life is a song about being lost and in a state of depression until you find that one person to break you out of that sad state. This song was inspired by the lead singer’s, Amy Lee’s, husband. She says that when she first met her husband that he could somehow see inside of her and bring her to life when at the time she was going though a hard time (Edwards, Evanescence’s Amy Lee: how we made Bring Me to Life).
Ludacris does a remarkable job of portraying his message about the struggles that some adolescents are faced with. “Runaway Love”, by Ludacris, featuring Mary J. Blige (2007), represents the theme of struggle through hip-hop and rap music. It is about little girls who are “stuck up in the world on their own.” They have to take care of themselves because the people they are around do not care about them. They range from nine to eleven years in age, and their goal in life, at such a young age, is to run away from home. Ludacris is trying to get the listener to realize the struggles that even children have to face because adults are not the only ones who have problems, like most people believe. He is very successful in
Santiago starts out as a normal young man that has the same reoccurring dream when he sleeps under a sycamore tree that grows out of an abandoned church where a young boy tells Santiago to find the treasure at the Pyramids in Egypt. Santiago, not trusting his instinct of what the dream means, goes to a Gypsy dream interpreter
Just as the little boy was about to show Santiago where exactly the treasure is located at, he wakes up. “It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting,” he thought. Santiago later went to go see a gypsy woman that knew how to interpret dreams to see if she could inform him about what his dream meant. The quote mentioned earlier shows how he had the idea that if he can make his dream come true he would become happy with himself. His dream is providing hope something to believe in, something to aim for.
What are dreams? Some would say they are imaginations and fantasies, whereas others would claim dreams to be their aspirations, desires, and hopes, something they want to achieve someday. Aerosmith uses the latter group’s meaning of dreams in their song “Dream On”. The song exposes how one spends their whole life reaching the goals and wants that may never be all fulfilled, but continues to dream and hope, corresponding with the difficulties the band itself faced during the start of their career and how they kept trying to get to the top.
‘No matter gay, straight, or bi, I was born to survive’. In the words of lady GaGa herself it doesn’t matter who you marry, what your gender is or what’s you race you just need to accept others and yourself. Lady GaGa’s song ‘Born this Way’ informs others about self-acceptance in her new album ‘Born this way’. This song is about people abusing others and reflecting badly on them self because of their race, gender and choice in who they marry. Lady GaGa expresses her thoughts about people’s issues to say it doesn’t matter who you are because you were born that way.
The Imagine Dragons song “Smoke and Mirrors” aligns with Santiago’s inability to make a decision on where he wants to go. All through Santiago’s adventure to complete his personal legend, Santiago had to make multiple decisions, including the choice to search for his “treasure” and “abandon” a girl named Fatima, or stay with “a woman of the desert” for the rest of his time. (Coelho 122) Correspondingly in “Smoke and Mirrors,” the singer is unable to choose the best path, so the singer asks his heart for help. The conflict began when Santiago launched his quest, where he worked for a crystal merchant. Although Santiago was making a good amount of money, he wanted to make more, so he suggested that the shop had a display case and some better
First recorded in 1931 by Oswald George Nelson, known as Ozzie Nelson, with his orchestra, “Dream a Little Dream of Me” came into existence. Two days later, after Ozzie Nelson had recorded “Dream a Little Dream of Me”, the song was again recorded on February 18, 1931 by orchestra leader and musician Wayne King. Since those first two recordings of “Dream a Little Dream of Me” there have been approximately 60 versions by many well-known artists of which included Mama Cass Elliot in 1968 with the group The Mamas and the Papas.
Santiago’s dream sequence mentioned at the beginning of the novella is one of the most significant symbols in the novella. He dreams that “he was going
The song "The message" by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five depicts the struggle of young black adults growing up in society. The struggle to make it out of poverty can be compared to survival of the fittest in a jungle. Only the strong would survive and adapt to the changes to fit in. Trying their best to make a betterment with whatever little society offers. Being a young black African American in the early 1980's was not easy. It was easier to live the fast life and gain fast money by being part of the drug community. Drugs, guns, and money was glamorized and this is what the young adults looked at as a means of getting rich. In the songs, a young man talks about how he is trying hard to hold on to the little bit of sanity he has left in his soul. He talks about the struggle he endures while trying not to get pushed over the edge. He was born an innocent child who's blind to the ways of mind kind. Growing up he faced many challenges and had to fight
The iconic American dream is to live by a beach, lay on lounge chairs, get tan from the sun, sink feet into the soft sand, listen to the calm waves roll in, and laugh with friends and family. However, the reality is money has to be earned through work to make a living, children have to be born to continue the generations, and time flies by too fast for people to live the American dream. Malcolm Kelley and Tony Oller are two young, twenty-four year old men who are not thinking about starting their own families or getting a job at high paying corporation, like a regular post-college adult would do. In the song, “American Dream,” they talk about moving to California to find exciting opportunities and “live and die before they get old” (line 35).
