“A man may work from dusk to dawn, but a woman`s work is never done.” Throughout the piece “Cleaning: The Final Feminist Frontier” by Jessica Grose, she explains why she feels American women are raised to feel as if they`re meant to be housewives and housewives only. Many young American women just like Grose grow up feeling as if “a woman’s work is never done.” Grose`s piece was published in the New Republic in 2013, Jessica argues that although men have stepped up somewhat from the Eisenhower era and started taking more care of their children but they still do not do half as much cleaning as women do. Jessica, however, also proposes solutions on how to combat cleaning being portrayed as only a woman’s job and break the stereotypes. In the article, she said, “Only about 2 percent of commercials featuring men showed them doing domestic tasks.” If more commercials appealed to men, not only women, men may be more apt to taking on more of the cleaning tasks in the home. She proposes the idea of using “gadgets” to make household cleaning more fun for everyone in the home not just men. Adding to her argument she used many reputable sources which helped add to her appeals towards ethos. Some of those include, “sociologists Judith Treas and Tsui-o Tai”, “a 2008 study from the University of New Hampshire”, “P&G North America Fabric Care Brand Manager, Matthew Krehbiel”, and “the author of The Outsourced Self”. Using these sources and explaining them further, Grose was able to convince her readers that she is a reputable author and can be trusted that her argument is for all the right reasons. She shows her readers that she has done full research which backs her topic and strengthens her argument greatly. Without these sources and the usage of facts and statics her argument would not be very strong because it would all just be based on her opinion. Combs 3
