The Choices We Make There are many questions that we might ask to better understand a person’s choices. One of these questions is, “What drives us to undertake a mission?” Depending on the person, there can be many answers to this question. In the two texts, Barrio Boy and Apollo 13, the main characters were trusting to successfully achieve their goals. Not only were both the crew in Apollo 13 and Ernesto Galarza trusting, but they were brave and dedicated too. In Barrio Boy, Ernesto Galarza’s goal or mission was to learn the English language and become a good American. In Apollo 13, however, the mission was, at first, to get to the moon, but when the circumstances changed, their mission was to return home safely.The crew in Apollo 13, …show more content…

Like Galarza, the crew in “Apollo 13” were brave, and dedicated. To be able to go into space through NASA, a person goes through training and work, which shows that the crew was dedicated because they made it through all the training and into space. They were brave because going into space is a huge risk. In the text it said that “The chances of short circuits caused apprehension, but thanks to the safeguards built into the command module after the disastrous Apollo 1 fire in January 1967, no arching took place.” So, there had already been a disaster and yet the crew went up anyway. Even when the oxygen tank exploded, the crew did not give up. In paragraph 13, it describes how the crew worked to cut down on necessities so they would have enough to last them, “The crew conserved water. They cut down to six ounces each per day, a fifth of normal intake, and used fruit juices; they ate hot dogs and other wet-pack foods when they ate at all.” The crew in Apollo 13 were very brave and dedicated to complete their mission of returning home safely.
