In Salem, Oregon a Hansen family lived there. The son is named Scott Hansen, he is an only child. One night the parents decided to go out, and hire a babysitter for Scott. Later that night the parents had a bit too much to drink, and decided to drive home. They decided to go on the backroads, because they were drunk. It was all fun and games until suddenly they saw their life flash before their eyes. It turns out that there was a semi going really fast, and hit them. When the ambulance got there they were dead on the scene. The hospital called his babysitter, and told her the terrible news. She dropped the phone when she heard, and started sobbing. Then Scott came up to her and asked her what had happened. She told him what had happened to …show more content…
“ Oh really, are you that naive to believe that!?” said Travis.
“ I hate both of you! I never want to see you again!” stated Travis to both of them. Later that week sirens in the town started going off. That meant there was going to be a tornado. At that moment the whole town knew what had to happen. That meant they had a couple of hours to grab all of their valuable stuff, and head to the school basement where the rest of the town would be. Every family grabbed photos, clothes, food, and other personal stuff. Then went to the school basement. By three hours the whole town was down in the school basement, with all of their stuff. They had to squish together and the whole town all had to share one full bathroom. They had to stay there for a whole week, that’s how bad the tornado was. This tornado was the longest tornado ever. But in the end no one got hurt.
When the people came out of the school everything was destroyed. All the homes, hospitals, stores, parks, and restaurants. But they had each other. People from around oakville helped them evacuate the town, so it could be cleaned up. All of the sudden Scott fell and started having a seizure. His family took action fast, they took a helpers’ car and went to the closest hospital. After he got there the doctors started surgery right away. The family had to wait a few hours to see what was going on. The doctor finally came out of the surgery room and had to prepare
It was a small town in Cornersville, Ohio. Nothing much ever happened in this small town until one day. A new family moved in one afternoon. Everyone was surprised because no one even noticed the house being built. Everyone was still delighted that they moved in because the couple, Bob and Nancy, were very friendly. Bob and Nancy helped with all the activities in town and were very generous. A couple of weeks after they moved in, a lot of strange things began. Money started disappearing, the lights in the town went out every night except for Bob and Nancy's lights, even people's pets went missing. One night, everyone's lights went out at 11:30 as usual, except there was an extremely loud noise. The neighbors went outside to see where all the
How many people have you met in your life that is stronger because of a difficult experience they went through? Most people are because we take these difficult experiences and grow from them and become better people. This is the exact case is expressed in the play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller. The story begins in Salem, Massachusetts 1692 right in the middle of a period of witchcraft hysteria. During this time many people were accused of being witches and wrongly convicted by judges Danforth and Hathorne. The characters in the story are struggling because of a girl named Abigail who gets caught practicing witchcraft and then starts naming and accusing others so that she doesn’t get in trouble; one of these people being a well-respected farmer, John Proctor’s, wife Elizabeth. The title, The Crucible, refers to a test, trial, ordeal, formation by fire, and vessel baked to resist heat, and the entire story is an allegory meaning it has a hidden meaning. John Proctor symbolizes a crucible by embodying the definition of one, as he went through a test and was formed by fire.
Arthur Miller’s Focus (1945) is a revolutionary work that highlights racism, especially anti-Semitism, in America. Written during the last year of the Second World War, Focus is a groundbreaking work in every sense of the word inasmuch as it is the first literary work that deals directly with anti-Semitism in the United States. Statistically speaking, there were two main waves of Jewish immigrants to the United States between 1820 and 1920. According to Susan Haberle, “the first group of Jewish people came from Germany, Austria, and Hungary. These immigrant left to seek a better life” (Haberle 6). The second group was the biggest wave; they came between 1880 and 1920: “these immigrants came from Poland, Romania, Russia, and other eastern
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is an interpretation of the Salem witch trials of 1692 in Puritan Massachusetts in which religion, justice, individuality and dignity play a vital role. These factors define the characteristics of many of the most significant characters in the play. Some of them being John Proctor, Rebecca Nurse, Reverend Hale, Danforth and many others. The Salem witch trials were a result of the lack of expression of individuality and the fact that no individual could expect justice from the majority culture as a result of the deterioration of human dignity in the Puritan society of Salem.
Few people are willing to stand up to the overwhelming power of authority, especially during a time like the Red scare. Hardly any authors are able to recognize meaningful similarities between the present times and an event that happened many years ago—and write about it effectively. Only one has had the courage and intelligence to do both. Arthur Miller was an American author who wrote plays, essays, and stories and has published works dating from to 1936 through 2004. The Crucible, one of his most famous plays, premiered in New York on January 22, 1953 (InfoTrac). It is a historical-fiction story set in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. The witch hunt described in this play is similar to the Red Scare, an anti-communist movement led by
Through the use of a variety of textual features and contrasting characterisation, Arthur Miller explores the theme of personal integrity to invite a variety of reader responses. Miller positevly characterises those who have mastered or are developing towards a high moral standard as illustrated by Rebecca Nurse and John Proctor. The author negatively characterises those who abandon integrity in favour of personal interests, such as Abigail Williams. Through the examination of integrity by Miller, the reader is positioned to realize the high cost of maintaining ones personal integrity and invites them to understant that remainging faithful to ones beliefs is extremly challenging and can involve the ultimate sacrifice. As the play is an allegory,

'A view from the bridge' by Arthur Miller is a tragic intense play about family struggle, lust, passion and deceit. My aim is too look at the relationship of Catherine and Eddie. To understand the relationship, we must understand the atmosphere and culture. To do this we need to know why Miller wrote the play, background history and why this is significant to understanding the relationship between Catherine and Eddie.

Arthur Miller was born Arthur Asher Miller on October 17, 1915 in Manhattan to parents Isidore and Augusta Miller. He was the second son of the Jewish immigrants who owned a clothing company called S. Miller & Sons. The clothing company was such a hit, they could afford an apartment overlooking central park and a chauffeur to drive them around. However, just before Miller’s 14th birthday in October 1929, the stock market, which the Miller family was highly invested in, crashed. They lost everything and ended up moving to a more affordable home in Brooklyn. After graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1932, he went to work at an auto-parts store where he stored up money for college. All the while he took night
Arthur Miller once said, "Theatre is so endlessly fascinating because it’s so accidental. It’s so much like life." For years, a playwright's goal was to make the stage a place to cultivate and create life as it is. The public's thirst for raw, bona fide literature was quenched when Arthur Miller wrote plays "so much like life" (Miller) itself. He did not find perfection in perfect, but in the imperfect. Psychology, Art, and History, are not only found within the text, but they are intertwined with every character's objective and subtext. Arthur Miller is the best playwright, not only for molding a character's chase for the American Dream, but he has written a revolutionary view on female characters, and has found the beauty in the tragic hero.
Arthur Miller, in his plays, deals with the injustice of society's moral values and the characters who are vulnerable to its cruelty. A good majority of these plays were very successful and earned numerous awards. According to Brooks Atkinson, a critic for the New York Times, Miller's play Death of a Salesman was successful because the play "is so simple in style and so inevitable in theme that it scarcely seems like a thing that has been written and acted. For Mr. Miller has looked with compassion into the hearts of some ordinary Americans and quietly transferred their hopes and anguish to the theater" (Babusci 1261). This play, in 1949, received the Pulitzer Prize, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the

The education system stresses that in order to be content, students must achieve a high GPA and attend a form of secondary education. Career awareness is also taught as early as elementary school, with a purpose of promoting a “successful” American experience. The leaders of the United States utilize this tactic because research affirms that “people who wonder about their future exhibit an especially healthy form of curiosity, one that augurs greater well-being, or contentment, over time” (Scientific American Mind 1). However, not every member of society possesses this curiosity. Thus, authors such as Arthur Miller depict characters with various contentment levels, and express the backgrounds of these characters in order to convey a realistic, yet conveying story reflecting the American experience.
