Families, friends, and the community in addition to experiences all have significant contributions to how people view and sense the world. Ethnicity refers to the characteristics of a particular group of people including skin, hair, and eye color. On the other hand, culture refers to shared patterns of behavior, cognitive constructs, and interactions an individual in a particular society learns through socialization at a particular time. It includes religion, language, social habits, arts, and music. Since culture and ethnicity comprise of the most personal attributes of an individual, they affect one’s decision-making, actions, and values.
Culture and ethnicity has a very profound effect in shaping the way individuals view the world. Many studies have proven that individuals from different cultures will view and perceive things differently, probably because of how their individual cultures shaped their view of the world. Amy Tan’s “A Pair of Tickets” provides a brief narrative concerning the reminiscence and conscience of Jing-mei, a Chinese American woman on a trip to meet her half-sisters for the first time. The young woman is fully Americanized while the mother is a Chinese immigrant, trying to communicate Chinese stories to her daughter, who is completely ignorant of their Chinese heritage.
