Imagine, the government being your plug. In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (BNW), the citizens get a drug called Soma from their government. Soma works as a miracle drug, in that it gives the mental effects of euphoria, but doesn’t give any negative physical effects. When I first heard about this so called, “miracle drug” I was immediately intrigued. I was enthralled by the idea of a government giving its citizens drugs, and how Soma was a major part of how their society functions. Throughout the story, I thought that one of the most important ideas brought from the story was Soma. While reading, I made an association from Soma to a real life drug, marijuana. I chose the topic of marijuana being used medically as well as …show more content…
Marijuana’s psychoactive ingredient is cannabinoids. Marijuana contains more than 100 cannabinoids. Scientists and illegal manufacturers have made many different types of cannabinoids in their labs, which leads to various types of marijuana species (strains) that act differently from one to the other (Khamsi). The diversity of the drug increases the versatility of it when used in the medical, and recreational fields, to give the user different effects varying from each strain. Marijuana’s recreational use was looked upon as dangerous as other Schedule 1 drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, but there has never been a single case of a human death from an overdose in its history (Hampton). The government does not know all of marijuana’s effects, but puts it in a category of other lethal drugs which prevents some quality research from being done in private parties that aren 't funded by the government. The primary psychoactive compound found in marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol or THC for short. THC basically stimulates your brain cells which causes them to release dopamine. Dopamine helps control the brain’s “reward and pleasure centers” and gives off “the high”. The scientific way THC works is that it mimics the structure of endocannabinoids, which are molecules which the human body produces naturally. Endocannabinoids work with cannabinoid receptors to regulate appetite, mood, and memory. Since THC mimics the shape of endocannabinoids, they
Humans have always craved and strived for perfection in all aspects of life. Perfection is defined as “the highest degree of proficiency, skill or excellence as in some art” according to the Collins English Dictionary(perfection). Many people believe that an excessive effort to become perfect can be counteractive and lead to dysfunctionality. In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, characters live in a dystopian society that sprouted from the human yearning for perfection. Although the citizens in Brave New World are genetically engineered to be perfect individuals and are on soma constantly to keep them happy and efficient, they lack individuality.. Brave New World is a novel that clearly demonstrates that trying to create a perfect society can result in loss of individuality.
Marijuana is the third most popular recreational drug in America, after alcohol and nicotine products. It is a greenish-gray mixture of the dried, shredded leaves and flowers of cannabis sativa, the hemp plant. The main psychoactive part of cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol or also known as THC. It contains THC as well as over a hundred other cannabinoids. THC is a psychoactive chemical. Marijuana is often used for its mental and physical effects such as a “high” or a “stoned” feeling. It has been know that there are benefits to using marijuana such as euphoria or heightened mood, increased appetite and many others. However there are short term side effects which may include dry mouth, decrease in short term memory, red eyes and often
Soma is "Euphoric, narcotic, and pleasantly hallucinant” which seems somewhat comparable to drugs like LSD (Huxley). LSD became a craze in society during the 1900’s and even Huxley got involved. Huxley took mind expanding drugs like mescaline and LSD often for about ten years (Drugs). Huxley keeps the people in his dystopian society almost completely influenced by Soma. It can be inferred that Huxley saw that drugs kept society and himself happy and that drug kept peace in the mind.
The active ingredient in marijuana is “tetrahydrocannabinaol” or THC. Smoking marijuana draws the THC from the lungs to the brain where it suppresses neurons causing distortions of time and perception. It also causes lack of coordination, feelings of euphoria, heightened sensitivity, paranoia, and sometimes uncontrolled hilarity. Within seconds of smoking marijuana muscles relax, eyes redden and pulse rate increases. Marijuana is a plant that can grow and thrive just about
The main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, which is also the most responsible for its intoxicating effects, is known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. THC is one of the cannabinoids found in marijuana, and there are over sixty of them. It is the cannabinoid that produces the high, and although there are other cannabinoids present, the effect is different with the absence of THC. They interact with THC to affect its impact in a variety of ways: enhancing or attenuating it, speeding up or slowing down its onset, and influencing how long the effect lasts (Caulkin 7).
A naturally endocannabinoid in our bodies is called anandamide, which in Sanskrit means “a blissful amide” and is also found in other species including birds, reptiles and fish. Since our bodies produce their own form of “natural THC”, however tiny the amount, it is logical that humans are so drawn to marijuana’s herb! Both THC and anandamide produce their effects through lipid receptors, known as cannabinoid receptors, located on the cell surface throughout our bodies and have similar effects on our experience such as pain, appetite and memory. Cannabinoid receptors are the proteins that sit in the cell membrane and function like gate keepers, controlling which messages from outside the cell to shut down and which to let in. When THC binds
When a receptor receives information, it causes changes in the nerve cell. The chemical in marijuana that has a big impact on the brain is called THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). It is the main active chemical in marijuana. Scientists recently discovered that some areas in the brain have a lot of THC receptors, while other have very few or none. These clues are helping researchers figure out exactly how THC works in the brain.
It is believed that THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is to be the main ingredient that produces the psychoactive effect to patient. It is mostly smoked, smoked in blunts and/or use in pipe or a bong (DEA, 2011). Some people are also mixing marijuana with food or brewed as a tea. Most of the marijuana users are experiencing pleasure, memory, thought, concentration, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement. Marijuana is a Schedule I substance which has therefore the highest potential for abuse with no medical use (CDC, 2015).
Today's marijuana is much more powerful and much more addictive than it was a generation ago.’" “Federal laws classify marijuana as a schedule I drug along with heroin and LSD. Although marijuana may be addictive to some, the potential for forming an addiction may be lower than with some prescription drugs.” (Live Science) Regardless, the reality is that marijuana IS a drug.
Brave New World written by Aldous Huxley immediately shows the scientific discoveries that are happening in the future. Chapter one starts out with showing amazing ground breaking scientific actions for example human cloning and very fast production of human life. This is all being done in a futuristic government ran factory specifically for creating human life. The human life is made in the factory and are split up into five castes or “groups” which are Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), also known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is the main psychoactive substance found in the cannabis plant. Cannabis isn’t just a single drug molecule, like alcohol or cocaine, but a mix of over 420 different chemical components. 61 of the called cannabinoids are unique to marijuana. THC is the chemical that triggers cannabis’ main drug action and effects in the body and brain. THC is like a feel-good chemical bomb that explodes on contact, and then breaks up into at least 80 different by products (or metabolites) before it’s eliminated from the body. The process starts as soon as THC enters the blood stream, and begins zeroing in on cannabinoid receptors in the brain and central nervous system Once it checks into the brain, THC takes its own time in checking out. Unlike many other drugs, which are excreted from the body within hours, THC metabolites stick around--stored
Marijuana is the most unique of all the psychoactive drugs I read about because it is the only one that doesn't affect a specific neurotransmitter. "Rather, marijuana disrupts the membranes of neurons and affects the function of a variety of neurotransmitters and hormones." (pg 155). Marijuana acts as an agonist, in which it mimics and increases the neurotransmitters. The main cause of this is the THC within the

It is also known as Marijuana along with other names. Cannabis plant can be used as a psychoactive drug or medicine. Cannabis contains an active ingredient that is called “delta-9 tetrahydro-cannabinol also known as THC and also contains a family of a compound called “cannabinoids” which produces the “high” experiences from consuming the
In exploring how to stop smoking weed, you have to understand why you become addicted to it. Marijuana is extracted from a hemp plant called cannabis sativa. Cannabis sativa contains a property that can cause the smoker to become unconscious. In marijuana, there are more than 400 chemicals. The psychoactive property in marijuana is THC. The effects of THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) in the smoker depend on a variety of factors including type of cannabis, soil, weather and the harvest time. Nowadays, the pots are made
