Sports Illustrated writer, Lee Jenkins, writes about the impact of a small-town football coach had on his community, before and after death in the article “A Good Man Down.” The author explains the life of Ed Thomas, the head coach for the Apilington-Parkersburg football team in Iowa. Ed Thomas was shot and killed while training his athletes by Mark Becker. Lee Jenkins begins by using very detail accounts to bring out the pathos of the town, bringing the audience to feel emotionally connected to the town of Parkersburg. In the beginning of this article Jenkins explains the importance of the field to Ed Thomas. Every morning Ed walked the field, looking for any imperfection to correct. Dave Meyer, the Apilington-Parkersburg principal said, “It’s probably the best field in the state.” The field was so import to Ed Thomas and he took such great care of it that it was even named after him. “The field has standard-issue metal bleachers, no box office, no fancy scoreboard. What makes it special, what makes it sacred, is the love that Thomas poured into the turf.” Ed Thomas did anything he could help the town out. On some Sundays, he’d fill in for the pastor if they were not able to preach. He gave newborn boys “FUTURE FALCONS” certificates. He did everything from being a driver’s ed instructor to mowing his precious field. He had no idea how much more of an impact he would have.

The theme of isolation is a heavy premise throughout all three books that help to shape not only certain characters but also provide insight on fundamental qualities of their identities. The object of this essay is to prove who seems to be the most solitary character between the books Light in August by William Faulkner, A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. In these stories, the idea of isolation is the loneliness that has been experienced in a characters life. Some characters have experienced their loneliness since early childhood while others have been kept isolated involuntarily. Although these three characters have taken different approaches in their lives, they all ended up isolated from society. As Alfred Kazin believes that Joe Christmas is the most solitary character in American fiction, I would like to discuss how both the villain in A Good Man is Hard to Find and the heroine of The Yellow Wallpaper would not rival Kazin’s opinion. Joe Christmas in Light in August proves to be the most solitary character I have read about, as he is never able to become a full member of society.
While searching through the round, grey tables and plastic, purple chairs, we came up on the football player, Ethan Jerkowski. Abby and I, McKenzie, inquired him about his favorite things about the new school; without a thought, he responded, “The football coaches.” Continuing the questionnaire, we pursued further by asking him why. “I like that they actually care about us, and that they want us to get better as a team and as an individual.”
The story takes place in a small town in Iowa, Parkersburg, it was the summer of 2009 on June 24, 2009 Ed Thomas, the football coach at A-P was tragically killed by one of his former players, Mark Becker. Ed Thomas was a bevelled man not only in the town of Parkersburg but in many other towns also. One of my favorite quotes from Ed is that “ If all I have taught you is how to tackle and block I have failed you as a coach.” Ed believed that everyone was put on earth to do something good
In “A Good Man Down” written by Lee Jenkins about Applington-Parkersburg coach Ed Thomas, we are given insight into the life of a man that by the end of the article we wish we had known. The article is written in pathos and it seems directly to the heart. It speaks of a man who “… delivered sermons when ministers were away. He consoled husbands whose wives were ill. He presented baby boys with FUTURE FALCONS certficatets.”(Jenkins) Ed Thomas is a man whose character shined through and we see that throughout the article.
In Rick Bragg’s article, “Down Here,” he portrays the importance of football in the South through his use of the rhetoric triangle. He establishes ethos through his stories of growing up in the South and giving various examples of Southerners that held football in such a bright light. He gives a logical reason for why the South is so dominant in the sport, establishing logos. Finally, Bragg uses the hardships of the South to create an overwhelming sense of pathos. Bragg is able to combine all three of these elements, ethos, logos, and pathos, to create a story that draws in the readers attention and has them hanging on to every word.
The whole reason I’m writing this essay is because Demaryius Thomas is an inspiration to me. He inspires me to work hard and do my best. If you watch his games he puts all of his effort into the game. Whether he is winning or losing. But i know he loves winning. One time before the first game of a new season he said “We know it’s a new year. Everybody 0-0. The main thing is you win or you go home”. Demaryius inspires me to play football because he is just really good at it and I love watching him play.

Sustaining the ambitions of not only themselves but the alumni and town of Odessa, Texas is a lot to ask from a young adult. That’s exactly what Permian football provides to the people of Odessa, where the post economic boom of the oil business has left the town in a racially tense, economic crisis. The lights on Permian High School’s football field are the only sanctuary for the west Texas town. Socially and racially divided, Odessa’s mass dependence on high school football constructs glorified expectations for the football team to temporarily disguise the disappointments that come with living in a town tagged as the “murder capital” of
The movie “We Are Marshall” is a movie about football. The movie isn’t just a normal football movie. It’s a movie that shows how a town and a college rebuilds after the tragedy that they went through. The town of Huntington, West Virginia and Marshall University went through the tragedy of a plane crash that killed seventy-five people, including football players, coaches, fans, boosters, mothers, fathers, doctors, lawyers and even governors. From this experience people had a choice to rebuild or continue to mourn their loved ones. Nate Ruffin, Donald Dedmon and Coach Jack Lengyel chose to rebuild through ways of leadership, optimism and morals.

It also introduces us to and establishes Olympian Jim Thorpe, a multi-sport player once considered the world’s greatest athlete, and legendary coach, Glenn “Pop” Warner.
Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find’ tells of a seemingly normal family with a bit of dysfunction. Throughout this tale, the author fabricates a number of characters, some inconsiderable, others full of depth and history that present themselves wildly open to interpretation. Looking into O’Connor’s past, it is clear to see her relationship with a number of these fictional minds and pull from these the meaning behind her hidden pain and anguish. We are therefore presented with a mother and sons family who are prisoners in a manipulative, destructive relationship.
A few good men starring Jack Nicholson Tom Cruise and Demi Moore is about ethic in the marines. The movie is about two marines who are accused of murdering there fellow officer, during the incestigation it is discovered that there is a practice called “code red” this is a unethical and unofficial disciplinary measure by the marine squad when a member goes against the unit. Within sports, pressure is always there; you have to learn to deal with it. H. G. Bissinger’s book, Friday Night Lights, hones in on the football team the Permian Panthers of Odessa. Through this focus on the team, one can see how football is an integral part of the town thriving, maintaining its hopes and dreams. Despite the racial and social divide within the community, those Friday night games become a place where dreams may be made possible. In this way, sports, specifically football, not only have an impact on the players but the community as well.
