Analysis Of 5d

Decent Essays

5D is an original piece that draws upon science-fiction elements and is enjoyable, mysterious and intriguing. The story follows the protagonist, James, a journalist investigating the secretive cult-like group 5D. I was immersed in the story and wanted to discover more about James, his motives and the world he has uncovered. The story tackles some interesting ideas like different dimensions, however this isn’t fully explored, leaving the reader in a state of suspense. It effectively uses relatively authentic characters, descriptive setting and controlled use of structure, plot, and point of view.

The concept of other dimensions was a little difficult for me to understand, however my limited exposure to the science fiction genre may explain …show more content…

The limited number of characters allows the story to focus on James and Al, and emphasises their motivations. James was easy to empathise with, as his initial distrust is understandable as he is alone and worried about the missing people as well as his own well-being. This is a typical reaction for people in his situation, which makes his character relatable. James’ insights establish setting, his personality, as well as discomfort, and Al’s character. For example, the sentence “The fucking things wont stop looking at him” effectively conveys James’ anxiety and frustration, which readers can identify with (p.1). Additionally, James’ use of conversational language and colloquialisms makes his character seem laidback. Conversely, Al, the Archdeacon, is set up as an antagonist through Jack’s observations and the use of effective dialogue. Al’s formal, long pieces of dialogue highlight the information he provides in a simultaneously clinical and creepy way. His cold revelations add to the chilling tone of the text. Similarly, Samel’s use of dialogue adds to the text’s eerie tone. His odd word breaks, like “newfriend” and the badly phrased “I forward to seeing you again” highlight his alien and unnatural ability to interact with humans (p.3). There were a few occasions when characters behaved unusually, like when Al grins heartily, or James speaks unnaturally when being uncharacteristically hostile to Al, and when Samel …show more content…

Although not original, the chronological order of the story flows cohesively especially as paragraphs are typically quite short, and the selected events drive the plot forward. This is helpful to the reader, as the straightforward structure allows them to focus on the events that unfold within the narrative. The story begins with the sentence “As James was being shepherded through the hallway, every instinct in his body told him to run.” This is a very intriguing way to begin a story, and it grabbed my attention and encouraged me to read further. The story also effectively handles tension and conflict, as it ends at a point where the outcome of James’ experience is unknown. The use of third person limited point of view is consistently used and highlights the strange new world the protagonist enters. I was able to understand James’ thoughts, yet the distance created by using third person point of view added to the alienating atmosphere of the text. This effective use of structure, plot and point of view drive the story forward and create atmosphere and
