Did you know that when an whale is kept in captivity its lifespan is cut almost in half? (Smolowe, par. 3). Whales in captivity are often abused, underfed, and poorly cared for. They become much more aggressive and develop completely different personalities than if they are left in the wild. They are a danger to the trainers that work with them, one whale at SeaWorld has killed 3 people. The whales are captured and forced to live in swimming pools that are barely bigger than they are and perform shows.
Whales in captivity are held in swimming pools that are barely bigger than they are. According to Melissa Sawyer, “In the wild, they can easily travel 50 to 100 miles a day. However, in captivity, a typical tank is only twice their size, forcing the animals to swim in small circles or float aimlessly.” (Sawyer 1). Tilikum, a whale at SeaWorld, has been responsible for the deaths of three SeaWorld employees (Johnson, par. 1). Tilikum was captured from his mother in 1983. After a year in a holding tank he was shipped to a park in Vancouver Island where he spent 14 hours a day in a small, dark tank with two females that bullied him. In 1991 he pulled a trainer into the water and drowned her. He was then sold to SeaWorld, where he began performing and the trainers were not told about his past (Johnson, par. 3).
