An Analysis Of Juveniles Should Be Killed As Adults For Violent Crimes

Too many minors have committed violent crimes and haven’t gotten the consequences they deserved. In Time magazine article, “Children without Pity” written by Nancy Traver, it shows how the crime rates are going up and many minors aren’t getting the consequence they need. Given the violence of their actions, minors who commit violent crimes should be tried as adults.

If a terrible crime is committed should it matter how old you are? Juveniles should be tried as adults because the juvenile system cannot keep up, the brains of juveniles are developed enough to know what they did, and trying them as adults will hold someone accountable.

Juvenile should not be convicted as adults for violent crimes because juveniles lose brain cells and connections that are responsible for controlling impulses, risk taking, and self control. taking a child and putting them in a prison or jail can mess with their mental state and they will get so accustomed to that sort of environment that they will feel insecure and end up committing another crime just to get back to the comforts of a prison cell because they feel like an outcast. Some teens suffer from mental instability and because of that instability that teenager will not understand that they are committing a crime.

Criminals under the age of eighteen are committing heinous crimes. Charging them as a minor because of their age does not ensure that they won’t commit the crime again. If they are tried as adults, because they should know better, the crime rates will be reduced. Juveniles should be tried as adults for serious crimes because it enforces discipline, prevents crime, and emotionally helps the victims families.

There are a lot of people out there who commit crimes, people of different race and age. I agree that at whatever age that the crime is committed that the punishment should be the same for every criminal. Everyone has different opinions on whether juveniles or teens should be sent to adult prison and my opinion is that they should be sent to adult prison. I have my reasons for saying this. When adults commit a crime they know what they are doing, they know what they are getting themselves into, and they know what possible punishment they could get.

Teens should be spent to adult jail for the crime they committed! In the late 1980s juveniles have been committing crimes during the period of this time, many of them were getting in trouble more often, crimes were getting more violent by this time. Justice Alito noted that , “Even a 17 ½ -year-old who set off a bomb in a crowded mall or guns down a dozen students and teacher is ‘child’ and must be given a chance to persuade a judge to permit his release into society…” In other words I agree that teens should be sentenced to life in prison, if I did the same crime I should be punished the same way as an adult who has committed the same crime because during this age I know what I am doing wrong and right. I believe that teen should be sentenced to life in prison because the victim's family reactions, rehabilitation, they should understand the consequences of their actions, mental health issues, and heinous crimes.

In the first place, all juveniles do have the ability to contrivance a homicide. For example, the death of a 10-year old, Jessica Ridgeway. An article from The Denver Post by RJ Stangosti stated, “Jessica Ridgeway was hunted, kidnapped and killed by a predator. Her murder was thoughtful, deliberate, and cunning in its planning and execution.” Her predator was only 17. This justifies that juveniles can “plan and execute” meticulously. Another example would in a case where a 15-year-old boy made a homemade bomb. According to CNN, he aimed to harm hundreds of students knowing the consequences. Therefore, I fail to see why a juvenile’s punishment must be disparate.

There has been much talk to whether or not juveniles should be convicted as adults for violent crimes. Juveniles should be convicted as adults for violent crimes because they are old enough and know right from wrong, have a trial by jury and a crime is a crime no matter the age.

If a juvenile, over fourteen has the ability and willingness to commit a violent crime they should be tried and punished as an adult. A fourteen year old knows right from wrong. He (or she) is able to tell whether they are committing a crime. If a juvenile is mature enough to commit an adult crime, they should be treated as an adult, and punished justly according to the adult law. The difference in age in two people should not determine their punishment if they have committed the same crime under the same or similar pretenses.

Criminals must be held accountable no matter if they are minors or not. Juveniles that commit these heinous crimes, such as murder, need to think about the families of the victim. If the juveniles are just tried in juvenile courts they usually will be sentenced with a less harsh sentence. These families of the victims feel that they are abandoned and feel less secure that the criminal can go out and victimize someone else.

Really, this is untrue. As said in Some Juvenile Killers Deserve Adult Justice, “a developing adolescent brain does not prevent deliberate, thoughtful actions” (Weir 1). Juveniles are aware of what they’re doing, no matter what the state of mine they are in. The development in the brain does not matter when it comes to making choices. A juvenile can still plan and execute a crime the same as an adult and sadly, some do. This does not mean that they should get off of the same punishment because of their age. Juveniles should receive a punishment that equates their crime.

Malcolm Ritter in the article, “Experts link teen Brains’ Immaturity, Juvenile Crime,” states that the “juvenile brain is still maturing in the teen years and reasoning and judgment are developing well into the early to mid 20s” (Ritter). Certainly people are different people at the age of twenty verses at the age of twelve. However when a child turns sixteen, they gain the ability to drive, and if they are mentally capable enough of following the rules of the road, certainly they should know how to follow the rules of our country. At this age, it should become obvious that what you have done is right or wrong and the possible consequences of that action. Because of this I believe in the most extreme cases, juveniles convicted of a murder who are sixteen and older should be sentenced in adult court and should be sentenced upwards of 25 years to life if their crime is considered severe enough. This is rule is necessary as in the case of Sarah Johnson, a sixteen year old girl that plotted to murder her parents, murdered her mom while she was sleeping and her dad after he had came out of the shower, and tried to pin the crime on an intruder (Stinson). Because of cases like this it is important to view the justice system as a grayscale, in which cases are taken one by one, viewed individually, and analyzed for an appropriate

Although the rate is decreasing on a positive note, it still does not justify the amount of juveniles we have in America. Juvenile justice is the field where criminal law is suitable to teenagers not old enough to be held responsible for crimes. I think juveniles who are committing accidental crimes should not be held for a lifetime sentence, but should still take responsibility and time for their actions.
