Amitai Etzioni a New Community

The first one being that the community is like a place that provides order, traditions and certain rules. For example when we are at a family reunion and its like rule to always say hello to your elders first, or that when you are about to hit the piñata the little ones go first, or something much simpler like the sitting place of each family member at the dinning table.

Throughout history we see a pattern that includes a boom in society alongside a boom in industry. As industry increases, many people move to cities, causing a lack of community and a greater sense of contribution to society as a whole. On the contrary, when we look at time periods with greater agricultural importance, there are many more close-knit family groups or small communities. This idea came into fruition after reading The New Community by Amitai Etzioni. This piece discusses the role of community and society, and how community is defined as unity and society is defined as diversity. On a basic level, we agreed with this statement. As industry booms, the role of the individual becomes less important, and the diverse skill set of a society becomes more important. In a community, there can be diversity, but all people involved need to have a strong commonality that bonds them. I agree more with an idea presented later in The New Community more. “What we need now are communities that balance both diversity and unity.”(Etzioni) This statement reflects our current society, which is extremely diverse. According to our textbook, community is defined as “people bound either by geography or by webs of communication, sharing common ties, and interacting with one another” (Hutchison, p. 298, 2012). Communities are all around us whether it be a school setting community or a social media community such as Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. This community can also be broken into two categories: One is territorial community, meaning the community has territory that it is on, and the other is relational community, meaning the community does not have a territory. When examining the theoretical approaches to community there are five theoretical approaches to community: “contrasting types approach, spatial arrangements approach, social systems approach, social capital approach, and conflict approach” (Hutchinson, p. 301, 2012). A community is an interacting group of various species and abiotic things that live within the same location. Each community is different due to being comprised of unique organisms and inanimate objects. The basic unit of community relies on survival. As stated by de Waal, the primate community is a prime example which displays how we perform innate behaviors to ensure our survival. The next level of community is the goal-oriented community. Goal-oriented communities strive to bring about change in their communities whether it be for better or worse. The goal-oriented community can be allotted into different categories. One type of an ambitious community is that of associations as described by Tocqueville. The other goal-oriented community is that of the revolutionary community. This community attempts to raise awareness about injustice found in a community and urges that members of the community fight to make injustice cease to exist. The final stage of community ends with the community that cares for the environment as a whole. Not only does it care for the living things that reside in the community, but it appreciates the nonliving things that are found in the community as well. The nature-loving community recognizes that everything within the community is necessary to have and to care for. Each of these communities start with having the need for survival but become more complex until they are able to incorporate love in their communities.

A community is established when more than two people share the same values and through time this personal connection evolves into a fellowship governed by rituals, traditions, and a particular form of communication that when taken together makes a group of individuals whether living in a specific geographical area or connected by ideals so distinct that their distinguishing marks allow them to stand out from among the crowd. They do not just believe in something like an organization but they need each other to survive and thrive. A good example is the Old Order Amish Mennonite community wherein the community serves as source of identity, strength and provides the reason why they should sustain the community’s way of life.

Community is very important and has many factors like kinship, unity, and identity. Community helps society because it creates solutions, provides security and reveals dedication. It discovers truthfulness. Communities are part of everyday life and have positive affects on its members.

Throughout my life, I have been privileged to know a strong sense of community. My understanding of community has been carved out and shaped by each community that I have been a part of and the subsequent life experiences that I have had by being a part of these communities. To me, community means a sense of belonging with people who have some capacity of like-mindedness. When you belong to a community, you feel like a piece of a larger puzzle that comes together to create a whole. Each community you belong to both influences you, and is influenced by you. Moreover, your belonging to a community generates a sense of unity and shares a common goal, value, or outlook.
