American Idol

“That rendition was impressive, but you do not look like an American Idol; however, we will give you one more chance. Welcome to Hollywood!” A person with a mediocre voice that is not stunningly attractive would have a harder time advancing to Hollywood on American Idol. As the judges say, an American Idol should be a distinct person with an exceptionally fantastic voice. Culture is the training or refining of intellectual faculties and the way of life for a particular people. My goal will be to critique the ideal of image on American Idol and discuss how people may or may not get though based on looks alone. There are tears and screams as contestants, one by one, get through to the next round. Along the way to fame, the contestants on American Idol receive mean, nasty and often degrading criticisms from the judges. Those who are not the most attractive seep through the auditions based on fantastic singing and have a much harder time pursuing their hopefully destined career compared to a naturally attractive singer. The drama that is stirred up during the auditions and throughout the show is why people tend to watch.

Image is a big factor on American Idol because whoever wins the competition receives a million dollar contract with a well-known recording producer. A record producer would not want a less than celebrity caliber person representing his or her label because image is a huge factor in our society and they know for a fact that someone not photogenic would not sell. They want someone who has some unique aspect to their appearance or personality that would attract people to buy their album. Since the recording producer works for Simon, it is partly his duty to make good decisions about who he says goodbye to, and who he puts though to the final thirty. Perhaps this is why Simon is so critical and mean to people, but that is what America loves about him. Since America loves first impressions and style, they will base their favorites on typically what they see from the show. Different people in our society will enjoy different things about different
