At some point in their life nearly every single American has witnessed or been a part of any degree of racism. While most people hide in the shadows while trying to ignore racism and its harmful effects, there are a few people, like Tony Kaye, who are courageous and bold enough challenge the norm and speak out and stand up for those who are in pain. In 1998 Tony Kaye directed American History X, a movie that directly shows the impacts that racism has on everyone, no matter what side of it you are on. Before reading this online review I would expect my adult readers to understand little to nothing about the background information about American History X. American History X is most easily comparable to the 2008 movie Gran Torino, directed by and starring Clint Eastwood. Both movies explore the meanings of racism and that by showing just a moment of compassion, our perception of others changes dramatically. Each movie includes numerous amounts nudity, sexual situations, with an even greater amount of profanity. According to one count, the final cut of American History X “includes 205 uses of the F-word, or about one use every 35 seconds” (Susman) while Gran Torino also uses foul language nearly 126 times (Asay). In American History X, Gran Tornio, and The Incredible Hulk, the view has a love hate relationship with each of the main characters. Each leading role portrays both the hero and villain of the movie, in all three examples the viewer grows to admire the hero even though they still hate the villain the main character sporadically becomes, but maybe this is why a majority of people respect and appreciate these characters.
While many critics admire Tony Kaye’s boldness, others believe that American History X was not effective and has gone too far in trying to teach a lesson in racism. Angeliki Coconi believes that “while offering this valuable American History lesson on screen, a number of racist crimes are committed, a series of racist remarks are made and plenty of disturbing narrow-mindedness becomes evident,” in other words the movie was far too severe.
