American Football, the History and Timeline of How the Sport was Developed Into the Modern-Day Sport America Knows and Loves
American Football has been one of the most popular spectator sports, however it hasn’t always been this way. On November 6th, 1869 the first game, that was intercollege, was played that incorporated the basic rules of the American football that we all know and love today. Players from Rutgers and Princeton played a game against each other and only one team was victorious in claiming the victory. It was Rutgers that had come in first in that game and would then continue to hold good standings in modern-day rankings. Walter Camp, without any plausible doubt, was and still is one of the most influential figures regarding

The rules also enforced that now all seven of the players of the game had to be on the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped. In nineteen twenty, the American Football Association was formed. Jim Thorpe in the American Football Association was made their first president. He was made president because of a conference that was held in nineteen twenty. Football has a significant impact on all our lives, doesn’t matter if you play it or if you even watch it. Its has an impact on us financially and socially. Football is one of if not the greatest traditions of sport in America. It teaches teamwork. Football is the ultimate team sport. This game symbolized the start of changing times in the US and would eventually start a fervor in the US that would bring to the table many unforetold modifications to not only the sport in and of itself, but also the culture around it and how it was looked upon and accepted. One of the first progressive altercations that football brought to the table was women bringing and having a heavy influence in the sport. Even when compared to the other biggest American sporting event baseball, football had a much bigger focus on the numbers of women in the stands thus allowing football to be able to bring to the table something that not many other sports, toughness with sexuality at the same time. Now a rough and tough “manly” game did not have to be only for the male but could also serve other purposes such as a date or a social get together where no one would ever get bored due to the fast pace of the game along with the never before seen mixture of both men and women all in one giant stadium. This sexuality helped ring in the age of women being looked at as more so objects of sex as well as helping to bring sports onto a sort of plain on which anyone could go and see and have a team to root for instead of them simply catering to men of respectable
This article “When Theodore Roosevelt Saved Football” by Bruce Watson is mainly to inform readers about how Theodore Roosevelt influenced and saved the once-endangered sport American football by making it safer. The author begins by comparing American football today to football in the past as deadly. The author states that in today’s American football it is known for causing fewer injuries and least lethal, however, during Roosevelt’s time the players sustained more injuries and deaths due to minimal protective equipment and momentum plays. Watson mentions Roosevelt’s proposal about the pros and cons of football at meetings with college coaches and athletic directors. The meetings were postponed due to football’s scrutiny of violence.
While Walter Camp, the father of American football we all know and love today was established. Before the 19th century “football” referred to many number of games played on foot. Each one of these games had different rules; same were played solely using your hands and were a running game. Yet others forbid the use of the hands and were kicking games. Many football historians place the games beginning in rugby which began in 1823, due to its many similarities. One of the legends is that football was invented when Englishmen playing rugby grew tired of not being able to use their hands, so they picked up the ball and ran. Then in an endeavor to enforce the rules another player tackled the man who picked up the ball. Although we didn’t aren’t sure if this is true we do know that a variation of English rugby was taking off in Canada which later became Canadian football. This is important because it had a huge influence on developing American football (Saperecom).

Football is an American sport that consists of two teams composed of 11 men. On the 100-yard field, they go head to head, trying to keep the other team from advancing the ball down the field toward the end zone, resulting in a touchdown or field goal. Football pits the two teams against each other. The offense, which possesses the ball, is placed against the defense, which tries to prevent the offense from advancing the ball. Several different resources can contribute to a team’s success. Some of those resources are funds, talent level of players, and favorable position on the field, which makes it easier to score points. The four sociological perspectives, structural functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, and social exchange theory, all credit different reasons for one team being able to achieve this goal more often than another team. Nevertheless, any of the sociological perspectives you view the sport from, football is a very complex entity. Football is more than just a group of men pounding one another. There is a complex equation that eventually equals success; the differences between these perspectives are the components of the equation that are most heavily weighed on for success. Although it may be a combination of all three perspectives that leads to success in football, it is fair to look at the game from each perspective individually because each holds important insight into what truly leads to a successful football team.
It all started in 1920 with the fourteen-league American Professional Football Association. The league broke into two competing rivals, the National Football League
In order to truly appreciate the overall beneficial influence football has had on American culture between the 1890’s and 1930’s, we cannot turn a blind eye to the negative obstacles football has overcome. In the early years of development, football was played similarly to rugby and universities played by different rules, making standardization within the sport a difficult task to accomplish. One of the major problems observed during the infancy of football was the sheer violence witnessed on the field. Mass play was the common play style during the first years of football in which the entire offensive force would focus on one spot of the defense; the offense was determined to go through the defense rather than go around them. The raw power behind these plays lead to serious injuries as well as the death of a player in the early 1900’s. This disastrous event deterred numerous universities from playing football out of fear of a repeat of events. Following more serious injuries
7 years after the game with Rutgers and Princeton, the Massasoit convention took place, and there, the first ever American football rules were written. Walter Camp, who would become known as the father of American football, first became involved with the game. Nothing of serious magnitude happened after this for quite a few years, but in 1892, which was an era in which football was a major attraction of local athletic clubs, a very intense competition took place between two Pittsburgh-area clubs, the Allegheny Athletic Association, or AAA, and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club, or PAC. And this game proved to be a very historic game. This game led to the first ever professional football player. Former Yale All-American guard
The 1920s were a starting foundation for football. The most popular league, the NFL, was formed in the 1920s. On September 17, the team met again, changing its name to APFA (American Professional Football Association). By 1923, the name was changed to the National Football League (NFL).
