According to the American Cancer Society deaths are decreasing since the 1990s but it will still kill around 565 thousand Americans per year. The Denver metro area has a population of 2.7 million people, that is 21% of the population of Denver that is killed by cancer each year.
The American Cancer Society informs us that 1.4 million new cancer cases are found each year, everyone knows someone that had or has cancer. Even today my grandfather is receiving chemotherapy to fight his lymphoma cancer. The problem with cancer is that there is no one way to avoid or defeat cancer. while many alterations have no effect on a person's health permanent changes in certain genes can lead to cancer." They don't claim that the environment causes cancer but they do claim it can contribute to developing cancer if someone is exposed to extended amounts of time to that environment. For example, smoking for a extended amount of time will mutate your cells in your lungs and these cells over time could turn into cancer. Exposure to the sun with no protective clothing over time will mutate your skin cells and could turn those cells into cancer. According to the NCI the older you are the higher risk you have of getting cancer, because of your continued exposure to the environment.
The NCI reports, "At least twothirds of the cases of cancer are caused by environmental factors. Many of these cancers are linked to lifestyle factors that can be modified, such as cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet, physical inactivity, and being overweight or obese." The paper Cancer and Environment, "Because of the complex interplay of many factors, it is not possible to predict whether a specific environmental exposure will cause a particular person to develop cancer. We know that certain genetic and environmental factors increase the risk of developing cancer, but we rarely know exactly which combination of factors is responsible for a person’s specific cancer. This also means that we usually don’t know why one person gets cancer and another does not." My grandfather had no family history of cancer and smoked his entire life. Most people would assume that he would get lung cancer but he was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer by his kidney. Why was this? The doctors could not tell us why he developed this type of cancer. "Scientists have identified more than 300 altered genes that can play a role in tumor development." These 300 altered genes could or could not change into cancer. The doctors have no way of determining which altered gene will cause cancer or do nothing. It is all random chance if you will be unlucky and get cancer but you can at least be educated to avoid and prepare for cancer.
