Article Summary: Understanding American Worldview In the article of “Understanding American Worldview,” written by J. La Vella Ingram, discusses about the different types of views and ideologies that are incorporated in America, which could potentially vary from another culture. For instance, some cultures base their lifestyle on the future by remaining productive in the present, instead of focusing on the past. Or, some cultures believe that we should have mastery over nature, and not the other way around, so we may keep advancing in certain fields.
There is a lot that goes into making this country work. Whether it be the coal that makes electricity to power our lights, to the cowboys who herd the cattle that becomes the beef that we eat regularly, there’s more to America than just big business. But we as Americans rarely think about these jobs, let alone respect them. Hidden America written by Jeanne Marie Laskas shines a light on these underappreciated jobs, and points out that these jobs are imperative to our economy, and deserve more respect than they receive.
To understand Eric Liu’s opinion on having a common culture in the U.S and purpose it is important to know about his cultural background and career. Liu’s parents were born in China but Liu was born in Poughkeepsie, New York. He studied history in Yale University then got his degree and graduated from Harvard Law School. Liu has accomplished many things over the past couple years. He is the CEO for citizen university, which has a main focus in teaching the arts of being a powerful citizen who is a someone that make an impact in the world to help others. Everyone should strive in being a powerful citizen. Liu is well prepared and intelligent writer, he wrote the article called “What Every American Should Know”. This specific article is about Liu 's thought and new ideas in having a common culture in 2015 towards Hirsh’s controversial book Cultural Literacy. Cultural Literacy is based on arguments about teaching common cultures on having a common vocabulary for students. Hirsch 's article had a big impact in his career and Cultural Literary became a National best seller. This article came out in a very controversial moment in America going through Cultural Literacy. Liu disagrees with Hirsh list and throughout the article Liu main purpose is to come up with a new list based on diversity and shared cultures. This list is important to me because I am an American that would love to be able to communicate to other culture other than my own. Liu has many strategies to get his
Can a murderer, or on a broader scale, someone who’s done something “morally” incorrect ever truly be redeemed of their wrong doings? In a world where people are often judged more harshly by others than they should be, this question arises. Granted, the law isn’t something that can be bent because it clearly states that citizens who break the rules will have repercussions to pay. However, when people who have completed their sentences try to assimilate back into the lives they were previously living, they find themselves stuck in between a rock and a hard place. With this being said, redemption seems to be only applicable to those who fit the stigma of what an “ideal American” is supposed to be. To elaborate, this means that if one doesn’t
Matthew Christopher Is a photographer that travels all over the world and takes pictures of abandoned building as crazy as this might sound his reasoning behind it is really quite amazing and something I would have never thought of. Matthew starts the talk by telling and showing pictures to the group about some of the places all over the world from china to the U.K and yes even the U.S.A. He then tells us that his second book just came out and this would be the only stop on the west coast he makes which I feel is a great experience for everyone that attended. We were also told of a website he has and post pictures and talks about he places he’s been it is called abandoned America and has been up and running for 10 years now.
If the title itself isn’t an obvious indicator that it is American backwards, there are several clues to this fact throughout the article. It starts off with a brief history of how the nation became the way it is, with “Notgnishaw,” cutting down the cherry tree. This idea of cutting down the tree seemed very familiar to me, and it should. I believe it represented Washington cutting down the tree, as well as the fact that “Notgnishaw,” is Washington spelled backwards. I found it interesting at first that many people, as well as myself did not realize that the words were backward; this idea gives readers the sense that this may be a tribe after all. After hinting they were talking about America, with the Washington statement, they provided
When I read Lupe's story I felt inspired because I sometimes hear people make comments like, 'Learn English! This is America!" and it sounds harsh. This story is an example of someone who essentially heard that message, but actually did it and it worked for her family. That struck a chord with me because I always thought it was rude to suggest someone learn English. I mean, we are a "melting pot" right? But Lupe's story changed my perspective.
The destructive nature of expressing ‘bad ignorance’ can be demonstrated in the clear opposition to the discovery of the microbiome, as exemplified in Ed Yong’s paper, I Contain Multitudes: The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life. By definition, the microbiome is the all-inclusive assortment of microbes that altruistically coexist with humanity and the environment. The concept of the microbiome is a result of the profound interest- or shall I dare say the persistent ignorance- of Antony van Leeuwenhoek (Yong 8). Although not a scientist by trade, Van Leeuwenhoek was determined to probe the unknown nature of microbes because of his own infinite desire to explore the enigmatic domain that was evidently the microbiome (Yong 11). Van
In Langston Hughes poem “Let America be America Again” he talks about how America should return to the way that it was perceived to be in the dreams before America was truly America. Throughout the poem he uses various methods to evoke the patriotic images and dreams that he feels America should and will eventually be. Hughes states that America is supposed to be a place of equality for everyone including both white and colored people. During this period in time though there was not equality for everyone. Hughes talks about an America where both whites and colored people will have equality in all aspects socially, politically, and economically. What Hughes is saying is that both whites and colored
In America Is In the Heart, writer Carlos Bulosan delivers a near autobiographical description of his life growing up in the Philippines post World War I and his disillusioned idea of the “American Dream”. Although this later proven disappointment was bolstered by family members and close friends, Carlos, or Allos as he is referred to in the book, never truly gives up his “American Dream” and instead burdens the responsibility to keep the image shiny and intact within a crooked America.
In my survey of the 25 international students, a lot of them had many words that explain America before they came here, which were, opportunity, technology, freedom and pride. Then when I asked them to give me their word that explain America since they have been here, they said, lazy, separated and structured. This proves that they came to the United States with a mindset which the media only showed them. For example, one of Lakeland College foreign exchange students by the name of Nathaniel Cooper said that the first thing he ever saw about America was New York. Well, in America New York is one the most attractive cities in the United States, from skyscrapers, to the colorful Time Square.
How can I be faithful to something that I do not adore . how can I adore something that is a joke.
In my thoughts United States is a unique country. Because, it built by the immigrants who came here for better opportunity, beautiful life and great dreams. United States reminds me small world because lot of people from each part of the world live here. That makes United States different and interesting country in my mind. Culture is something which explains people’s life style, interest, history and values. So, every emigrant brought some new perspective in the United State. We are able to find some cultural piece from every part of the world. Because of, the dreams every person brought some perspective which makes them hard working and seeking for new opportunities. So, United State is the representative of diversity, new built culture, individualism and direct also outspoken place where your dream could be true.
my 5th grade teacher was always very strict and “mean” at the time. Yet, still she would want to
Her class of teachers take their jobs very seriously, and do not tolerate students who skip or disrupt their classes. These teachers are fun, because once you get them off on some irrelevant tangent, they will keep themselves going on it for entire class segments, trying to get out years of thought and consideration in just a short period of time. This is how I got to know my psychology teacher, because I was the one who kept her talking, so that the class could avoid taking the quiz that none of us had studied for. Teachers like her have the innate gift to educate and entertain, with their comprehensive lessons and subtle quirks.
