“You don’t know how important donating blood is until you’re sick.” That’s what Alyssa Gomez tells people and she knows it’s true. In the fall of 2004, Alyssa was diagnosed with leukemia and her treatment requires that she receive both whole blood and platelets. Donating blood only takes moments of someone’s time, so everyone capable should make time to donate because it saves lives, gives back to the community, and it even can help one’s self. A hero is somebody who is selfless, who is generous in spirit, who just tries to give back as much as possible and help people. When you donate blood you become a hero. By just donating 1 pint of blood you can save a car accident victim a burn patient and a cancer patient. That’s three lives saved because you gave just one pint of blood. Donating blood improves cardiovascular health. Reducing heart attacks can be solved by reducing your blood viscosity, which is how thick and sticky your blood is. It’s caused by too much iron building up in the arties. Men are at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease than women. There are studies that show that out of 3,000 men 88% of the ones who donated blood had less risk of a heart attack by 50% then those who didn’t donate at all. Also when you go to donate blood it’s like getting a free mini check-up. They check your blood pressure, heart rate, temperature and iron levels. In conclusion, there are many reason why donating blood is something everyone. In the United States an average of 40,000 units of blood are needed every day. Around 60% of population will need blood at some time in their lives, yet only around 5% of the population will actually donate blood. If all eligible donors will donate on a regular basis, which I six to four times a year, all blood needs would be meet and blood shortages would be a thing of the
