Alton Brown is commonly known for being the host of the food network shows “Good Eats” and “cutthroat kitchen”. Born July 30th, 1962 in Los Angeles, California, Alton Brown has inspired a generation of young cooks, both professionally and household. As a young adult Brown spent most of his time working in cinematography but found that he spent a majority of his time between shoots watching cooking showed that he found boring and uninformed. Convinced he could do better, he graduates from the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, Vermont, and creates the show “Good Eats” and entertaining and informative cooking show for everyone from children helping mom and dad in the kitchen to individuals well into their 40s with absolutely no cooking

Well prepared food is exactly what she creates. Mandley takes a holistic approach to food preparation. She not only chooses her ingredients based on taste and compatibility, but also based on benefits they provide to the body. It’s more than a meal, she prepares an experience.
Regardless the person, everyone still orders from restaurants, or they microwave a frozen dinner meal once in awhile. In contemporary society, it 's much more efficient to order take out rather than to cook and prepare your own food due to the lack of time. Sadly people even forget the taste of fresh, home cooked meals. Nowadays people don’t know what it’s like to sit down and enjoy a nice hearty home cooked meal, instead they’re always on the run grabbing a quick bite here and there. Unfortunately with such busy lives people don’t have the opportunity to watch cooking shows, go to cooking class, or even cook for their children. People just want to come home and relax they don’t want to have to worry about cooking and all the preparation that comes with it, they would much rather order take out and avoid all the hassle of cooking. In Berry Wendell’s Essay “The Pleasures of Eating”, we are given insight on how very little common people know about where their food comes from and what it goes through. “When a Crop Becomes King” by Michael Pollan reveals how corn, a single crop could be involved in such a wide array of industry and be used in almost everything. David Barboza’s article “If You Pitch It, They Will Eat”, focuses on how in modern society advertising is everywhere and it is taking a big role in everyday life. Through the work of Berry, Pollan, and Barboza we are shown that ignorance is a defining human trait.
In the book Food :A Love Story it isn’t hard to guess what parts of Jim Gaffigan’s life was used. Claiming that food is a very big and important part of his life. He justifies why he made an autobiography about his life with food. He had stated that “As a result of constant eating, I’m not thin. Sure my beard hides none of it, but at least I know why I’m not thin.”(Jim Gaffigan, 12) he also believes that because of his physique he is way more trustworthy in the food genre of life then compared to a skinny person. In this book he makes and abundance of really out there and hilarious jokes about food and topics around it. One of his better ones is the character known as the Fattelier. His definition for this name is a bigger/fatter food advisor who doesn’t advise the more expensive but instead the more fattening.
The essay “Eat Food: Food Defined,” from Michael Pollan’s 2008 book In Defense of Food was written to address the American general public about the food industry. Pollan focuses on relatable topics as examples, such as family, common food items, and common belief that everyone wants to be healthy. The essay brings across Pollan’s point by establishing his credibility, explaining why this is important to us, and telling us how to react to the given facts. Pollan makes the readers inquire how we define food by drawing our attention to the importance of examining our food before eating it.
My show of choice was Good Eats. Specifically, the third episode of season 2. It began with an indirect introduction of what the food of choice would be, assuming that you hadn’t already read the title. It showed kids creating a distraction so that they could steal their parents’ waffles. I thought this was very clever and an interesting way to start the show. However, about 2 minutes later the host, Alton Brown, came on screen. Dressed as a waffle super hero, he destroyed bland and poorly made waffles in the kitchen. The show then went on to include a nun and a snippet of both the host and the nun eating ice cream in Paris. All of this was done to give some background information on the waffle and where and how it originated. Although I understand
“The solution, in his view, is to replace Big Food’s engineered, edible evil—through public education and regulation—with fresh, unprocessed, local, seasonal, real food.” (Freedman). Pollan has increased spite for “nutritionism,” which is the idea behind packing healthier ingredients into processed foods which is what Freedman is advocating for. Pollan’s view is much the same as some scientists, food activists, nutritionists, and celebrity chefs. He has had such an influence that the Silicon Valley caters to the wholefoods movement and the progression to familiarizing the masses with simpler eating habits (Freedman). However, being an area full of technological endeavors, the Silicon Valley sees technology as the culprit as well. The New York Times Magazine’s food writer, Mark Bittman also shares views with Pollan. In fact, Bittman has even written a cookbook on how to eat better. While most are more wholesome there are still few recipes that are high in fat. One of his recipes consists of corn being sautéed in bacon fat and then topped with bacon (Freedman).
The series consistently brings up our primal need to cook, while trying to entice us back into the kitchen with beautiful cinematography, personal stories about people, and the cultural impact of the things we take for granted. There 's no doubt that Cooked is a passion project, with a strong message, however, there are many inconsistencies with the argument they present. These inconsistencies mostly revolve around a failure to negate questions of how to achieve their idealist viewpoints, cherry picking scientific evidence, and simultaneously trying to dismantle food industry fuckery while supporting a fallacy.

Thinking about the importance and significance of food respective to our health, ethnic culture and society can cause cavernous, profound, and even questionable thoughts such as: “Is food taken for granted?”, “Is specialty foods just a fad or a change in lifestyle?”, and even “Is food becoming the enemy.” Mark Bittman, an established food journalist, wrote an article called “Why take food seriously?” In this article, Bittman enlightens the reader with a brief history lesson of America’s appreciation of food over the past decades. I. “The way we eat has changed more in the last 50 years than in the previous 10,000.” Food activist, Michael Pollan, makes this statement as the introduction to a documentary titled Food Inc., which discusses the way food is being produced today in America.
Many people inspired me to become a chef based off of food network shows I’ve watched over the years and continue to watch till this day. There are many names to name but I will only name a few of those people. One chef in particular I received my inspiration from to become a chef is Bobby Flay. Bobby inspires me every day with his work ethic that he shows as a chef to create dishes in his many busy restaurant’s that he has across the globe. I already had a great work ethic but Bobby improved more for me so I can become a better person and a better chef with the hard work it takes to run a business. He also shows ways in cooking everyday things in many unique ways that other chefs cannot do. That showed me that no matter what everyone else
