Alternative rap versus southern rap The genre of hip hop has been around since the 1970s. Bronx, NY is the home of hip hop, and ever since rap left New York it has changed in many ways. A popular subgenre of hip hop is southern rap. Southern rap is rap music usually coming out of the southern United States. There has been many Southern states to have popularity in rap like Texas, Georgia, Louisiana and Florida. Alternative rap is another subgenre of hip hop it came into prominence in the 1990s. The best subgenre is southern rap it has a nice sound to it, and it goes beyond the music. Southern rap has a much faster pace, and has a lot more bass. Sometimes rap can be very materialistic, and avoid social issues going on. A lot of southern
Hip hop, the creation of electronic sound and enticing language is a style born from the African American and Hispanic cultures. It formed in New York City from block parties and the participation of the youth culture. This style of music began as a minimal change in rhythm to a globally popular culture consisting of graffiti art, dancing, and music. Hip hop was not only a type of tasteful music, but it also became a benchmark in history. When this style of music was created, it served as an outlet for those who did not have a voice, particularly the minority groups. These groups were given rights that they deserved just like everyone else. In the 1970’s is when hip hop began to spread, creating not just
One must first understand the history between rappers and hillbillies, if they are to understand the hatred that burns between them. The rapper kingdom CompHarlcagolynOak and the Hillbilly kingdom of Louisiana Fresh (brought to you by KFC) were once the greatest of allies. It all fell apart when the great rapper King Jay B and his heir to the throne, his son Prince Sanjai East, created the royal King and Prince mixtape Hot Fire. In this mixtape they mentioned the Hillbillies. But this is where the problem arose. They called them by the greatest slur towards Hillbillies, the word Southerners. This was meant to be a light jab, but it was the greatest of insults. The King of Louisiana Fresh, Bubba-Ray Burlaps,
Everyone would say Country is the purist of all music genres but if we take a closer look at the lyrics of the popular songs, is it like rap in the long run. From Keith Pounds song “She wore a Red Dress” which is all about a hunting down a girl and getting in a huge fight and killing her. Most country songs have the darkest of meanings. Instead of criticizing them we tap our toes to the beat of the music and it becomes the most listened to song on the radio. What is better for kids to listen to rap or country?
With the release of the single “Accidental Racist,” by Brad Paisley and LL Cool J, the lines between rap music and country music officially blurred beyond recognition. Fans of country and rap music downloaded and purchased the single to see how two completely different genres would blend. Billboard statistics show that most fans appreciated Paisley and Smith’s efforts. Yet hardcore country and hip-hop fans insist that the genres are so different on the musical spectrum that no similarities could ever exist. However, current popular music is proving this to be untrue to a certain extent. While rap and country music have many similarities, they differ in terms of lyrical content, use of musical elements, and target audience.
Hip hop/ Rap and Country both portray a very strong meaning behind their lyrical content, as they express life stories throughout their lyrics. Although, Hip hop/rap is much more aggressive, majority of rappers compose about drugs, or about how somebody they are close to has been raped or shot, or even someone that they themselves have shot. As for country singers sing about how all they have done lately is drink or get into a fight at a local bar over a specific girl. In majority of the music that (mainly) rap artist have produced lately, you can notice the increase in vulgarity and disturbed behaviors. While country is seemingly more depressing.
One big difference between rap and country music is the audience. Usually when a rap concert begins, the audience arrives minutes before it starts. There is no party before or get together. Rap music appeals to a younger audience. Rap is popular among many teenagers and young adults. There usually aren’t many older people that listen to rap music or would attend a rap concert. Rap usually attracts an audience made up of many races. The audience consists of whites, African Americans, Hispanics, and many other races. It is not targeted to one race over the others. Country concerts are known for having tailgate parties hours before the concert begins. People get together and will barbeque, listen to music, eat, and drink. They have a good time before the concerts starts
Hip-hop culture began to develop in the south Bronx area of New York City during the 1970s. It had a significant influence in the music industry. Hip-hop music generally includes rapping, but other elements such as sampling and beatboxing also play important roles. Rapping, as a key part in the hip-hop music, takes different forms, which including signifying, dozen, toast and jazz poetry. Initially, hip-hop music was a voice of people living in low-income areas, reflecting social, economic and political phenomenon in their life [1]. As time moves on, hip-hop music reached its “golden age”, where it became a mainstream music, featuring diversity, quality, innovation and influence [2]. Gangsta rap, one of the most significant innovations in
Hip-Hop and rap resurfaced in the Bronx, in the 70’s, around this time people in Bronx were going through, poverty, unemployment, increased crime, etc. Which caused them to have freedom of expression through rhyming; creating the meaning rap. Although the meaning of the word “Rap” original meant to strike or blow. Which in my opinion fits perfectly because they are striking mentally with words instead of physically. This genre is basically a form of
If there's one sub-genre of hip-hop that I'm not privy too, then it would definitely be horrorcore. Horrorcore, formed in the early 90s, saw rappers bring up horror-themed subject matter in their rhymes, often discussing topics such as serial killing and satan worship. I often find horrorcore rappers to be gimmicky, and reliant on cheap shocks rather than lyrical prowess (Insane Clown Posse has become a definitive act for the genre for these reasons). That said though, the genre certainly has an important place in hip-hop history, and in many ways bridges the gap between late 80s gangsta rap, with hardcore artists of the late 90s. With the success of gangsta rappers like N.W.A. and The Geto Boys, combined with the fact
Hip-Hop is a complex cultural movement formed during the early 1970s by African Americans in the slums of South Bronx, New York (Dyson 6), it propagated outside of the African American community in late 1980s, and by the opening of the 21th century it became the most spread culture in the world. Hip-Hop consists of four elements: Deejay, Break-Dancing, Rapping, and Graffiti. (Kenon 112)
Hip hop music originated in the Bronx of New York City over 45 years ago in the 70's. It was brought over by immigrants from Jamaica. Shortly after, it was adopted by African Americans living in the Bronx and quickly spread to other African American urban communities around the country. At first, it was a low key thing. People would host block parties and freestyle battles among themselves, it became labeled as "hip-hop". "Hip-Hop Culture", it states "By the 1980's, the music begun to receive some airplay on commercial radio stations in the U.S, largely due to catchy songs such as "Rapper's Delight" by Sugarhill Gang."(p.2) Most of these stations were broadcast in urban radio stations were targeted towards African American audiences, but it
Hip-Hop culture is often confused with the Hip-Hop genre. Hip-Hop as a culture is more than just the music, it is a way of life. Hip-Hop music as a genre has changed from being Rap to including Pop. Hip-Hop is an evolving culture, constantly changing as the older generation fades and the newer generation carries on the legacy along with incorporating it's new style. The new generation of Hip-Hop or rather Hip-Hop today focuses more on Partying, music, and Swag rather than the original elements: Deejaying, Emceeing, Graffiti, and B-Boy or break dancing. These elements are still seen in today's Hip-Hop but have adapted a new style.
The most popular and influential form of African-American pop music of the 1980's and 1990's, rap is also one of the most controversial styles of the rock era. And not just among the guardians of cultural taste and purity that have always been counted among rock 'n' roll's chief enemies--Black, White, rock and soul audiences continue to fiercely debate the musical and social merits of rap, whose most radical innovations subverted many of the musical and cultural tenets upon which rock was built. Antecedents of rap are easy to find in rock with other kinds of music. Music is often used to tell a story, often with spoken rhymes over instruments and rhythms. Talking blues, spoken passages of sanctified prose in gospel,
R&B and hip-hop share a great deal in common, many hip-hop songs use samples from R&B recordings as their foundation. R&B and Hip-hop share root in African-American religious musical and community. So, people might not put hip-hop and R&B songs in the same sentence, but those people are wrong. Usher Raymond IV is an American singer, songwriter that can-do R&B on one album then on another album he can have people that are the Hip-Hop artist on the track and make it to a hip-hop album, you just must have the talent to know how to do both. The quality of the music depends on the type of artist. With hip-hop artists, they tend to speak on things that have impacted them in their
Hip hop music developed from party DJ's mixing and remixing popular music that was already out. This music was usually from the funk, soul and disco genre. It began during the 1970's in the Bronx in New York City and very popular among African Americans. Spoken hip hop music is
