The hunger for power, world domination, lust, or the greed for money has all been driven by a single individual’s wants. Washington Irving understood that this world is a fallen nation, apart from God’s righteousness. Like many great authors, Irving understood the fallen nature of people and how only the light of Christ could heal the broken hearted. In the analysis of “The Devil and Tom Walker” one can see that Irving makes biblical allusions to parables of greed spoken by Jesus. Irving was born in a puritan era, where the individuals living in that time period where frightened by powers of evil. Tom’s life shows that you cannot serve two masters either of greed, or of the Lord. In the short story it says, “ In a word, Tom’s zeal became as notorious as his riches” (Irving 13). Before this point in the story, Irving brings this point up to show how people put on masks to cover up the true identity of their character. Tom’s Christian zeal is seen as equal to his zeal for riches. It seems as though Irving combines these two, to show the internal conflict of flesh verses spirit. Irving writes in spite of scripture, the verse in mind is, “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and Money” (Matthew 6:24). The biblical allusion Irving uses with this parable about Jesus is personified with Tom’s actions. Jesus says you cannot serve God and money. Irving shows that Tom looked like a Christian at church but when it came to matters of money outside of church he would steal from people to make them dry as a sponge. Irving expresses the importance of knowing that there is a clear line of being single minded and serving one master.
