Different people have different definitions for normal and abnormal behaviors. However, whether conscious or not, these definitions have something in common. From Allan V. Horwitz’s book “What’s Normal”, he defines normal and abnormal from three aspects, which are statistical, cultural and evolutionary. By searching statistical data, we can find what the majority people do cause “statistical normality is a property of groups, not individuals” (Horwitz 2008:70). When we talk about cultural normality, we should be attention that it is a relative concept since “culture belongs to particular group rather than universal” (Horwitz 2008:71). Finally, from evolutionary perspective, “normality is defined by characteristics that result from natural selection” …show more content…
In most of the cultures, people tend to date first and then consider a marriage. It takes time for potential problems to emerge. The two will not know how to deal with each other’s quirks that may not have been evident before. It is necessary to date first because it takes time to know the personalities, financial conditions, hobbies, physical condition, and background of your mate. Thereby, marry to fast may also lead to divorce too …show more content…
Or, we may take a longer time to find our soul mate. Even in the natural world, male animals typically performing elaborate dances to display their health and skill to attract females. So if people are too shy to get in touch with others and are afraid to take actions, then they will miss opportunities to attract their potential mates’ attention. Beside that, large social distance means to it is hard to ask for help from others. If something bad happens while everyone stands really far away, relying only on oneself is less likely to survive. So, large social space is abnormal in evolutionary perspective.
It is not possible for a person to be normal on everything, and we all have something that may differ from others. By viewing any behaviors from statistical, cultural and evolutionary views, one can be more confident in defining that behavior to be normal or not. Generally, if a behavior is a minority in statistical data, cannot explained by culture, and obey natural selection, we can say such behavior is
or better yet,” What is the concept of being normal?” The truth is there is no way to be “normal”. As a matter of fact, normality is the state of being “the usual” or expected. It is based upon geographical locations, time, people, etc. With that being said, whatever is normal in your eyes may be strictly abnormal in another’s eyes.
A “normal person” can be considered many different things, depending on the viewpoint of the person. Often times one would consider a “normal person” to be a person without any sort of mental illness. A normal person is someone who adapts to the norms and standards of society.
Millions of people varying in color, religion, sex, sexual preferences, and socioeconomic status share the earth that we live on. Somehow within all that variation people think that they are able to interpret and label what is normal and abnormal. How many are considered “normal” and why? Is the child born with 6 fingers on one hand instead of 5 any less normal then the 5 fingered child? Why is preferring to sit in the dark and go on long meandering walks enough to have you labeled unfit to raise children as Sylvie was in the movie Housekeeping? Webster’s dictionary defines normal as the ability to conform to a particular standard or desired pattern. People who abide by the laws and social norms are normal, and those who don’t are abnormal.
When using this approach to define abnormality you would first have to consider what is normal behaviour for that particular culture otherwise a person could be incorrectly diagnosed as abnormal. Cultural differences are also a problem for the 'Failure to Function Adequately' definition of abnormality. This classification of abnormality involves a person who conforms to their 7 characteristics of the abnormal as having ill mental health. Examples of these characteristics are vividness, unconventionality and observer discomfort.
The term ‘abnormal’ means deviating from the average. Therefore, if we were to adopt a literal approach to defining abnormality, we would conclude that any rare behaviour or ability was abnormal. This, however, is not a useful way of defining abnormality as it doesn’t take into account whether or not the behaviour is desirable. There are three ways of defining abnormality; deviation from

What is normal? Normal, like the word love, has no true definition and will differ with every person you ask. Defined in the dictionary normal is “to conform to a particular standard” or “desired pattern”. I believe most people will say a normal person is one whom is free from defect, handicap and mental illness. Medicalization is a social process through which a previously normal human condition whether is be behavioral, physiological or emotional, becomes a medical problem in need of treatment. For example, not long ago being a shy person, “being reserved or having or showing nervousness or timidity in the company of other people”, was common and something most people experienced at some points in their lives. However, now shyness
In all aspects of the lives we live, normal can not ever be defined as a single idea. If normal is such a thing at all, it is a subjective opinion and can only be defined on an individual level. Everything we interpret is relative to our upbringing and our environment. Not one person had the same upbringing or lived in the same environment as another person for even siblings who have lived together their whole lives have different nurturing experiences. The differentiation between normal and abnormal is a topic of much debate. The meaning of normality varies in many ways such as by person, time, place, situation, culture and set of values. Normality is usually seen as good and desirable by society and what society thinks while abnormality may be seen as bad or undesirable (Boundless).
1.2 Evaluation of the medical model and psychodynamic model to abnormal psychology. There are many different ways to define abnormality in psychology, this essay will outline and evaluate the main ideas, therapies and influence that both the medical model and psychodynamic model have had in the research of defining psychological abnormality. Freud (1994) is one of the biggest influences in psychoanalytic psychology. He believes that the root of mental distress can be found in childhood trauma and conflicts that have been locked away in the unconscious mind.
Marvin is feeling so depressed that he is having trouble making it to work and
Abnormality may be defined as behavior that causes distress, loss of freedom, physical or emotional pain, and increased risk of death or injury to self or something that causes a disability of some sort. Abnormal behaviour is however difficult to diagnose because it is, to a large extent, based on the symptoms people exhibit. Psychiatrists and psychologists use a standardized system called a diagnostic manual to help them but this system isn’t without faults. Since there is no clear definition of normality or abnormality – and symptoms of the same psychological disorders may vary not only between individuals but also between social and cultural groups, it is clear that a
According to the science of psychology one’s behavior needs to follow a certain criteria in order to be deemed “normal”. If one’s behavior does not match the criteria, their behavior is seen as undesirable and wrong (requires change). For this physiologists need to be able to view a person’s behavior and be able to tell the difference between normal and abnormal. Whilst defining the “normality” of ones behavior physiologists need to be careful to remain objective and as free of any bias as possible, furthermore their experiment to determine ones behavior needs to be repeatable and reliable.
Abnormal behavior relates to the influence of psychological factors, biological factors as well as the social factors referring to inadequate relationships. In the face of diverse definition, abnormal behavior refers to the deviating from norm, which norm is the typical behavior or characteristic of the population. As such, Jim behavior is abnormal because it violates moral and conventional mores of the society (Violates societal standards), as such causing social discomfort to others. For instance, Jim fails to recognize the social cues in conversation thereby annoying other interlocutors. Jim is this case is behaving in a manner counterproductive to his own well being by
For many years scientists, including doctors, psychologists, and psychiatrists, have been interested in trying to understand human behaviour, in particular behaviour that is described as being ‘abnormal’. It is difficult to define ‘abnormal’ in terms of behaviour because there are many differing descriptions which have radically changed over the years. ‘Abnormal’ behaviour is widely categorised as being persistent and in a serious degree contrary to the continued wellbeing of the individual and/or the surrounding community. Cultural beliefs and expectations determine which behaviour patterns are deemed as being ‘abnormal’.
Abnormal behavior was once viewed as an embarrassment to society. Those who suffered from a mental illness or displayed abnormal behavior were locked away and never spoken of. Today abnormal behavior is viewed much differently. With the study of psychology and the help of the medical field, abnormal behavior has become better understood. This essay will discuss the major theories for the cause of abnormal behavior, how abnormal behavior is diagnosed and what type of behavioral issues are related to abnormal behavior.
