In conclusion, while Christine Flowers is right about diverse benefits of single-sex education, she is far too biased against coed education. With an appropriate and positive attitude towards the opposite sex, attending a coed school is actually, in many ways, more beneficial than going to a single-sex school. Indeed, an environment in which there are both males and females offers the students a wonderful chance to get along with people of the opposite sex, share ideas about academics and life, and thus improve both academic and social skills.

In contemporary United States culture, the most exigent social justice issue facing our country is violence towards women, specifically the classic mantra “boys will boys”. Despite it being a seemingly innocuous phrase, I and others attribute this banal vernacular as being one of the early stages of developing acts of abuse towards the female gender. This mantra so to speak, normalizes the unknowingly sexist actions of boys. This idea ingrains into the minds of young children that aggressive behavior is to not only be excused, but to be expected, because it is “just in their nature”. Furthermore, on the 1st October, the Apprentice Boys of Derry announced their intention to march the same route on the same day and time. William Craig, the Northern Ireland Home Affairs Minister, banned both the civil rights march and the Apprentice Boys' march on police advice in the hope of avoiding serious disorder. Craig claimed that he was not against freedom of expression but that it should not be done in areas where it likely to cause provocation, especially as he saw NICRA as "a republican-nationalist organisation" (Scott: 1996). The marchers decided to ignore the ban and were stopped by the Royal Ulster Constabulary before it had properly begun. After several marchers were hit by police batons, with Gerry Fitt being hospitalised, the marchers sat down and gave short speeches. This was followed by some retaliation from the marchers who hurdled stones and placards at the police, the police eventually moved in with batons chasing and hitting those who fell by the wayside. Some demonstrators had managed to filter into the Diamond in small groups, however this saw the arrival of a large crowd of angry Catholic youths who had not participated in the march but who then provoked the police. Having forced the youths back down to the Bogside with baton-charges, a stone-throwing confrontation took place between Catholics and police. Having pushed the police back to the Diamond, the fighting continued and the next day petrol bombs where thrown and shops looted.

Being in a school with guys only would be much better in my opinion. Life as a regular guy in school would be 100x better because you wont have to worry about appearance, in addition you wont have to feel the need to be pleasing anyone when you come to school.

Another reason I think that single-gender schools are good is that the girls wont be afraid to take classes that are normely classes boys take or girl classes with boys.The boys can take what is called girl classes and the same with girls because they don't have to worry about the opposite gender making fun of them.

Lastly, students who go to single-gender schools do not have any academic advantages over children who attend co-ed schools. In “Co-Ed Schools are Here to Stay” the text states,”After looking at 184 studies, the researchers failed to find significant advantages of single-gender schooling for either boys or girls.” This shows that students at co-ed schools do just as well academically as students at single-gender schools. Knowing this information, there is no reason to send your child to a single-gender school when there is no advantages in you child’s school life or life as an adult.

Boys and girls learn in two different ways. This reason is why having a single sex school is more rewarding than a co-ed school. Many boys won’t show interest in music in a co-ed school. When boys are placed in a single sex school they won’t have the feeling of impressing girls so more boys will show their interest in arts and music.
