On average the Alka Seltzer tablet dissolved faster in hot water in comparison to ice cold water and room temperature water. The beaker with ice cold water caused the Alka Seltzer tablet to dissolve the slowest. The three beakers containing different temperatures of water, all produced carbon dioxide bubbles; however, the beaker containing hot water produced the bubbles more rapidly.

As the temperature of the water increases, it causes the H2O particles to move and vibrate more rapidly. As a result, the faster moving particles collide more perpetually with the bicarbonate within the Alka Seltzer tablet causing it to dissolve at a higher rate; in comparison to the room temperature and ice cold beakers of water. Hot water dissolved the tablet faster as it increased the chances of the bicarbonate ion perfectly colliding with the hydrogen particles, as there was more movement.

The results collected based on this experiment were to some degree surprising. I was surprised about the length of time it took for the beaker containing the cold water and Alka Seltzer tablet to dissolve. I predicted it would dissolve the slowest, however taking less time than it actually did, 2 minutes 43 seconds. I didn’t think it would take longer than 2 minutes for the Alka Seltzer tablet to dissolve. I wasn’t however surprised that the beaker containing hot water dissolved the tablet the fastest, as I had learnt that an increase in temperature increased the rate of

The limiting reactant will affect the amount of the product that can be made. Another reason why the starting reactants must be determined carefully is to make reduce the amount of the reactant in excess so that reactants are not wasted. This experiment uses an Alka-Seltzer tablet. Alka-Seltzer dissolves in water and is an antacid and a pain reliever1. The Alka-Seltzer tablet has many uses such as relief of headaches, ingestion, heart burns, or even upset stomachs2. The active ingredients in an Alka-Seltzer tablet is aspirin, also known as acetyl-salicylic acid (C8H12O4), citric acid (C6H8O7), and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3)2. The aspirin in the Alka-Seltzer tablet helps with pain relief. Because of the acid-base chemistry (Brønsted-Lowry), citric acid and sodium bicarbonate produce O2, which makes the tablet fizz when it is dropped in liquid. The Brønsted-Lowry theory shows how the Brønsted-Lowry acid donates a hydrogen ion while the Brønsted-Lowry base accepts the hydrogen ions3. For example, if you have a stomachache or some indigestion problems, Alka Seltzer may help neutralize the stomach acidity. Not only that, Alka Seltzer is also used for cleaning household items, such as vases or jewelry. Alka Seltzer contains citric acid and sodium bicarbonate, which makes it dissolve and release carbon dioxide gas when dropped in water. In this experiment, my lab partner, Rebecca, and I are trying to find a way to make Alka Seltzer dissolve faster in water. Rebecca and I both decide that if we increase the temperature of the water or make the water hotter, then the Alka Seltzer will dissolve faster because I know when salt and sugar dissolve in hot water, they dissolve faster. I predict that this same result would apply to this experiment.

On Thursday August 27, 2015 my group comprised of Elizabeth Cruz, Samantha St. Martin and I initiated experiment. This was constructed of three Alka-Seltzer tablets and three beakers containing different liquids: water, salt water, and vinegar. The drive behind our experiment was to see what factors would make the Alka-Seltzer tablets dissolve faster. My group’s hypothesis was that the strong chemical compounds in vinegar will cause the Alka-Seltzer to dissolve faster and therefore take the shortest amount of time compared to the other mixtures.

Some types of other solutions are things like sugar dissolved in water, saltwater, and rubbing alcohol.
Alka-seltzer Lab Report Statement of the Problem: The question of this lab was to find the optimum amount of Alka-Seltzer and water to achieve the highest launch possible. As Alka-Seltzer can dissolve in H2O and release CO2g (carbon dioxide gas), the gas is trapped inside the container and starts to gain pressure. This is the combination produces Sodium Bicarbonate which releases CO2g and other products. When the pressure in the container reaches maximum pressure, the lid will pop off releasing the gas and making it fly upwards.
