The January 29, 2017 shooting in a Quebec mosque was a form a hate crime early in the year. Alexandre Bissonnette acted as a “lone wolf” in entering the mosque and opening fire upon its patrons. Bissonnette killed 6 and injured multiple others in the church. As a result of the attack, Bissonnette is being charged with six counts of first-degree murder and five attempted murder charges. The attack is being considered an act of terrorism and a hate crime due to Bissonnette’s specific targeting of the Islamic people in the mosque. Witnesses claimed that he fired blindly into a crowd of worshipers containing men, women and children. A married couple by the name of Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashleen Malik opened fire at a holiday party on December 2, 2015, at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino. During this shooting spree, 14 people were killed, and 22 were injured with a majority being county employees and were friends and colleges’. It was approximately 11 a.m. when the couple entered the Inland Regional Center and opened fire. They opened fire in the employee banquet area where Mr. Farook had been earlier as he attended a work holiday party. It was reported that Mr. Farook had left angered after getting into a disagreement with a fellow coworker. Quickly after the shooting they escaped into a black SUV leaving behind three pipe bombs that did not detonate. The televised chase ended in an intense shootout that led to a full muti-agency response, to include the use of MRAPs and it was also reported that 23 officers fired over 380 rounds (Helton, 2015). Ultimately, the shootout resulted in the death of both Rizwan Farook and Tashleen Malik.

The most recent terrorist attack in Canada occurred on October 22nd, 2014. In Ottawa at the National War Memorial Nathan Cirillo a corporal was shot and killed. Shortly there after shots were fired in the Parliament building, the gunman was eventually killed by the Sargent At Arms. This is the first attack of its kind to occur in Canada.
