The book The Alchemist unfolds a story involving a hero's journey, encouraging people to avoid an uneventful life and pursue their dreams. When Santiago returned to Spain, he attended the church where he had first started. Santiago thought, "If he hadn't believed in the significance of recurrent dreams, he would not have met the Gypsy woman, the king, the thief, etc." Coelho 169. If Santiago hadn't met everyone who helped him, he wouldn't have stood in the church where it started. Santiago began to dig up his treasure, and later, "he had before him a chest of Spanish gold coins" (Coelho 170). The treasure he had been looking for all this time was right before him. As Santiago finds all his treasure, he realizes that he needs to experience everything he has been through on his journey before he finds his treasure. Santiago understands that if he hadn't made that one choice to follow his dreams, he would have never discovered his treasure or experienced what he had been through. The Alchemist tells a story about Santiago's hero's journey, highlighting the life-changing benefits of fulfilling his dreams.
