What is there more exciting than a close fast paced hockey game? Nothing except……. When that game is the battle of Alberta. The two teams are pacific division rivals, making the game even more exciting as they fight for a spot in the playoffs (Calgary 2016). Both of the teams have come a long way in the past couple of years. Both of them went from teams in rebuilding mode to serious contenders. But who has the edge on the other? Who is the better team going into the next season, the Calgary Flames, or the Edmonton Oilers? The Edmonton Oilers are better because of their management, goalies, forwards, and defence. Smith has only been to the playoffs twice and has won nine playoff games in both those times combined (Mail 2017). His backup Eddie Lack, is 29 years old and has played 136 NHL games (Herald 2017). The hope is that Lack can play up to thirty games this year (Herald 2017). That would give the team a decent goalie pairing. The Edmonton Oilers goalies are Cam Talbot and Laurent Brossoit. Cam Talbot joined the Oilers on June 27 2015. He played a bunch of games the next year, but the past year was when he really lit it up. He started the most games of any goalie (72) and won the most ever in franchise history with 42. He led the Oilers to the second round of the playoffs where they lost to the Ducks in 7 games. When they left the playoffs, he was leading the goalies with the most shutouts having three of them. There back up is Laurent Brossoit. He was traded to the Oilers from the Flames on November 8 2013 (Sbnation 2017). He has played 14 games in the NHL, starting 10 of them, and winning 4 of those starts (Sbnation 2017). So over all he is a young but capable NHL goalie. The Flames have a decent group of forwards. They have young stars like Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Matthew Tkachuk, and Curtis Lazar (Chirp 2017). With those young players they have a good group of veterans with Michael Ferland, Troy Brouwer, and Kris Versteeg (Chirp 2017). This is a average group of forwards in the NHL.
