“Everyone has a right to their own opinion”, a fairly famous quote both true for celebrities and ordinary citizens alike. When there’s a topic getting a lot of attention from the main media outlets, celebrities are asked for their opinion on where they stand on the topic. Yet, whether they are asked to give a statement or not, they are still allowed to have the right to do so. No matter how large or small your influence is in society, your voice shouldn’t be hushed away because it wasn't as agreeable as the others. Influence is power, and it can best show the difference between the celebrity and the average citizen. Celebrities don't always use their influence necessarily to try and alter viewpoints. An example of the power celebrity influence …show more content…
Some celebrity figures have been speaking out about their advocation of protesting the Dakota access pipeline, like Leonardo DeCaprio. The Dakota access pipeline is a pipe that would pump hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil from Alaska to other states. Though first planning to run the pipeline in a populated area, the planners changed their minds and wanted to instead run it through a Native American reservation. This of course rose concern to the people living on that reservation, which spread to concerning others, and helping protest this pipeline to not go through this reservation. Another advocate for these protests is Shailene Woodley; a popular actress who's famous for her leading role in the ‘Divergent’ series, and for playing the lead Hazel Grace in ‘The Fault in Our Stars’. Not only did she support the initiative, she took it upon herself to go there and help protest as well. While she was there, peacefully protesting, she was arrested for “rioting”. Before her arrest there had been very little to no coverage on the pipeline from the presidential campaign taking up most of the spotlight for news. When she was arrested it turned attention back to the pipeline, as video proved her innocence, and then showed that she was not arrested for “rioting”, but most likely to be silenced. About a week or so later a journalist was arrested there as well but then also charged …show more content…
Shailene Woodley is not the only celebrity to do this. Emma Watson (most known for her role as Hermione Granger in ‘Harry Potter’) decided to go to college after the Harry Potter series was over at Brown University, and use her influence and opinion to become an activist and to fight for female equality. Whether you are a journalist, a famous actress, a model or an average everyday person, we all have a right to express our own
Many people are taking a stand with the Standing Sioux tribe to stop the construction of an oil pipeline. Worland addresses this issue by informing readers the recent facts about the Dakota Access Pipeline. Many protesters are using this opportunity to address other issues that Pipeline will create in the long run. Meanwhile, the Energy Transfer Partners company will not let protesters stop the construction from happening. The construction still continues despite the current Administration’s request for a pause. As a result, the fight between the Standing Rock Sioux and Energy Transfer Partners has sparked warmth throughout the bitter North Dakota
The Dakota Access Pipeline is a pipeline that moves crude oil from the west side of North Dakota to the border of Illinois and Canada. There is a lot of controversy around it because it runs right past The Great Sioux Reservation. The Reservation has had many problems with the US Government throughout the years. Many people are protesting the construction of it, much to their prevail, Obama’s administration delayed its construction.
“In a few decades, the relationship between the environment, resources, and conflict may seem almost as obvious as the connection we see today between human rights, democracy, and peace (Nobel Peace Prize Medalist Maathai 2004).” A Canadian oil company that goes by TransCanada hopes to build an oil pipeline that would extend an enormous 1,200 miles onto an already gargantuan 2,600 mile long pipeline. Keystone XL represents just under a third of the entire Keystone project, and every other piece of pipe has been built and laid out. In fact, TransCanada 's pipeline system is already shipping hundreds of thousands of barrels of crude oil from the Canadian oil sands across the U.S. border -- and into Illinois (Diamond). The current proposal would take the pipeline on a journey all the way through to Texas. Extracting crude oil from oil sands would be enormously problematic for the environment as it causes the pumping of about 17% more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than standard crude oil extraction. Tar sand oil has levels of carbon dioxide emissions that are three to four times higher than those of conventional oil, due to more energy-intensive removal and refining processes (Friends of the Earth). The construction of the Keystone XL pipeline would stimulate employment, the effects would be temporary and the whole scheme would produce a negative long term outcome. The construction of the Keystone XL pipeline has caused
The Dakota Access Pipeline is controversial topic among people as to whether its installment is a good thing or a bad thing. This is comparable to the Keystone XL oil pipeline, whose construction, after seven years of protest, was finally canceled. But before any conclusions on the Dakota pipeline's fate can be made, one must take a look at both side or the story.
Actress Shailene Woodley was arrested Monday for criminal trespassing after participating in a protest against the decoded access pipeline in North Dakota. Her arrest was streamed on face book live, she recorded more than two hours of footage at several points whirly turned to the camera or rather turned the camera on herself to address viewers after one of the organizers announces that it’s time to leave, Woodley and her mother continued videotaping the police presence and putting the confrontation that lead to her arrest. Woodley has been open about her support for environmental issues; she has supported Bernie Sander’s positions including his stand against the Dakota access pipeline. At a news conference later Monday, the Mountain County
The Atlantic Coast Pipeline is a proposed natural gas pipeline that is planned to go through three states along the east coast; West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina. The pipeline is claimed to create 19,440 jobs and provide clean reliable power to the residents within the borders of the three states. The pipeline seems to be beneficial in improving the livelihood of the residents of these states, however, the pipeline is also taking from the communities it is planned to go through. The Atlantic Coast Pipeline has created some controversy, among individuals especially when it comes to the equity of specific communities. Equity is the quality of being fair when it comes to making decisions.
Thesis: The U.S. should stop the production of the North Dakota Access Pipeline because it would break the contract made over a hundred years with the Native Americans, it violates the ninth amendment, and it is not environmentally safe.
In my artwork, I focused on the problem of the Dakota Access Pipeline. While it may not be as popular as the election, or things such as that, this issue need to be resolved. In North Dakota, there was a planned pipeline that would go underground to supply oil to markets that sell it. But this pipeline was originally going to be stored near Missouri river, which is the only water source to a local Native American tribe called the Standing Rock Sioux. There could be a possible chance that the pipe could break, polluting the water and making it unhealthy. So, in response to that, many of the Native American tribes are protesting against the pipeline. For example, PBS learning media states, "Numerous Native American tribes, ranchers, politicians
Oil is one resource America relies heavily on. Oil has a negative impact on the environment and has long lasting affects. The Dakota Access Pipeline is a major controversial topic in the news. The Dakota Access Pipeline is being used to transport oil from North Dakota to Illinois. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is located where the pipeline will be passing through. The pipeline disrupts the lives of the Native Americans who live there. I believe that the Dakota Access Pipeline should not be built because of the affects on the environment and goes against the rights of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Greider and Garkovich’s Landscapes: The Social Construction of Nature and the Environment discusses how the environment we live in is apart of our landscape. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe sees their landscape as sacred and a place they need to protect.
Have you heard about the protest going on about the North Dakota Pipelines? Encase you haven't here is some information and views on it. First who’s fighting? Well, that simple members from the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, well that’s how it started off anyways, now there is several hundred Native Americans from all over the country. Since April they have been gathering outside of Cannon Ball to protest.
The protest of the South Dakota oil pipeline seems to be getting so bad that it is becoming dangerous for the protesters. The use of excessive force by the police towards the protesters is in some cases life threading the use of rubber bullets, tear gas and high powered water houses in the dead of winter where temperature are below freezing at night it’s sickening that they can use such extreme measures . The people of the standing rock reservation are only fighting for the safety of their water and ecosystem and they are being treated like criminals. I worry with the election of trump the chances are that there is nothing they can do to put a stop to the pipeline I find it extremely hard to believe he is going to side with the protesters. What if the pipeline is happening
Since September of 2016 thousands of peaceful protesters had come to support the NoDAPL hashtag trend while fighting off police intrusion and violence. It brung up media’s attention and Army Corps of Engineers had begun to develop a way to accommodate rerouting the pipeline for the purpose of not contaminating the Missouri River. However, on January 24, 2017 newly elected president Donald Trump signed a memo to allow the original route of the Dakota Access Pipeline to go through the rivers and the Sioux’s burial grounds. While the pipeline would benefit supplies of oil to our country, it disrespects Native Americans’ cultural history and beliefs as well as damages the environment. Many Native American’s have cultural artifacts and religious customs that mean great essence to their tribes and the people within them. By proceeding with the pipeline, it allows the indigenous people’s land to be torn and damage relics that apply a substanial amount of respect to their historical trials. The Sioux tribe has many religious traditions that are relative to their lands, one of which includes
For months, tension have mounted between protestors and law enforcement officials over the faith of an oil pipeline not far from Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. It has become an environmental and cultural flashpoint, stirring passion across social media and drawing thousands of protestors in the United States and around the world.
This is the new “celebritized” (Combs 123) political culture in which advocacy organizations must function. Because the media is so inundated with celebrity
On the 23rd of March 1989 under the command of captain Joe Hazelwood Exxon Valdez departed the Trans Alaska Pipeline Terminal. What happened the following day was a real tragedy that has lead to years of research and heated debates on how to accurately measure the monetary value of damage done not only to the environment, but also to those who could have come into contact with it.
