Al Kaline: A Detroit Tiger's Player

After being selected in the Major League draft directly out of high school, and without playing a single game at the minor league level, Kaline became a member of the Detroit Tigers at age 18, appearing in a few dozen games during his first year. But Kaline’s breakout year came a season later in 1955, when he became the youngest winner of the batting crown, dethroning another Tiger legend who had previously held that accolade: the Georgia Peach, Ty Cobb. Throughout his twenty-two year tenure as a Detroit Tiger’s player, where he spent every season of his career, Al Kaline achieved both personal and team honors. Although extremely talented, his tendency to play through pain, including facial, foot and shoulder injuries were the factors that helped him become a favorite among fans. Kaline often chose to lead by example, rather than expressing his emotions through words, which only added to his fandom, as supporters of the team came to respect him as a reserved but competitive player who did everything in his power to win. Unlike some current players, known for their flashy but sometimes inconsistent play, Kaline was recognized throughout his career for his meticulous, dedicated approach to both sides of the game, signified through his career .850 on base percentage + slugging percentage and numerous gold glove awards. During the same period of time as his playing career, the city of Detroit, could be described with the same characteristics as their introverted poster boy. With many employed primarily through the automobile industry, including most of my elderly family members, serving as laborers and factory workers employed by Ford, General Motors and Chevrolet, citizens of Detroit, could easily identify with the player due to his off the field personality and personal history. My Grandmother, who worked in a factory for Ford during Kaline’s playing days, recalls the Tiger as “ A gentlemen in every sense of the word, who was looked up to by Greg and other children as a role model for the way he carried himself and looked after his family… too many players care more about themselves, rather than how they might represent their team, but not him.” In many ways, Al Kaline was a throwback player in comparison to the current game, and in a time period in which the culture surrounding baseball was in flux, his style was more traditional; he was never involved in controversy over contracts, took-pay cuts for the betterment of his team, had no agent,
