Since last century, air pollution has become one of the most popular topics related to people’s healthy life. After the Second World War, the consumption of fossil energy increase sharply due to the rapid development of industry and transportation, however, there almost no relevant environmental regulations to control the negative effects caused by industrial emissions. Therefore, air pollution became a growing problem. This paper will compare the conditions of air pollution between Los Angeles and Beijing, and discuss both reason and measures of their pollution.
On July 26, 1943, the downtown of Los Angeles was suddenly enveloped by acrid smoke in the morning. Thousands of people began to cough, tear and sneeze. Some of them even appeared

While people keep studying about air pollution, Haagen-Smit, a chemistry professor at the California Institute of Technology and retired chemist Brunelle first found that the acrid smoke was formed by the photochemical effect in the atmosphere, which means the pollution was belonged to photochemical pollution instead of directly industrial emissions.
Of course, reducing the emissions of the stationary source was still the main treatment method before people found modern management method successfully. At that time, a lot of people used garbage incinerator in their backyard; they were against the ban of garbage incinerator because they thought chemical factories were the main source of pollution. Until 1958, garbage incinerators were banned after the establishment of garbage collection plan.
The first efficient modern management method was added leakproof hose on the fuel gun. When officials reviewed the air pollution control of Los Angeles in 1997, they said that adding leakproof on the fuel gun was the most economical and effective measure during 50 years.
After keeping reduce emissions, the dust has decreased two-thirds in the early 1950s of Los Angeles. However, ozone in the air, the main reason cause people’s untoward effect, still keep growing. Finally, people have to face the pollution brought by motor vehicle. During the whole 1950s, people were
The 1920s was a time of prosperity and new ideas that challenged the social norm and began the movement into modernism that we know of today. The economy was still coming off of the First World War and tax policies were creating an economic boom with the increase of discretionary income. The United States was in a scary position on what to do after coming home from such a brutal war that was going to end all wars. The young generation brought out the best in people and challenged the intellect of many bright minds that had the solid traditionalist views with the new fast paced modernistic thoughts. The 1920s were a time of growth and led the United States and the modern views came quick and made a lasting impact.
On Friday, December 5th, 1952, a smog rolled into London, England, that later would be known as the Great Smog of 1952. The smog was formed by a deadly combination of a dense fog and sooty black coal smoke. The smog caused the temperature to drop, so people put more coal on their fires causing more smoke. It became so dark that some said they couldn’t see their feet. The smog did not disperse until Tuesday, December 9th, 1952, but by then at least four thousand people died, and many more were suffering from respiratory problems.
Being one of the biggest social issues in Los Angeles, Air pollution has two main reasons: vehicle traffic and population growth. Actually, it is in a such crucial level that scientists indicate that air pollution in Los Angeles may endanger peoples lives. Scientific researches show that the air pollution causes cancer and have an impact on pregnant woman. Advertisements shows us some solutions like making public transportation common and sustainable housing. With the growing population of Los Angeles, something has to be done . Otherwise it is going to be impossible to deal with the air pollution. Population growth in Los
The start of major air pollution started in the Industrial revolution. All the smoke and steam released gathered in the atmosphere. The hole in the ozone layer and creation of global warming was a direct result of the pollution from the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution was the first time where major air and water pollution took effect. The long term effects have ruined the world in many
The London Smog was an evitable disaster but the problem was that no one knew that they were bringing it on. London’s air conditions had been bad since the 1200’s and they just started to get worse in the 1600’s. In the year of 1952, December, the weather was significantly colder than previous winters and that led to the burning of more coal in fireplaces around houses in London. Back then, coal was very low-quality and sulphurous, thus, many sulphur dioxides were released into the air. Along with the toxins, there was an anticyclone which caused cooler weather and fog began to form throughout the city. The fog, chimney smoke, vehicle exhaust gases and sulphur dioxides all mixed together to create a very dangerous smog. By the time the people of London realised they needed to slow down the rate at which
The activities that led to the pollution were the storage of fuel, Volatile Organic Compounds, metals, and other chemicals. Years of flight testing and rocket
For years leading up to the 1940s, pollution in the city steadily grew along with the increase in people and cars. Los Angeles became a prime location for lingering pollution due to its geographic position. Because it sat in a valley between the mountains and ocean and because of its always relatively low winds, the particles and emissions could not be blown and dissipated into the atmosphere, creating a blanket of smog that slowly engulfed the city. Although air pollution control programs had been implemented before, they had been unsuccessful. The first significant action was taken in the fall of 1943. (“Key events in,” 2011)
An awakening transition took place in my life when I began the first steps toward my career. I quickly realized the importance of where the beginning would take me; It enhanced the vision of what I had already desired for my future. After graduating high school and taking the initiative to seek what my heart desired, I found that I was drawn to the business and healthcare industries. I decided to take my newfound discovery and become involved in business surrounding the healthcare industry with the intent to ensure quality care to patients in the business realm. Thus, directing myself on this right path of beginning my career I knew would be imperative for a successful future.
Since human’s activity, pollution becomes a big problem in the world. There are a lot of part of pollutions include water pollution, light pollution and air pollution. Air pollution is happened in our life. The United States is also a victim of air pollution. In 1943, Los Angeles photochemical smog event occurred. The whole of Los Angeles was covered with smoke. There are about 400 people died and a lot of fruits in orchards began to wither.
The amount of factories and industries has grown immensely through the previous years which has resulted in an expansion in the consumption of petroleum products. Innovation has begun to increase and has promoted the expansion of the production of cars. As stated by the Air Quality Research Center, “Air pollution is one of the most dangerous environmental problems, causing many adverse health effects and responsible for 50,000 deaths in the U.S. each year” (Air Pollution and Health – Air Quality Research Center.). The smog and
Air pollution in Beijing has generated due to the fact that the speed of development has been too fast. In former days, it is easy to see plenty of people with bicycle, however, after economic development in China and growth of the middle class, frequency of people with bicycles has been decreasing. According to Wagstaff’s article, there are more than 120 million cars and another 120 million motor vehicles in China. Too many car ownership is one of the gravest causes to increase air pollution in Beijing. In fact,
Near a great forest there lived a poor woodcutter and his wife, and his two children; the boy's name was Hansel and the girl's Grethel. They had very little to bite or to sup, and once, when there was great dearth in the land, the man could not even gain the daily bread. As he lay in bed one night thinking of this, and turning and tossing, he sighed heavily, and said to his wife, "What will become of us? we cannot even feed our children; there is nothing left for ourselves."
Secondly, many people gradually realize the harm of air pollution because not only will it affect body’s health, but also influence plants and climates. In the article, “Haze in China: Current and Future Challenges,” the author claims that regional haze causes public anxiety and official concerns, which affects not only body health but also daily life because high concentrations of PM2.5 impacts people’s blood vessel of brain and other health problems (Li, Meina; Zhang, Lulu). Also, atmospheric pollutants could be harmful to the human body in many ways. The main manifestations are respiratory diseases and physiological disorders, as well as the irritation of mucosal tissues such as the nose-eye correlated diseases. The number of the patients who have respiratory disease in the hospital has increased a lot since the hazy weather appeared in many cities. What’s more, atmospheric pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide and fluoride are especially harmful to plant seriously. When the concentration of those pollutants is high enough, it will produce
Air pollution in China is known to be a nuisance to the Chinese as it has influenced their social and environmental life, however, it only affects the North-East region of China. Air pollution was a sign of economic process to China’s development as the increase in coal burning helped with the industrialisation which boosted their economy. Having a boost in their economy led the air to become polluted causing problems to people’s social and environmental life as their urbanisation and population started to grow (World bank, 2007). Not only that but it was also caused by vast amounts of automobiles being on the road as the vehicles produce many carbon dioxide emissions that are harmful to the air. Due to the air pollution in China, it has affected the social and environmental life of the Chinese people as it causes many of them
Air pollution, as one of the concerns that had raised the attention of environmentalists and scientists in the developed countries, now have been targeted at the country, China, that have been going through a rapid development of industrialization. However, unfortunately, the haze pollution in China, measured by the emission of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matters, and carbon dioxide, has already gone far away beyond being the side effect of the development but also the handicap of the country’s future.
