In the novel, The Help, Skeeter finds out she does not belong in the town she grew up. After graduation she wanted to be an editor at Harper & Row. Although she was declined, she received a letter that giving her advice stating, “ go to your local newspaper and get an entry-level job” (Stockett 83). This became Skeeter’s motivation and goal to someday work for Harper & Row. Her first step in making the dream come true was becoming Miss Myrna. Although she had the job, she had no clue about cleaning. Skeeter decided to ask Miss Leefolt’s maid, Aibileen, if she would be willing to help. Aibileen agree to help and this became the start of a relationship between the two women. She asked Aibileen if she wished she could change things. Skeeter wanted …show more content…
Miss Leefolt has never been mean to her and has been easy going until Hilly insists that Miss Leefolt install a bathroom for Aibileen. Hilly says that installing a bathroom will increase the house value and the help “ carry different kinds of diseases” ( Stockett 10). Aibileen has not had much thought of wanting things to change because this is the way they are. It was not until Miss Skeeter asked “ Do you ever wish you could...change things?” (Stockett 12) that Aibileen starts becoming bitter about the treatment of her and her friends. She cannot shake the feeling of being mistreated especially since she knows that most likely the kids she raises will be just like their parents. The parents take credit for the work when they do not help take care of the children themselves. Aibileen knows it is dangerous to be talking with Miss Skeeter and helping her out with Miss Myrna but she does it anyways. After working on Miss Myrna for a while Miss Skeeter asks Aibileen if she can interview her. Initially she told Miss Skeeter she would not help her write her book because she could not risk getting caught. Eventually after being fed up Aibileen decides that she will tell Miss Skeeter stories about what is like working for people who are
Skeeter is a young educated privileged daughter of a cotton plantation owner. The fact that skeeter participates through many different changes as the story progresses and realizes that it is her own choice to choose what to believe in, and shows that she remains a dynamic character (2009:63). Skeeter decides to cross dangerous lines and start writing a book that contains the real stories of the black maids in Jackson (2009:102) as a result of that skeeter became more and more distanced from her white friends , and closer to the black people remains her as a round character because of her developed personality and multiplied traits, beside from that skeeter decides to go against all the people and go her on way. On the other hand Alan Ward is a FBI agent who is a
Aibileen’s new separate bathroom was finally finished and Miss Leefolt announced the news. Aibileen's has her own bathroom so there isn’t any spreading of disease. The white family’s at that time always had maids, or also referred to as the “the help.” The women of the white homes did not have to put much effort due to their black maids, who performed all their daily tasks. This quote shows how “the help,” for instance, Aibileen have to obey, with their little to no privileges. They couldn’t express how they feel or what they want. Extreme racial segregation was common during this time. These black maids weren’t treated humanely and fairly, but like something lower just because of their color. For Miss Leefolt to spend her money to build Aibileen
Aibileen, on the other hand, hasn’t obtained as much education as Mrs. Skeeter. Aibileen was black, and back in her days, blacks did not have the opportunity to receive the same education as whites did. Aiblieen was a very bright student and would have been very successful if she could have finished school. Even her teacher, Miss Ross, said that she was very intelligent, “You’re the smartest in the class, Abilieen.” Unfortunately, she could not finish school because she had to support her mother with bills that she could not pay herself. She stopped going to school when she was fourteen years old. She instead went to work as a maid and wait on white families. Because of her lack of education, she did not speak very well. She often used slang
Following the death of her son Aibileen gets a job working as a maid for Elizabeth Leefolt who has just had a baby girl Mae Mobley and is in need of help taking care of her. Aibileen tries her best to teach Mae Mobley
The Help is a novel that explores the lives of black maids living in the racially unjust, Mississippi in the 1960s, by using the perspective of two black maids and a female, white writer. Minny and Aibileen are the two maids who are close friends and like many other maids, have spent the majority of their life cleaning up after white families and raising their kids. Skeeter is the third character the novel centers around; she fondly remembers her own maid, Constantine but lacks information about her disappearance and current whereabouts. Her ambition to write and love for her childhood career lead her and the maids to eventually come together and become involved in a dangerous project which puts all their lives at risk.
One of the strongest relationships in the book was between Aibileen and Skeeter. Nevertheless, Skeeter was white and wealthy and Aibileen was the black maid ordinarily, Skeeter was still extremely kind to Aibileen. The relationship between these two characters definitely helped the two of them be the best them they could be. During this time, Aibileen assisted Skeeter when she wrote her first book which happened to be about the way the white people treated their black maids. With a smile on her face, Skeeter made it a point to talk to Aibileen every day.
Aibileen was being treated like as if she wasn’t a human, because she wasn’t allowed to use the same bathroom in the house that she cleans and takes care of every singe day, but instead was built her own separate bathroom. She was treated bad and was also paid badly. The money she was being paid is not even enough for her to put together a household and to pay bills. While all this was going on, she found a way to fight back by helping a young girl write a book that exposes how “The Helps” were being treated in the households they take care of.
She gets this extravagant idea to write a book about the life as a black maid. Skeeter says, “ You said to write about things that disturb me, particularly if it bothers no one else.” When she says this quote to her boss. This quote shows that Skeeter wants to go out and explore which in this case means go and make known of the blacks and what they are
she doesnt do so because she finds more suttle ways to prove her point. she stays calm while reciving her punishment. "but i kept my head in that awful place[the oven] cause i'd rather be anywhere else sides answering miss. leefolts questions"(stockett 13). in a way she fels greatful that she doesnt have a family anymore because she doesnt want them to go through the same atrocities shes going through at the given moment. later on ablileen takes care of mae mobely likes she her own child. despite the fact that she is a white baby. miss. leefolt doesnt tak care of mae properly making aibileen more of a mother figure to her."miss leefolt slap baby girl back a her bare legs so hard i jump from the sting"(stockett 22). aibileen believes that a person is not defined by how they look but rather their actions ans behaviour make the person good or bad. aibileen likes mae mobley becasue she doesnt hate abileen based on what she looks like. in the meantime aibleen wants to help Miss. skeeterwrite a book about how the maids are treated while working. she essentially wants to be a voice to help start the civil rights movement and help make a brighter future. aibileen was against helping miss. sketter at
For instance when she gets home and attempts to tell her mom about her new job . Her mom is not content with Skeeter’s decision due to her belief that marriage is more crucial than getting a job. Skeeter does not concur with her mother because she is pleased with the way her life is (Taylor). Skeeter believes that women should be able to work at an actual job not just at home. She thinks that following her own dreams are more important than following her mom's dream for her. Another example is when Skeeter is interviewing Aibileen and Minnie Aibileen starts getting emotional because her son was killed by a white man who didn't care that her son was hurt. The room went silent (Taylor). Skeeter is just in awe of what little respect whites can have for blacks in any situation. She feels that people should be aware of situations like this from a black person's perspective, not just a white person. Skeeter has different outlook of women's roles in society and racism compared to her friends and
She works for Elizabeth, an affluent white woman who is pregnant with her second child, even as she neglects her first child. Aibileen is the liaison between Skeeter, Elizabeth’s best friend, and the other maids.
He got the idea from a book called “The Invisible Man”, and Aibileen decides to help Skeeter with it because of Miss Hilly. Unlike the book, Skeeter comes up with the idea of writing what it’s like to be a black maid working for a white family herself, and Aibileen chooses to help her with it because of God and Miss Hilly. Near the end of the book, Aibileen gives Skeeter a copy of “The Help” signed by everyone that helped out. In the movie, the church (filled with everyone who helped the book) gives Aibileen a signed book.
The three girls working together begins to create the solution to the main conflict. The main conflict in this case is blacks are being treated in a way that is not fair. They are being treated as if they are disease carrying things. Skeeter wants to change that perspective on people. That’s why she wants to write a book on how black maids are treated in Mississippi. “I turn and hear Pascagoula’s knock on my door. That’s when the idea hit me. No. I couldn’t. That would be . . . crossing the line.” - (Page 104) This was foreshadowing what Skeeter would do next. It let the reader know what was going to happen. Minny and Aibileen are there to help Skeeter with her book. They are the interviews. At first, the book starts out with Aibileen doing a normal day of work. She notices the Skeeter isn’t like all the other ladies. She’s more polite. When Skeeter gets a job at the local newspaper she starts to go to Aibileen for help with the Miss Myrna articles. She is even willing to pay her to help her. “ ‘For your help,’ I say quietly, ‘ I’ve put away five dollars for every article. It’s up to thirty-five dollars now.’ ” (Page 126) This shows that Skeeter is quite
Aibileen is the most successful mother figure in the story. She lives on her sons legacy by becoming a writer therefore helping Skeeter’s book to become published, but she is also a true mother to a girl who isn't her daughter or even race. Even though The Help by Kathryn Stockett is supposed to display the outrageous treatment of the black maids in this time, I believe that there wouldn't have been a real story without the concept of motherhood involved. Motherhood was the piece that held everything together in the book.
To have a relationship with a person of an opposing race was atypical of the societal norms of the 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi. However, Aibileen and Miss Skeeter challenge this view by developing a relationship characterized by equality and kindness to create a social change. Miss Skeeter, a recent college graduate, returns from college with a new perspective about race. With the help of the education Miss Skeeter received, she begins to dismiss society’s views. She realized quickly that her actions towards the help are much different from her peers who
