1. The Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service are called America’s Health Responders. And I believe that is a great honor. I believe I will gain great experience through this internship by helping the underserved. Also, after learning about this internship, I began exploring the careers in the Commissioned Corps and there are so many amazing opportunities for Environmental Engineers and Environmental Health which is the direction I want my career to go.
2. Service is a central value in my life. I was raised with the belief that no leader can be a true leader if that person does not know how to serve others. At Cornell, I continued in this spirit of serving others through my project team AguaClara. I first joined AguaClara the

My professional background includes AguaClara as mentioned before, as well as an internship with the New York City Council, being an Associate Cornell Ambassador, and being a student manager with the Cornell Big Red Managers. AguaClara has allowed me to develop significant research skills while apply them to serving others. As I research rapid sand filtration, I am able to help AguaClara provide clean drinking water to communities in Honduras. I will also be travelling with AguaClara to Honduras this winter to understand the significance of the team’s research on communities in Honduras. At Cornell I am also a Cornell Ambassador. As an ambassador, I talk to curious perspective students and their families about Cornell. It is important that I do not share false information about Cornell with them, instead I am to apply a realistic view of my experiences at Cornell. For many of these families, what I say to them will have a huge impact on if they decide to come to Cornell, and for that reason, I must remain truthful to them. I believe that being truthful is also very important when working with underserved populations. Another necessary skill is the ability to communicate effectively. My former internship with the New York City Council allowed me to develop the ability to not only speak to others, but also listen to their concerns. When working with underserved populations, it is very important to listen to their concerns and see what they are having issues with. Taking the time out to listen to concerns allows a person to come up with the best solutions for those
For my internship, I served under the Allegheny County Health Department in Pittsburgh, PA. I served as the National Health Corps Member for the Women, Infants, and Children Program as their Care Coordinator for all nine offices. Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a supplemental nutrition agency that targets pregnant and postpartum women and young children ages 5 and under who are at risk of malnutrition. My supervisor Annie Nagy along with my mentors in the office made sure I was able to receive all of the materials and resources I would need to have a complete and successful internship.

AmeriCorps is the first opportunity that I’ve encountered that will allows me to incorporate both my community services volunteering experiences and my career passions. I have experiences in community outreach and engagement by being a program coordinator and I have healthcare experiences through my services in the hospital playroom. Yet, my career passion is to combine the two and work with the community on health issues and concerns that underserved and underrepresented populations have in regards to community health. With the AmeriCorps program, I am able used the skills and knowledge that I’ve gained from my experiences and turn them into a real setting and make an impact on the lives of the community.
It is a great example of dedication and an exhibition of kindness for others; I feel that it is from my parents that I have learned how to exemplify it in my own life. My parents fled their homeland Nigeria to make a better life for themselves and in turn help their family. This has impacted me in that I hope to also selflessly serve and make improving the lives of others important to me. I have demonstrated this as a mentor in the University of Oklahoma Future Health Scientists Program, and through my involvement in student government, HOSA-Future Health Professionals, Key Club, and as a member of the Oklahoma City Youth Council. As a mentor, I help in the sustainment and empowerment of Oklahoma’s youth by teaching them concepts of science related to health which will in turn prepare them for their future career. Being a part of student government has allowed me to help organize Care Share and HEISMAN Week. During Care Share, I planned what items needed to be donated and delivered those items. During HEISMAN Week, I encouraged my peers to donate money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation by leading dares and other events. As a member of the Oklahoma City Youth Council, I attend council meetings and visit with government officials which has also allowed me to serve my peers for I am the connection between them and city officials. As a member of HOSA-Future Health Professionals and Key Club, I notify others of volunteering
This life lesson has influenced me to become a member of various community projects and organizations; promoting change in my community. Service is a value very dear to me because I love to give back to the community and help people who are in need. Truth is the core value that defines the integrity of a person's character. Truth defines me simply because I believe honesty is the best policy. To be trustworthy is to be accountable and dependable. I would enhance the legacy of Howard University by bringing excellent leadership skills, team working skills, honesty, integrity, and excellence. I would bring new innovative ideas and perspectives to the university through my diverse approach on sensitive subject matter such as Racial Disparities in America to Gender Equality for Women. I also would bring my drive for community service to the many programs on the University's campus such as their Alternative Spring Break. The core values that the university holds dear are the same motives that push me to make a difference in the world. I live by these values daily which would prove me to be a great addition to Howard University’s
Some of my extracurricular involvements include interning with Junior Achievement of Delaware in their Marketing & Events department and working as the National Social Media Coordinator for my Fraternity Pi Alpha Phi Fraternity, Inc. My time spent managing the National Social Media accounts with Pi Alpha Phi Fraternity, Inc. produced noticeable personal growth in areas such as professionalism, time management, and the need for cultural awareness. These values were essential to not only my success but also our Fraternity’s visibility and reach on outlets such as the Presidential Blog on WordPress, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The time I have spent studying my culture has helped mold me into a worker that is willing to research and share information and stories to help fight for greater ethnic representation and visibility.
I am Jamral Dejohn Rease, From Greensboro, North Carolina, son of Sammuel Johnson and Karen Rease. Currently I attend the University of North Carolina at Pembroke seeking a Master degree in the field of social work. After graduating from Grimsley high school in Greensboro North Carolina, I enrolled in the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, with a scholarship to play football. After a career ending concussion my junior year, I decided to pursue a profession in human services. To be engaged in my community and its development is very important to me because the people I admire engage in the same responsibility on a professional and humane level. Moreover, they take personal responsibility by staying engaged in community. These are values and beliefs that I have integrated throughout every aspect of my life. Further, surrounding myself around more individuals that strive to continue these goals to aid in my development as a greater leader and mentor
Planning and directing this service project taught me to lead by example, delegate responsibility, and be a conscientious organizer preparing me for the demands required of a leader in today’s society. I plan to use this experience to continue to serve my community and nation. Service to me is not just another thing that I can add to my college application, but is a deeper commitment. Service forges an unbreakable bond between me and those I serve, and a bond that I cherish very
There are multiple branches in the Department of Public Health, but I was placed on the stroke team that was responsible for increasing awareness of the signs of stroke (FAST), improving hospitals’ infrastructure for stroke patients, and sending hospitals data on their stroke patients to see if any of the new policies the stroke team implemented had made any changes in the amount of individual that survive from a stroke and their discharge time. This internship introduced me to the nuances of health I had never even thought
I grew up, seeing with my own eyes, with the social issues and effects of oppression in our society. As a first-generation student from immigrant parents, I believe I can apply my knowledge of third-world cultures, all ranges of socioeconomic and racial communities, racial issues, and social reconciliation to the trip and the community. I believe being a part of a leadership will allow me to learn stories from another place in this country, as well as share my experiences as a low-income immigrant child during the trip.
Cottey College’s wide range of diversity among both the students and professors gave me a multicultural perspective and heightened appreciation of the world I live in. The small class sizes and student/faculty ratio gave me the intimate atmosphere that I so much desired. Furthermore, the volunteer and internship opportunities at Cottey allowed me to develop skills necessary for successfully planning, coordinating, and carrying out volunteer events, as well as helped me in improving my communication skills, all of which are skills I hope to continue improving on at my transfer
Even as a young child, I knew I wanted to pursue a career that would allow me to interact with people on a daily basis. This deep-rooted love for others originated from the values instilled in me as a child; values of loyalty, dedication, and compassion. Throughout my undergraduate career, I have discovered what is truly important in life and the impact I want to make in my community. I have found I have a strong desire to serve others, to help them and to make a tangible difference in their lives. Over the past four years, I have had the opportunity to serve those in need in my community. Each year, I am involved in numerous service projects that bring food and clothing to low income families, as well as assist in the rebuilding and restoring of homes. Each Thanksgiving, I help collect food, organize donations, and distribute Thanksgiving meals to families who, otherwise, would go without. These service opportunities have taught me how to connect with individuals on a personal level, regardless of our differences in life experiences. I have learned the importance of service, human interaction, and most importantly, listening. My compassion for others, servant attitude, and ability to communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds will help me to succeed in graduate school, as well as allow me to become an exceptional
The agency where I am interning is Partnership with Children. “Partnership” as it is called, works to strengthen the emotional, social and academic skills of at-risk children to prepare them for success--academically, socially, and in life. “Partnership’s” programs aim to bridge the gap between those who have a vested interest in working within New York City’s highest-need public schools, and those in need. “Partnership’s” goal is to transform the overall culture of many of the city’s struggling schools by helping students cope with the extreme stress of living in poverty. Helping students thrive in safe and supportive schools that encourage
