What I gathered from this week’s lesson is that agroterrorism is a cause for concern in the United States and ranges in the audience, much like every other issue, from those who believe it is a very real possibility, like Tommy Thompson, to those who feel like there is nothing to really worry about. The potential effects of agroterrorism in the United States could be a serious enough to affect a large number of people. It seems to be an effective and low-key technique to induce biological pathogens at one location, by only one individual, which in turn could affect thousands, if not more.
Food sources, especially today, which are produced by our agricultural sectors are done so by bulk. This means that a large group of people in
Nobody denies that the need for more food grows with the global population. Factory farms seem to be a solution to this problem since they produce mass quantities of food for cheap compared to their organic counterparts, which are forty-seven percent more expensive (Consumer Reports). The factory farming business, however, is not the best way to feed more people since it pollutes the environment. The factory
Agroterrorism is a direct attack against livestock or crops in an effort to damage a food supply. An attack against our food supply is an attack on one of the many critical infrastructures that our country has. A successful terrorist attack against this sector would be staggering to the country. In 2001 the food distribution industry registered 9.7 percent of the Nation’s Gross Domestic Product and generated cash receipts that exceeded 991 billion dollars (Chalk, 2003, pg. 3). The food distribution industry also makes up for a significant part of the work force in the United States. This is all effected if we were attacked biologically. The problem with a bio attack on our food supplies is lag time. Lag time is the time it would take for the federal government and general population to realize there is a problem with our food. It would then take a long period of time for the government to trace back the source of the large scale disease outbreak and determine whether it was a naturally occurring event, an accidental exposure, or a malicious attack. During this time food production would have to cease to stop the spread of the illnesses. The country’s finances would then be affected. Not to mention the amount of money it would take to trace the spread back to the source and destroy the livestock or crops responsible to stop the continued spread of disease. Even when food production began again the general population of the country would be leery about buying certain food products at first. This is what happened to the Blue Bell ice cream company after their listeria outbreak. Staggering our food supply and affecting America’s financial stability is exactly what terrorist organizations would love to achieve. In fact in 2002 American and allied troop raided a cave in Eastern Afghanistan and discovered thousands of documents outlining the U.S. agriculture system (Olson, 2012, pg. 1).
Furthermore, As families grow, to feed everyone, we many think about relying on other food source. We need to start relying on other
“Bioterrorism remains a major threat for the United States despite more than $65 billion spent on protecting the country from myriad dangers, the Bipartisan WMD Terrorism Research Center said in its latest report Wednesday. The center's Bio-Response Report Card evaluated U.S. preparedness for countering threats from bioterrorism and found the country remains vulnerable to multiple threats and "largely unprepared for a large-scale bioterrorist attack."”(UPI.com, 2011). There have been over a dozen leading U.S. bio-defense experts that have taken part in figuring out where we are exactly as a county and what the effects of a terroristic attack
Foreign and domestic policies are not linear, rather the policies are connected in a circle, with each policy reinforcing the values of another. Domestic American terrorism in the prison and detention systems and governmental reforms are influenced by the mobilization and ethnocentrism abroad. The militarization internationally is justified by the domestic handling of the same cultural issues within the United State borders. The United States has strangely used a near Catch-22 to handle dilemmas. The United States has allowed perspective to become reality, whether with oneself or regarding issues abroad, specifically in the Middle East. Terrorism is the use or threat of fear for political or economical gain. An internal characteristic of terrorism is how dependent it is of perspective, one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. To understand “terrorism,” a focus must be applied to the history, what drove an organization to commit such acts. Respectively, the Middle East has been a hotbed for the key word “terrorism,” especially because of 9/11. Subsequently, Muslims have been stigmatized by the United States as terrorists. The consequences spawned because of 9/11 require a look to the past to understand the present.
Eco terrorism has been said by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to be "the most significant domestic terror threat facing the United States today" ("Environmental"). This assumption could not be any more true. Everyday, the lives of many innocent citizens and animals are put in danger just for a group of people to try to make a statement about what they believe is right, and what they believe is wrong. These actions are "usually committed by individuals who believe that the exploitation of natural resources and despoliation of the environment are becoming so severe that action outside of conventional legal and environmental channels is required" ("Ecoterrorism." Pollution). Although this may be effective in getting the wanted attention
Bioterrorism can easily target citizens by poisoning food and water supplies. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration a.k.a. OSHA stated that there’s over 250 different foodborne diseases and illnesses, and are often mislabeled as food poisoning. These diseases can be potentially fatal to those inflicted. In the article “A Discussion of Findings and Their Possible Implications from a Workshop on Bioterrorism Threat Assessment and Risk Management”, Bruce Hope states that it’s possible to analyze the agricultural and food industries by making fake scenarios of potential threats. This analysis of America’s system can allow for professionals to better secure food supplies and ensure that bioterrorism is less likely of impacting the population. Defense measures can make these buildings invulnerable, or nearly so (Zilinskas, 906). Another method of defense against bioterrorism is vaccination. According to Rebecca Katz in “Public Health Preparedness: The Best Defense Against Biological Weapons” she argues that vaccination is a plausible method of defense against bioterrorism if necessary. She also states “[vaccines] are part of a preattack defense and a postattack containment” (Katz, 177). These vaccinations can aid people in case of smallpox and anthrax, both of which are viable threats to biosecurity. The article also states that while more research is necessary to improve the currently available vaccines, it’s a necessary component of preparing for bioterrorism. Katz states “In order to avoid chaos during an event, development and dissemination prior to an attack of vaccine priority and distribution plans is essential. These plans should incorporate the best methods for controlling the spread of disease, saving the most lives, and ensuring the utility of
I do believe that domestic terrorism is still a treat within the United States because of the current violence against civilian population like black lives matter, the KKK or those that randomly attack our police officers. There attentions are to intimidate the everyday law bidding citizens in an attempt to their way of thinking our beliefs. “Homegrown terrorists are produced a number of ways. The first involves individuals who become radicalized by personal experiences. The second might involve a similar pat to radicalization, but it also involves some type of foreign connections.” (White 2014 p. 323) These are the ones that may have parents or other family members from another country and attempt to attack U.S. citizens. I believe that
are sworn to serve. In order to do this law enforcement need to understand the
When it comes to emergency management, terrorism threats and attacks are hard to deal with. It’s a huge task and management personnel should handle with care to avoid putting the lives of the American people in danger. Most people believe that these attacks come from outside the U.S. and inspired by foreigners, but this is not always true. The acts of terrorism can happen anywhere by anyone. Next, I’m going to discuss attacks that have taken place in surrounding areas around Tennessee and prove that such threats can be made by anyone and not just by foreigners.
Agroterrorism is a substantial threat to the United States economy and agricultural sector. As Olsen (2012), mentions, the U.S. agricultural sector is extremely vulnerable to attack and an attack has already been considered by Al Qaeda. The two biggest potential effects of an agroterror attack would be fear and economic stress.
George Orwell’s Animal Farm discusses a farm of animals who have rebelled against their cruel human owner, deciding to run the farm themselves. The farm pigs, especially a pig called Napoleon and his accomplice Squealer, are in control of this animal-led farm where they establish a communist society. The novel depicts their journey into becoming just like their cruel owner. The lesson that Orwell wants readers to learn from Animal Farm is that communism is ineffective. He demonstrates this through the pigs’ ruthless control of the farm, the acceptance of the animals to Napoleon’s dictatorship, and the metamorphosis of the pigs into corrupt leaders - what they were fighting against in the first place.
There are many elements that can contribute to the health status of individuals and groups of people in a given area. Immunization status of a community plays a large factor in morbidity and mortality rates. Advancements in vaccinations over the years have contributed to the decline in many vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) throughout the world. Impact in Ethiopia Low-income countries, such as Ethiopia, are no exception to the progression of immunizations aimed to eliminate VPDs. Efforts like the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) have implemented now ten antigens in routine immunization plans for infants and children in Ethiopia.
According to this week lesson notes, agroterrorism is “an intentional introduction of a plant or animal disease with the purpose of causing monetary losses, creating fear, and/or undermining social stability” (AMU 2015, para. 1). The effects of agroterrorsim could be detrimental to society within the United States. The consumption of food to sustain life is vitally important. If a population felt that their food sources were truly threatened, an effective fear could be inflicted and in turn cause irrational behavior from the population. The United States agricultural sector would feel effects according to how effective of an attack is provided from the terrorists. Also mentioned in the lesson notes, the United States population spends significantly
For this project, I chose to spend time with someone who is religious to discuss our similarities and differences. I was born and raised a Roman Catholic. I fulfilled my sacraments, from baptism to confirmation. I attended church sporadically in grade school and attended Catholic schools from grade school through college. I interviewed my mother who continues to encourage to practice our faith. She attends church and prays daily. My mom finds value and meaning in the Catholic Church.
