Age of Responsibility
Nowadays kids thinks they’re grownup but are really still kids. Teenagers believe that grown up for things until they get to real obstacles. The Thesis that is good is brain development, car crashes, and military.
Currently, the age to serve in the military is 18. The supporting quote states that ‘’ today military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are left to question why fight America’s wars but still can’t patronize its bars”. The author points out that they question why fight if they can’t celebrate that they got back home safe. If they aren’t able to drink alcohol then they shouldn’t be able to die for this country. They should still be able to think about college.
Today, the legal driving age in most states ia 16. The author points out “ following a horrific in a district in Illinois state representative John D’Amico introduced legislation to raise the driving age in his state from 16 to 18”. Before “ 155 teens between the ages of 16 and 19 died in automobile crashes”. After the enforced law “it dropped to 92”. We should still give them time to develop their driving skills. If we raise the age of adulthood more lives will be saved.

The remarked that “ 18 year-olds went off to fight in World War 2 followed by the wars in Korea and in Vietnam. On the homefront, manufacturing jobs didn’t require a high school diploma. It was common for 18 year-olds to support themselves and start their own families.” If they can fight and work for this country we should be able to trust them with more things and give them more opportunities. If they are able to raise a family and go to work after they went to war, they should be
In the article “Driving to the Funeral” the author Anna Quindlen addresses the issue of the age to begin driving. She believes that the age 16 is far too young teenagers to begin driving. Driving at a too young of an age is one big reason that the way majority of teenagers die is because of automobile accidents. There isn’t enough limitations on young drivers, causing safety concerns. Parents shouldn’t allow their children to drive at such a young age, just because they want their kids to have “freedom and responsibility”.
Remember being sixteen and the only thing we could possibly do with the rest of our lives was wait to turn eighteen? On our eighteenth birthday we found a renewed sense of the word maturity as we were now able to walk into gas stations or grocery stores to buy lottery tickets or a pack of cigarettes. At this point in our lives we were able to attain a full driver 's license, no more permit or be in by 9 rules! But, there is still that "Under 21" label above or right next to your name, even though you gain a lot of responsibilities and rights at 18, your driver 's license is an indication and reminder to how “youthful” you still are. By age eighteen we are able to enlist (Enlisting) and die for our country. Everyone knows how heroic that is, however, “at eighteen years old you have nearly every burden and privilege as adults...except the right to drink alcohol” (Lynn)
I'm 19 years old and I can't enjoy the luxury of buying a drink of alcohol because i'm not 21 yet. However, I could join the military and fight for our country. Risking my life everyday for our country, but still couldn't purchase a bottle of wine to relax and regroup after being deployed. Does this make any sense to you?
It’s not like 18 year olds can’t do anything. If someone is old enough to die for their country, why can’t they have a drink every once in awhile? Every eighteen year old can legally vote (mumsnet). They can also be elected as mayor, or a local councilor (mumsnet). In addition, they can serve a jury, make a will, open a bank account with a debit card, etc (mumsnet). They can get married. (mumsnet) You can also purchase cigarettes, which can be so much more of a danger to yourself than alcohol. (mumsnet) You can ride a motorcycle with a license, which is extremely risky (mumsnet). In 2013, there were twenty-six times more accidents on motorcycles rather than cars (IIHS HLDI). Yet these young adults still cannot
It is horrendous that 18-year-olds are able to go to war and die but are not allowed to drink alcohol. If one has the capability and responsibility of holding a gun that could kill someone, that person should be allowed to drink legally. It is about being an adult, and at the age of 18 one is technically an adult. The drinking age should be lowered from 21 to 18.
The drinking age in the military is currently set at 21 years old as it is set for the rest of the country. There has been an age old statement widely used by those in the military, “If I am old enough to fight and die for my country, I should be old enough to drink”. The debate is out there that the drinking age should be lowered for all young adults from 18 years old to 21 years old. The idea behind the fact that younger people tend to have less responsibility and are not good candidates for being allowed to drink is a valid point. Those serving in the military are different in that respect for the fact that they have more responsibilities than that
You’re handed all these rights as a newly found adult to society. For example you’re able to fly a plane, serve on a jury, pay taxes, and even get married, but you wouldn’t be able to sip champagne at your own wedding. Most importantly you are reliable enough to fight, armed, for our country. If the government trusts eighteen year olds to serve, fight, and even die for our country, I find it hard to believe that they can’t trust us to drink in a mature manner. In 2008 there was roughly 90,000 men between the ages 18 and 19 that are in the military, and out of these 90,000 not a single one of them has the say in having an alcoholic drink after a long day of fighting for our country.
“I'm going to lower the drinking age to eighteen. If you're old enough to die in Iraq, you're old enough to drink.” (Friedman). Young Adults are at a stage in life where they make decisions no one believes they are ready for. The age of 18 is a coming of age.
Some might say that raising the driving age wouldn’t allow teens to get the experience they need to become better drivers. However, co-driving and graduated driving programs both give teens experience without compromising the safety of others. In fact, since the first graduated driver programs were instituted, there has been 1,348 fewer deadly crashes involving drivers ages 16-19. Some states have strict driving laws that require at least 70 hours of supervised driving, a minimum intermediate license age of 17, driving after 8 p.m. or a ban driving on with other teens in the vehicle. Graduated licensing programs restrict these actions until teen drivers have more experience because teens in the first few months of licensure have a high risk of crashing.
“At age 18 Americans has the right to vote and serve in the military. Thus, they should have the right to buy alcohol.” We can’t compare serving in the military or voting to buy alcohol because when you're buying alcohol you're not helping your country in any way. However, when you vote or serve you are doing the best thing for your country. Moreover, people at 18 can vote, drink at 21 and they can be president in 35. Each age, has its own activities and things.
The table provided a total number of how many military personals are combat specialty and the total of enlisted personals of all the branches combined. The percent of personals in combat of the total amount is approximately 7.2%. Based on these calculations, the percent of personnel enlisted in combat is a tiny percentage of total of all personnel enlisted. Clearly, stating that being able to join the military at 18 is a valid reason to lower the drinking age is because it involves them risking their life but, it an exaggerated to make it sound like it does. When an 18-year-old joins the military, it does not necessarily mean that their life is immediately put at risk, so it does not justify the reason of lowering the legal drinking age, and not every single 18-year-old is joining the military
Kingston says, "There they are in their rucksacks, and they 're going off to operate Abrams tanks and Black Hawk helicopters and squeeze the triggers on their M-4 rifles. We tell them they 're responsible enough to do that and risk their lives, but not responsible enough to have a beer with their steak on post. I think that 's an insult"(Peterson). What he is saying, is that if someone is going to make the decision to risk their life they should have the choice to drink. If the government will not give them that chance it is a stab in the back to the soldiers. They are responsible enough to make their own decisions by this time in their life. When they become a soldier they are showing that they are responsible enough to make that decision that could end their life, they should be able to make the choice to drink. If a person is 18 they are known in society as a responsible adult and should be able to make their own decisions no matter what it is.
The current driving age of sixteen is implemented in almost every state in the United States. Most states have become accustomed to the current driving age, but recently there are certain states that believe that the legal driving age should be raised due to various reasons. The main argument for most states is that sixteen-year old’s are not mature enough and lack the preparation to handle the responsibility to drive safely. Teenagers under the age of eighteen should be required to wait longer to get their license and should be more prepared before getting their license.
Putting teens on the road at a young age as low as 15-16-years-old allows them to gain experience that will help them become more accustomed to the road when they get their driving licences at 18. As stated in the article, Teenage Driving Laws May Just Delay Deadly Crashes, it says “Many teenagers, rather than deal with the extra restrictions for 16-17 -year-olds, are simply waiting until they turn 18, and skipping the restrictions altogether. As a result, a greater proportion of inexperienced drivers hit the road” (40). This proves that teens who do not drive at 16 are more likely to get into car crashes, because they wait til 18 to avoid being restricted like the 16- 17- year-olds. Teens who skip the 16 -17-year-old restrictions are just starving themselves from gaining the early knowledge on driving that is needed to prevent fatal crashes. The same article also says that, “There have been 1,348 fewer deadly crashes involving 16-year-old
Well, you are telling me that I can legally kill someone at the age of eighteen, while I sign up with the military and go to war but I can’t have a sip of alcohol. Due to this none senseless situation, age should be equaled. In other words, if voting and military sign up is eighteen, then drinking should also be eighteen. Besides at the age of eighteen you are legally an adult. Why can’t we drink then? Drinking age in Australia is eighteen, and in UK is as low as sixteen in restaurants. Studies have showed that those teens/adults are perfectly fine. In fact, Dr. Ruth Engs; professor of Applied Health Sciences at Indiana University in Bloomington, uses this examples to propose the following: “……the drinking age be lowered to about 18 or 19 and permit those of legal age to consume in socially controlled environment such as restaurants and official school and university functions” (direct quote from Dr. Engs).
