There are many religious organizations that are against homosexuality; however, the separation of church and government still exists and that makes an argument discretionary in terms of legality. Since Canada was not, in any sense, founded on Christian religion we should not tie Christian beliefs to our government. Citizens should not expect their government to express and defined Christian beliefs. As a Christian, I may not be a strong believer but I believe that there should be a great distance between the church and the government because I do not want others to be governed by laws who does not believe in religiously and there are many religions than just Christianity that have different beliefs and values. Many Christians supports homosexuality and gay marriages. In fact, I know a few Christians who said to be homosexual. I praise them for standing up for what they believe and this demonstrates despite the fact of Christianity is seen as homophobic, there are Christians that acknowledge homosexuality. Many Christians that are homosexual still believe in the Bible and that God exists. Furthermore, in the article The Relative Importance of Ethnicity and Religion in Predicting Attitudes towards Gays and Lesbians, it expresses that Baptists and Catholics do not fundamentally contrast in their attitudes towards lesbians or gay men. For example, in the book of scriptures it expresses that God created man and woman, He saw that coupling was good and He blessed them and told them to be productive and reproduce. The Bible does make a strong qualification when it comes to marriage; it states that an individual should marry the opposite sex. Not only does the Bible, by default, deny same sex marriages, but tradition and nature prohibits it also. The idea is against every tradition known to human race and is obviously against
Citizens all around the world want to be able to think and feel the way they want. In Canada, you have the freedom to think, feel, and express yourself in the way you want as long as it doesn’t harm others. In Canada, you have the right to think with a clear conscious and express your opinions without having to worry about people getting angry with you for feeling or believing something different from them. Your choice of religion is your to make without judgement. Everyone is different and everyone has different beliefs and in Canada, those beliefs are accepted and cherished. Take our government for example, some citizens believe the Conservatives should still be running the government and others believe that the Liberals should remain in control. In Canada, you have the right to gather and assemble without people trying to shut you down. Our government believes that if Canadians can express their opinions and believe their own thoughts then there will be less
Christians also see the acceptance of homosexuality as a threat to their beliefs and doctrines.
Even though the RCMP were against the homosexuals, at times they were happy to catch some of them. The RCMP knew that some the homosexuals were working for the government which they used at their advantage .If the homosexuals didn’t wants the news going back to their employer that would result in losing their job, the RCMP had most of them now working for them. They would classify the homosexual in 3 category. They had the confirmed ,alleged and suspected homosexuals. What they were mainly wanted to find if the ones that were confirmed. The RCMP were not able to confirm anything until they had at least 2 to 3 clear evidence that the person was homosexual. Gays were way more targeted them lesbians. Finding out if a girl was lesbian seemed harder.
Many religious beliefs do not encourage homosexuality in fact it is severely discouraged for example in the Islamic faith they do not allow this because there is no doubt that in Islam homosexuality is considered 'sinful'. Homosexuality as far as Islam is concerned is a profound mistake (as are
* Approximately 77% of Canadians polled felt homosexuals were just like everyone else; 76% felt that homosexuals should have the same rights as heterosexuals.
Activism and social movements are a crucial part of Canadian society when it comes to the representation of human rights and the development of public policies. Canada is considered to be one of the leading countries in the world with respects to their high sensitivity to democracy, freedom of speech and inclusive policies. However, this has not always been the case. Throughout the years, Canada has experienced a series of events that have shifted their public policies to embrace a more liberal approach. Similar to the various waves of feminism movements in the past, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) activists have been able to generate consciousness around their community and bring changes within the public sector.
Throughout the past twelve weeks of taking Women and Gender studies, I have learned extensive amounts of information and will be able to take all of the ideas and concepts learned into action outside of the classroom. Each class, we had various conversations about what was going on in the world around us and how that affects each and every one of us. With the knowledge that I now have, I feel as if I am a much better citizen in Canada since I acquire the knowledge of the history in Canada and the conditions of women’s lives, and also how factors such as race, class, and sexual orientation come into play in daily life. In class, we talked about oppression very often which is, unjust treatment of control. Oppression is a major issue in Canadian society and has many aspects to it. One of the most important pieces of information that I got from taking this course was how destructive power systems function to maintain their
Families were worried that if their child was exposed to homosexuality, or were themselves gay, that their morals would be tarnished and they would embark towards promiscuous behaviour. Books were given to teens providing advice on how to reach “normality”. They were trying to scare kids into believing that heterosexuality was the only option and anything otherwise was not normal. They also wanted to guilt the children into believing that being gay would not only ostracize yourself, but would also shame your family. Families would tell their children that they needed to be heterosexual to defend Canada. They would also use examples from Canadian society as per what would happen if they did end up gay. Examples like how the
Non-Christians believe that love is love no matter the gender of the people. They feel that no judgement should be passed on the people of the gay community. Christians have a different view on this matter. We are raised believing that, according to the Bible, homosexuality is a sin. “Don’t you know that evil people will not receive God’s kingdom? Don’t be fooled. Those who commit sexual sins will not receive the kingdom. Neither will those who worship statues of gods or commit adultery. Neither will men who are prostitutes or who commit homosexual acts.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) “Do not have sex with a man as you would have sex with a woman. I hate that.” (Leviticus 18:22) “Suppose a man has sex with another man as he would have sex with a woman. I hate what they have done.” (Leviticus 20:13) Since Christians have this view that homosexuality is a sin, society tends to believe that we hate all gays. This view is wrong. Christians do not hate gays, we hate the sin they have committed, just as we hate all sin. Christians are seen as looking down on the gays. In reality, Christians see gays as someone that is sinning, and our aim is to help lead sinners out of the way of sinning. This misunderstanding leads to a lot of strife between Christians and non-Christians.
According to a Pew Poll, most religious communities believe same-sex marriage and even homosexuality in general are morally wrong and do not follow their religious beliefs (Waldman, 2003). There is no major religion in the world that has ever altered the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples (Barlow, 2003). In general, it can be said that many religious people have strong views on same-sex marriage, declaring it wrong because of their religious beliefs.
Throughout the years, society has slowly started to embrace gay culture and has begun to accept same-sex marriage in a positive way. It started with the late 1800s and early 1900s where same-sex marriage or gay culture was frowned upon. It then led on to the late 1900s where people began to accept it and fight for those who were treated unreasonably. Later on, it led to the 2000s where majority of the population supported same-sex marriage along with the fact that it was officially legalized in Canada. Views on same-sex marriage have altered in such a drastic way from decades ago to now, but it has definitely changed in an extremely positive manner.
Canada is often seen as a leader in the gay rights movement and it has a long history of providing rights to those that identify as homosexual (BC Teachers’ Federation, 2016; Cotler, 2015). As far back as 1969, Prime Minister Trudeau passed Bill C-150 which amended the Criminal Code to decriminalize “gross indecency” and “buggery”; if committed between two consenting adults if they are over 21 (BC Teachers’ Federation, 2016). The Code was further amended to drop the age of consent for anal sex from 18 and 14 for other sexual activity and it was recognized that a higher age for consent of anal sex was unconstitutional (BC Teachers’ Federation, 2016). Since then there have been many changes to the political and social system in Canada to be able to improve the rights not only individuals whom are part of the LGBTQ community, but also for those whom are in same sex relationships (BC Teachers’ Federation, 2016). As of 2005, same-sex marriage was legalized in Canada; however, there is still debate of whether or not same-sex legalization has legitimized same-sex partnerships within society (Colter, 2015). Many cases that have come before the court regarding homosexuality and same-sex marriages have argued that the actions of society are a direct violation of people’s s.15 rights in the Constitution; which allows for every person to be treated equally and bear the freedom of religion (Supreme Court Judgements, 2004). It will be argued that Canada has created equal rights for
Same-sex marriages have been very controversial since becoming an issue in Canada regarding the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Several people state that same-sex marriages should be legal, while others disagree, saying it should not be permitted. There have been many debates and inquiries about this issue for several years; the MP’s and Parliament will finally settle the problem within the next year or so. Many are in favour of legalizing same-sex marriages in all of Canada due to the violations and infringes upon the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Problems revolving around same-sex marriages have upset many religious groups. These groups believe that same-sex
According to ProCon.org (n.d) It is going against what the bible says. I would say according to the Bible cussing is also a sin but lots of people in the world do it. I would also say according to the bible we are supposed to love our neighbors which is in the ten commandments. Loving your neighbors includes every one not just the people that live next to you. When you make a comment about someone being gay in a mean or hateful way that is not loving your neighbors. The opposition says according to ProCon.org (n.d) “The Catholic church, United Methodist Church, Southern Baptist Convention, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, National Association of Evangelicals, and American Baptist Churches USA all oppose same-sex marriage”. I would say according to Pewforum.org (n.d) “roughly six-in-ten catholics (57%) now support same sex marriage , as do nearly two thirds of white mainland protestants (64%)”. I would also say according to ProCon.org (n.d) “legal marriage is a secular institution that should not be limited by religeouse objections to same-sex marriage. Also according to ProCon .org (n.d) at the first gay marriage ceremony a Catholic and Baptist church both pitched in. The wedding was held at the catholic church, but the cake and decorations were put up and made by Baptist
Homosexuality has become accepted by many in our culture today. PBS estimates that there are 9 million members of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) community (Greve, Joan. “LGBT America: By the Numbers.”). This makes up 3.8% of the US population. Some of these members identify as Christians. So this poses a couple of questions: does the Bible really condemn homosexuality, can you be a gay Christian, and can two people of the same sex be legitimately married? These are important questions for churches to have answers to as the LGBT movement is becoming very popular.
