In today’s society things are ever changing; more specifically, with agriculture. The Ag industry is constantly innovating itself to make production that much better. Farmers, ranchers, and agriculturalists in general, are adapting to these new innovations daily. Those employed in the field of agriculture are constantly changing what they do to meet the demands of the growing population. Two hundred years ago, agriculturalists would not have been able to feed the current population. If our producers had not modified their ways, our lives today would be much different.

In the past, 90 percent of our nation lived on a family farm and either raised or grew their own food; however, today only two percent of the United States population produces food. Back then, one farmer could only feed around twenty people, and today that one farmer can adequately feed over 150 people. With all of the technological advances over time, it is truly amazing to see how farm agriculturalists have come. Agriculture went from horse drawn equipment to tractors that can drive themselves with the touch of a button. Farmers can now use a breeding method where they genetically modify a crops DNA, which causes quite the commotion among consumers, but can be very beneficial to the producers.
One of the mot amazing things about agriculturalists to me is the constant adaptation. Today’s farmers are expected to grow more food, on less land, with less water than they ever have before. Many people concern themselves with the idea that by the year 2050 when the world population surpasses 9 billion people, our farmers will not be able to provide a reliable food source. Farming has been a source of work ever since man has been introduced to the earth, but the past 100 years have been promising in continuing to provide for the needs of the growing population. The people have become more educated, and technology has become much more advanced. The two have come together to boon the land and animals so that they produce to their fullest potential. Based on the output of production, agriculture is perceived as an advance because farmers can produce more food within a smaller area than they could possibly obtain as hunter-gatherers. Harris says that this situation happened since farmers control “the rate of plant reproduction” (Harris 219), which means that immediate adverse consequences could be prevented with the intensification of production. On the other hand, hunter-gatherers, which depend on the availability of natural plants and animals; consequently, can raise their output very little. However, although farmers can produce more food than hunter-gatherers do, the numbers of crops are limited; therefore, when the crops failed, there is risk of starvation.
Alabama Agriculture: Sustaining Future Generations, is the theme of this essay. A few way to sustain future generations of Alabama agriculture is, like farmers they pass there farm and knowledge down there family. Another example is when you go get a job that is related to agriculture like going to work at a cattle farm they teach you what you need to know to do this job. Those are two examples of ways that we can sustain agriculture for future generations.
I am writing to propose to you- the USDA- a solution to the exigent issue of how industrial agriculture is hurting our environment. As I’m sure you're aware, industrial forms of agriculture are harmful to the soil, deplete many nutrients from the environment, and produce harmful chemical wastes. But these values, although crucial to the sustaining of our world's ever-increasing population, are growing more and more detached from the people not involved in agriculture. Although food and fiber production has increased in recent years, providing more bushels per acre and more meat per head of cattle, the agriculture industry has come under fire due to an overwhelming majority of people being totally disconnected from the agriculture industry. Today, we'll examine the primary causes of this disconnect, the negative effects on agriculture and our society as a whole that results from it, and how you can help solve this ever-growing problem.
Most people in America have never thought about where their food comes from or even talked to a farmer or rancher. Times have changed, and so has the family, the community and our environment. And these changes have impacted our lives and earth immeasurably. This is where the factor greed comes in to play, the need for more. This need for more called for extensive measures, measures like fertilizers, pesticides and equipment to work the ground and harvest the crops became necessity. Agriculture became a booming business that did not and still does not promote the well-being of the employee nor the individual let alone the family unit and community. Since 1950 an average farm size has doubled, but the number of laborers decreased substantially and the number of small local farmers has been cut in half. Farmers have been forced to become more efficient and there 's been a reliance on greater chemicals and technology, which has become very extensive and expensive. Sadly, what has been short term expansion has become a long-term threat (Trautmann, 2012). This greed driven increase has led to subtle damaging ramifications that most people are ignorant to. Their needs are being met as quality is being forsaken. Our environment is being squandered. Selfishness abounds.
The agricultural industry: the farms, plants, animals, and farmers, have supported this great country for so long, but lately we have turned our backs on it. Today, we live in a materialistic society, people wanting more and better items, not settling for products that will accomplish the same job.From looking at the fruits and vegetables in the grocery store, we see the bruised or smaller ones left, while the big and brightly colored ones are selected first. Genetic engineering is already providing a more stable solution for agricultural production in the economy to stand on. In nine years (i.e. 1996-2005), profits from genetically modified crops were twenty-seven billion dollars. Those twenty-seven billion dollars were not just in the United States or countries like it, but the profits almost split half and half between first and third world countries (O'Neill 19). In India, for example, cotton yields have jumped to one hundred-fifty percent from the use of genetically modified crops, vastly increasing the farmers’ profits (19). The planting of these crops can really help farmers know what they are going to make every year and plan accordingly. Also, helping the farmers’ expenses is the lack of chemical pesticides needed on the crops and reducing time spent using the pricey traditional breeding methods (Mannion and Morse 749-751). Even if genetically modified crops are not planted in every field, adjoining fields can benefit due to the “halo effect.” The “halo effect” is the ability of pest protection on the genetically modified crops to affect the non-genetically modified crops due to the lack of insects in the genetically modified field (754). The agriculture field is one of the biggest employers, employing over 155 million people in the United States. What do you think about when you hear the word “agriculture?” Many people would say farming, but this is not the most common occupation in this field. Farmers make up a fraction of the agricultural jobs at 900,000, but over 2.1 million people own, rent, and claim farming as a primary source of income. The average farm size has dropped from 460 acres in 1990 to 418 acres in 2007, while the average age of this occupation rose to 57, making this one of the older workforces in the United States.
