After School Start Later Essay

School days should start later in the day because there are many benefits to doing so. Such as improved grades, Test scores, and safer roads because teens won’t be as drowsy if they sleep 8 plus hours.

Does anyone really like going to school earlier than 8:30 am? In a survey among 39,700 public schools in the United States, the average start time was 8:03 a.m. and only 17.7% of these public schools started school at 8:30 a.m. or later. Having schools start later in the day would be beneficial to both the students and staff. By this action, students can concentrate on other activities when outside of school, students can get enough rest, and teachers can have more time to make lesson plans efficiently as well as schools saving money. The first benefit of starting school later is that students can concentrate on other activities when outside of school.

Along with the advantages come the disadvantages. If the school day started later then the student athletes would have their practices ending later than usual, students with jobs and students involved with extracurricular activities would have a harder time finding decent hours and there would be less time for finishing homework. There are also students that are involved in helping take care of their younger siblings, with the school day starting and ending later their whole home life schedule would change.

A disadvantage that would be made is, if the end of the school day is 3:00pm for middle schoolers and it takes 30 minutes for the hallways to clear out, then there wouldn’t be enough time if everyone in the school is supposed to be out of the school by 4:00pm. Which would leave less than half an hour for the students to do whatever they need to. As well as if the student is in a sport and they only practice after school and they have an important game coming up, the students would be at a higher risk of losing during that competition since they don’t have as much time to practice after school. In addition to this, if there are more people staying after school, they would need to hire more bus drivers which would mean an increase in money that is being used every day or even every school

Each year, exhausted teenagers leave themselves to another day of battling their bodies clocks so they can get in class on time. It's outstanding that teenagers who don't get eight hours of rest a night confronts a large number of issues. That is the reason why both the American Institute of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control recommend shifting middle- and high-school start times to 8:30 a.m or later. However, during 2011-2012 school year, the latest statistics accessible — just 17.7 % of the national public middle, high and combined schools met the 8:30 a.m. rule, and almost 40% began before 8 a.m. In California, the normal start time was 8:07 a.m.

Did you know that most Middle and High schools in America start earlier than 8:30am? I chose this topic not because our school has an early start time but because most schools in America start schools earlier than 8:30am. Lack of sleep can have lasting effects on a student’s ability to learn and hinder memory in a student. Today I’m going to tell you why schools should start later in the morning and the benefits of starting early. First, by looking at the current situation of starting schools later and why it’s a good idea to start school later.

Did you know nearly 10% of U.S. schools currently start before 7:30, 40% start school before 8 a.m., and only about 15% start after 8:30. Bus pick-ups start shortly after 5:30 a.m. in some districts, and teens must wake up at 5 or 6 a.m. to get to school on time. Meanwhile, the school day ends earlier. We must start caring because if these students grades start to decrease and their test scores will start getting worse in their morning classes. Studies show that if the brain is active in the morning it increases every learning abilities.

Do you feel like you do not get enough sleep or feel like you can not make it through the school day? For years kids like you complain about having to wake up early to go to school, but for many years they have studied and found out that later school starting times can benefit kids. It has been proven that kids who get at least nine hours of sleep perform better than those who get less that nine hours. As a high school student I do not get enough sleep through the night due to all of the homework and studying I have to do for the next day. I usually go to bed around 11:30 and have to get up at 7:00 in order to get to school on time. I think school should have a later starting time, because with all of the studies, the facts state that later school time makes students more productive and it makes them a better student overall.

School could be a pain, especially forcing yourself to wake up early in the morning just to go to school. We could at least wake up more later than early in the morning if we are going to school. Imagine if you could go to school later than usually. This plan actually help students. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging education policymakers to start middle- and high-school classes later in the morning. The idea is to improve the odds of adolescents getting sufficient sleep so they can thrive both physically and academically. I am in favor of pushing Oregon City High School’s start time to 8:30 and ending later. Many teens who are involved in sports or have another after school activity are always complaining that they are so tired in the mornings. Even as I look around now, I see at least 4 students who are sleeping or are the edge of falling asleep with heavy eyelids— myself included. Even trying to catch the bus at 6:30 a.m in the morning is hard. In the winter, the sun doesn’t even crest the horizon till 7 a.m. It takes a toll on lots of high school students getting up before 6 o’clock just to get ready and be at the bus stop on time. Just reaching over to press the snooze button is as much energy as I can muster up prior to the sun coming up!

Teens usually get 4-6 hours of sleep every night. However, studies show that teens need about 9 ½ hours of sleep. Knowing these facts, are teens really getting enough sleep? The average school day starts as early as 7:40 in the morning! The CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior survey in 2011 showed that 60% of U.S. high school students get fewer than 8 hours of sleep on school nights and 40% get fewer than 6 hours.

During the day most students are failing because of the start time of school. “...teens average fewer than 7 hours per school night by the end of high school, and most report feeling tired during the day” (Wolfson, Carskadon).

Everyone has always hated getting up super early to go to school. As children get older they move to different schools, from elementary to middle to high school, and the start times get earlier. In elementary school it was never a problem getting up but getting older, it always got harder to get up and the days were always longer. Schools start so early in the morning that it is hard to focus and students tend to miss more of their earlier classes and attend all of their later classes. Schools everywhere should start later because it would benefit the students and teachers.

If we were to start school later, academic GPA’s (grade point averages) would definately increase. Isn’t this what we want in our school? It is proven that the more sleep you get, the more awake and alert you actually are. I interviewed Michael Claffey, a sophomore at Newington High School, he stated “ Goooooud.” Also Jorge Premto a sophomore at Newington High School stated “Yes Michael, yes I do believe school should start at nine o’clock am. This will thus help further my education because I will be well rested.” In all, we need school to start later because it will help us with our education.

Kids would be willing to go to sleep with more sleep. A lot of kids have many things to do after school such as: get homework finished, study for a test or quizzes, go to work, attend church events, and play sports.Students would have more time to get their homework done and more time to study as well as have the chance to have a social life outside of school. In high school tests is a big grade usually in each and every students class but in order for the students to get a high grade on the test they need to have the ability to study but if they are tired from getting up for school so early in the morning they will just want to go to bed and forget about studying and then they will just go to class and just hope they do well enough to pass. In a study by the National Parenting Center when they compared a hundred and fifty high students having high grade point average with their peers with lower grade point averages, most of the higher gpa students woke up later on school days, woke up earlier on the weekend, and had less night time awakenings (“Poor sleep, poor grades”). Having school start early means that the morning classes are early as well and most students today come in late just so they can sleep in a little longer so the morning classes will have less attendance. It will give them more time to get to school on time and not be late and frustrated.
