This year I provided my service to an after school program at P.S 75 in the Upper East Side. There they asked for volunteers to help the teachers with handling the young and energetic kids. We only needed ten hours which was not too long and surprisingly went quicker than i hoped, because I got to like those Second grade kids. The program had a good amount of volunteers when I asked if I could help out, but somehow they allowed me to come and help. There were a lot of kids per class and it was just crazy how little teachers they would have if we didn't volunteer. We mainly had to help the kids with their homework, but if they had already done that then we just made sure they didn't hurt themselves. It was a nice experience but nothing life …show more content…
It wasn't until I began my work I learned how service is not only about you giving to others but what you take out of it. We are always taught to live as Jesus and serve the community but people make it out to be hard work. I would not be able to give up everything to do service but I would love to help out different communities because It was actually fun. We are taught we should get paid for our work and therefore makes service seem not worth the time but it is truly a gift for everyone. The time I spent in the after school program helped me understand myself and even though we are tiny in this world our impact on other can be massive. I feel with more time and service I would be able to see myself through others but in the short time we did have I didn't fully understand who I am. Helping out those kids with such little things showed me that I'm not as unimportant as I think I am. The way the kids greeted me made me seem as if I was more than just someone else that was born to just live out my life. It gave me insight on how I can leave an impact even if it is just twenty kids. I learned through them that I have a strong connection with children. After my first day of service they all knew my name and wanted to be with me. Most of the kids couldn't even remember my others friend’s name and so it made me feel special and if I was actually helping them. I am also relived
For my service project, I chose to work at the Meadowlark Meals organization. This organization takes in donations of food and uses them to make meals for children at the school to take home on the weekends. If these children did not take this food home, they would not eat at all over the weekend. I chose to work at this organization because I love kids and it is sad to see them hungry when I have plenty of food to eat. I wanted to make a difference in their lives and I thought that this organization could help me accomplish that.
For my community service, I have been going to Lyndon B. Johnson Head Start Program, or LBJ. At LBJ, it is my responsibility to look after children and clean up after them. The teachers there set up many activities for the kids to work on, most of the time they finger paint. The teachers also set up small field trips. For example, we once went on a field trip to a house that had set up a pumpkin patch and many other activities for the kids. The house we went to wasn’t very far from LBJ. The children had so much fun choosing a pumpkin and playing different games, and I had fun helping them and taking care of them.
In this regard, the most important part of service to me personally is giving back to the community. Volunteering is my way of providing service to others, it is not only effective, but it’s a good way to meet people, to learn, and to develop social skills. By helping or supporting others, I learned and used new skills in communicating with people and I have gained confidence in myself through different interactions. Providing aid to a family in need or helping out an elementary teacher is necessary, because as people it should be our natural tendencies to support one another, and bring aid when aid is due. For example, at Seven Lakes High school I created the Girls for Krause Club. It was given the name the Girls for Krause club after the Krause Center; a center in Katy that fosters girls who have been taken out of their homes due to sexual harassment, parental mistreatment or mental issues. My first visit to the Krause Center was with my youth group at church. I was so touched by all the girls at the center, and how open they were about their situation. I remember one of the girls telling me thank you, for treating her like “a regular person.” This interaction gave me the incentive to create the Krause club, because I wanted to allow other girls my age to interact with these girls and bring attention to a center that wasn’t well known in my community. Moreover, creating the Krause club has been rewarding and a way to showcase
From day one my mom taught me that you will get more satisfaction giving to and helping others than you ever will by just doing things for yourself. I truly believe this. Volunteering to teach swimming lessons, organizing recycled items, and visiting the nursing home are all things I have been involved in and doing each of those I have learned more and more about how important service is. Just recently my classmates and I helped an elderly woman move all of her belongings out of her home and into the 4H building for an auction. The 4H building is on the fairgrounds where I have volunteered to clean up every spring for the last 3 years. Service is very important but also very rewarding. I look toward to doing more service projects in the
While volunteering at Discovery Challenger I have exclusively worked with a blind man named Geno. My service to the Discovery Challenger Program has positively affected the community in that the athletes that required a helper were able to have me as one despite the limited number of volunteers who helped the athletes. Another community service I committed myself to while in high school was the club Life is Delicious. Life is Delicious is a club that between two and three times Year members of the club cook a warm meal at the high school, and then some go to the St. Vincent DePaul Homeless Shelter in Waterbury. At the end of my sophomore year I was named Co-President of the club. As a member of the club I went to all of the cooking and serving activities and was able to help the homeless of Waterbury by giving them a warm meal. The most impactful service I performed in my opinion was during my junior year when I was the organizer for the Penguin Plunge. During my junior year I thought that it would be a good idea for the basketball team to do the Penguin Plunge in order to raise money for Special Olympics Connecticut as I had done so in the previous two years. So, I approached the athletic director
The Spring Creek After School Program has worked with the students and families of PS 346 for over 25 years. The Spring Creek after-school program continues to transform the period of time between the last school bell and before parents return home from work to a time of learning, mentorship, exploration and creativity for it participants. America After 3PM revealed that “10.2 million children across the nation participate in an after-school program” (America After 3PM, 2014, pg. 8). “Yet, 19.4 million children (41%) would be enrolled in a program if one were available in their community” (America After 3PM, 2014, pg. 8).
Because of this I am often given the opportunity to give back and to serve others. One of my favorite parts of serving others is spending time with people and forming unique relationships. I have served in many ways through my school such as through key club, through the softball mentoring program, through the J-Term community service, through being a writing tutor for the English department, and through helping at the middle school track meet. I am fortunate to belong to a church that emphasizes serving others. I have been involved in many service projects through our youth program.
Service in the school and community is an insight to your character and work ethic. I have over 20 hours of community service from many different experiences. Last summer I worked for Camp Barakel, a summer camp, in the kitchen. I assisted in serving food and cleaning. I learned discipline and teamwork through this valuable experience. Not only this I’ve worked with the Elderly in Rehabilitation centers and the patience and nurturing qualities is something that will forever be valuable in my life. Last but not least working as Big Sister or Buddy to a 4th grade girl has given me the chance to positively impact and influence her life as simply as having a friend is immense. All of these service opportunities as added to my character and prepared me for the responsibilities of
I volunteered taking care of children, at a recreation center, where parents couldn’t afford expensive day care. I spent time at feral cat clinics to help reduce the overpopulation of cats. I began volunteering at three square and placing applications to help hospitals and soon plan to spend time with soup kitchens and homeless shelters. Through my community service I learned to communicate better, take on leadership roles and earned life changing opportunities along the way. Through volunteering I grew as a person, I matured, learned responsibility, and realized what I wanted to do with my life.
One of the services I do now is helping with band lessons, and it is a great feeling once the kid you are teaching finally plays something right and tells me how much they appreciate it. It is also a great feeling knowing that your band teacher picked you to be one of the band lessens teacher. Another service I have done is walking the dogs at the Humane Society, which was great because I got the chance to walk and give my attention to a dog that does not get that everyday. It made me happy that I got to give that animal a taste of freedom and love.. The third service I have done was bring therapy animals to a Assisted Living, that was a great experience because I got to make all those people feel happy and excited.
Every summer, I have the opportunity to serve through the summer lunch program. Area churches volunteer to provide lunches for students in Frisco ISD who typically receive a free or reduced lunch during the school year and who may or may not receive lunch everyday during the summer without this program. One week each summer, we help prepare sack lunches and then deliver them to a Frisco ISD school. We are able to hang out with the students, color with sidewalk chalk, and play games. It is a great experience.
I volunteered at the Gonzales City volleyball clinic where I assisted the head coach by helping the young volleyball players learn how to set, serve, hit, and bump. I did this three times a week for three hours each day. The clinic consisted of children from ages 7-14 and each age group went in at different times. Also, I did community service at my local St. Theodore Church by helping in the jumping house at the church carnival. For the past four seasons I helped fundraise at the high school football games by selling food at the stadium snack bar. In every home football game I would stay for more than half of the game in the snack
Volunteering and participating in service projects are two of the most rewarding activities in my opinion. Some people may find it was a hassle or only do it because they have to meet the minimum requirement for school or work. Helping others, for me, has always been somewhat second nature to me. Over many years of volunteering I believe I have developed qualities that will stick with me for life and benefit me in my career. As early as freshman year, in high school, I found myself looking for ways to give back. I started by looking for opportunities within school, where I came across the A+ tutoring program, and so my journey of giving back began. While tutoring, my patience for others really evolved, partly by choice and partly because
I did my community service at Dr. Porter and Clark in Flat Rock during November 2016. They were doing their annual food drive for families that couldn’t afford thanksgiving in neighboring cities. The food drive needed help dividing up food for the families and organizing/making the drive route. I chosed this service because as someone who actively uses food banks on month to month basis, even week to week sometimes it's nice to give
From this experience volunteering I will hopefully be able to continue tutoring or helping students who are struggling in school. I am going to remember this experience when I am a teacher and be able to pay more attention to the students who are struggling and try my hardest to make sure that no one falls too far behind. I will also make sure that all my students get the help that they need in order to succeed. Overall this experience has taught me a lot and enlightened me with new perspectives from where people come from and their home
