The American Quarter Horse is one of the oldest recognized breeds of horses. By the late 17th century, these horses were being raced successfully over quarter mile courses that is why they are called the American Quarter Horse. The Quarter Horse was a breed for performance and had considered thoroughbred blood as well as traits of other lines. In the early 19th century the Quarter Horses were overshadowed by thoroughbred which ran better over longer distances. But, Quarter Horses soon found a new acceptances in the western and southern United States as a stock horse.

There is a trail down the road in Delaware where I enjoy taking my dog for a walk. It is a beautiful, five-mile loop traversing cornfields, thick patches of forest, steep hills and flowing streams; a wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the suburban lifestyle and spend some time amongst the peacefulness of nature. It is not a complete escape, however, for I am not the only person that knows of the trail- it seems to also be a favorite of horseback riders. Often times I will encounter a rider or two at some point during my walk and, without fail, I will be in awe of the size and majesty of the horse. What an incredible, gentle beast it is. Standing next to a horse, you cannot help but gawk at the bulging, toned muscles and long, agile legs. It is truly an athlete with a rare combination of strength and speed. Yet, they are gentle and kind and have therefore been joined at the hip with humans; today, nearly all horses have been domesticated. So I find myself
There is a stereotypical image of horses found in a slaughter hold: they are either skinny, sick, or old. So why should the U.S. prevent the practice? According to the USDA, most of the horses found in a slaughterhouse are in perfect health and are formally owned by people as pets. Many owner’s explanations as to why they decided to send their horse or horses to slaughter is simply because they cannot afford to take care of them anymore, they no longer have a use (lameness) and convenience. Although horses often can be pricey to own, there are other options to getting rid of them as opposed to shipping them off to a slaughter plant. For example, selling them to another person who will give them a home, or even donating them to a horse rescue
Is the slaughtering of horses the most humane method? Horses get treated in brutal and cruel ways on a regular basis, but slaughtering is a painful and disturbing action to imagine. They do not deserve this treatment and yet, they still allow it around the world. The slaughtering of horses remains a commonly used method that has devastated the people that revolve around horses.

I watched as the flashes of orange lights from cars raced past me through the city, and knew there were no signs of any possibilities that there would be a place to keep a horse. I lived in northern Virginia near Washington D.C., where the city was filled with gigantic, tall office buildings with gray and gloomy windows. I could smell the gasoline and smoke coming from the cars’ exhaust. I felt the cool breeze as cars whipped past me, and the air tasted like millions of littered cigarettes on the side of the road. However, there were some horse stables, but they were far away, and the payment required for horseback riding lessons was a ridiculously large price. Of course, that never stopped me from continuously asking
I see my future in the Quarter Horse industry as an equine geneticist. My goal is to be working towards preventing HERDA from limiting the selection of stallions for certain mares. I also see myself as breeding, raising, and training Quarter horses for Cutting, team roping, and barrel racing. My wish is to continue to breed characteristics that I admire most: intelligence, athleticism, and
