It can occur in any form, slightly stressful or devastating painful. It can happen to anyone, rich, poor, big or small. Adversity is inevitable. Most people would consider it very negative with no benefits, but they are not aware of its hidden effect. Roman poet Horace suggests that adversity can cause a person to demonstrate certain talents, which would not have been present if not for their misfortune. People and characters in any literary work experience unfortunate events and put through difficult situations that they need to overcome. Adversity uncovers their concealed gifts that help them through their hardships. One of the main characters, John Proctor, faces many adversities throughout the play. He has to overcome his emotional and moral problems, which changes and develops his character into someone different from before. At the beginning of the play, Proctor appears an average person, respected in his community for his honesty. Miller describes him as “a kind man- powerful of body, even- tempered and not easily led…” (Miller 19). Later on in the play, a shift in his character shows when he learns of the many accusations of witchcraft, one including his wife Elizabeth. The unfortunate events he was experiencing brought out his characteristic of leadership and he becomes an influential leader in the effort to save his wife. Towards the end of the novel, John faces an important moral choice, he can tell the truth about his wife and die honorably or he cannot tell the truth and live the rest of his life as a lie. He shows his respectful and honest character by telling the truth and dying. The adversity that John experiences proves very powerful, but his morally right mindset stands out even more than before. Here at Greenbrier High School, we have over 1500 students. Out of those 1500, many of us are in challenging and rigorous classes while also participating in extracurricular activities. Many are able to have outstanding grades, while also being active in their school and community. The stressful situations we experience, or adversity, heightens our ability to do well under stress and continue to stay determined. Personally, when I have a large amount of homework or am under a great deal of stress it makes me more determined on performing my best. Without the pressure from my classes, I may not have been able to maintain my high average. From my experiences with adversity, it proves to have a beneficial effect on the way I handle demanding
John Proctor is a central character who faces immorality and a difficult moral dilemma, and also is the main protagonist in “The Crucible” and was one of the main characters that were misdemeanor and sentenced to death. He was a strong and hardworking farmer who was known and respected by the people of Salem, Massachusetts, because of his power and his riches. However, he is very flawed, for he has committed adultery and refuses to go to church, even though his children are not baptized. Despite his flaws, Proctor does show growth in both positive and negative ways. He chooses to stay true to himself and his beliefs, even if it means sacrificing his own freedom and the well-being of his family.
During the Crucible, in the town of Salem, everybody is in fear of witchery. Lots of drama and fear has been going around about people committing witchcraft. In Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, Proctor, is a rule breaking man who changes from being a cheater to a man who has a change of heart and wants to save people who are being falsely accused of witchery by admitting his own sins. John wasn't always a kind man, trying to do something good for the community. Before he changed, Proctor could be described as a cheater, a narcissist, and a brave man.

John Proctor is the respectable and proud farmer in The Crucible. His relationship with his wife Elizabeth is strained when it revealed to her that John Proctor has cheated with Abigail Williams, the seventeen year old girl. Abigail knowingly tempts John Proctor to continue their relationship as she says “I have seen you looking up, turning in your loneliness. Do you tell me you’ve never looked up at my window” (Miller 29). Similar to Ethan, John Proctor aims to be good in his life but his faults ultimately lead to his downfall.. His stern mentality pushes him to try to reveal the truth about the girls accusing people of witchcraft. He committed adultery which he truly regretted, he died because of this sin, and he tries to ratify his sin as best as he can. He sacrificed his life to save his name and to keep his honor. John Proctor also sacrifices his life so that his children can look up to him as an example which is why he is a tragic hero. Abigail Williams is a cowardly girl who doesn’t want to get in trouble for her foolish acts, who is then is offered a way to blame others for her actions by giving the names of “witches” in the town. John Proctor starts out as a cowardly man who cheated on his wife and didn’t want to give away Abigail’s secret that her accusations were false, but he ends up being a man that will die for his friends and the goodness of his name.

As a result of this, he struggled with a major internal conflict throughout the play.
