is a powerful vessel in which, the poet can express their adversity. Adversity is a difficult or unpleasant situation, and there are many poems that represent this theme but the 2 poems that I will be speaking about today are; 'Caged Bird' by Maya Angelou and 'The Rose that grew from Concrete' by Tupac Shakur. Caged bird is a poem about two birds in vastly different situations whilst 'The rose that grew from concrete' is about persistence in the face of adversity.

Maya Angelou was an American poet who was certainly a very inspirational figure. She had a difficult childhood and encountered many of life's challenges. Although she encountered these obstacles she managed to not only overcome them but use them, to become a very successful poet and activist. In a time where racial segregation was the norm in the United States of America you would have been very hard-pressed to find a poet, or singer, or actor who was not white. Maya Angelou overcame the racial stigma and adversity put on people of colour to become a very successful poet and writer. …show more content…

This poem is an extended metaphor. The poem was written in the times of racial segregation. The poet does not mention any races directly but it is quite clear that she is showing how the freedoms given to whites are opposed to those given to the people of colour. In the first stanza, the poet illustrates how the free bird, or white race, is untroubled. It also shows how the white race has the audacity to think they own society and have the power to govern it unjustly. In the line ''(the free bird) dares to claim the sky" the poet is showing how whites demonstrated extreme discrimination and prejudice toward African-Americans.
