Erin Allbritton 4/19/17 BIO103 Professor Van Breukelen Chapter 10-Review Questions
1. What are some advantages and disadvantages of OIL and SOLAR energy sources? The advantages of oil and solar energy sources are how concentrated they are, availability, safety, and versatility. While the disadvantages are hazard potential, environmental damage, and cost.
2. What is per capita energy use and what is total energy use for a country and how do these differ? For a country, per capita energy use relates to the average energy per person and total energy use relates to
3. Why is it important to consider both per capita and total energy use when thinking about global energy use? It’s important to consider per capita and total energy use with global energy use
4. How do the United States, China, and Kenya compare in total energy consumption? In per capita energy consumption? For the United States, China, and Kenya compare in the total energy

What are some forms of energy storage? What are the benefits of these? The forms of energy storage are superconducting magnetic energy storage, compressed air energy storage, electrochemical energy storage (batteries), pumped hydroelectric storage, thermal energy storage, and kinetic energy storage. The benefits are solar and wind can be intermittent; if there is too little of one energy storage and large coal/nuclear plants are more sufficient with constant energy output, if there is too much forms of energy storage.
9. What are the four objectives of an effective energy policy? Objective 1: Increase Energy Efficiency and Conservation. Objective 2: Secure Future Fossil Fuel Energy Supplies. Objective 3: Develop Alternative Energy Sources. Objective 4: Meet the First Three Objectives Without Further Damage to the Environment.
10. What is the national energy policy of the United States? The national energy policy of the United States is called The National Appliance Energy Conservation Act
There are many advantages of solar power, one is we can rely on the sun showing up day and out which make it the most renewable source. Solar does not require sound, has very little maintenance and has no pollution effect on the earth. A disadvantage, as I previously mentioned, is the upfront cost to get the solar panels. Although they are said to be easy to install there could be an additional cost of getting the roof of your house ready and able to have solar panels install.
How much of our global energy supply do nuclear power, biomass energy, and hydroelectric power contribute? How much of our global electricity do these three conventional energy alternatives generate?
Energy has easily become one of the most important necessities for our everyday lives. Without it we would simply not be able to have transportation or be able to gather any of our other resources that we depend on. If at anytime our energy supply ceases or no longer attainable the results may be horrific. However, it is quite easy to keep this from happening, It is crucial that our current population realize the importance of sustaining our present non-renewable resources. An examination of all the present energy issues and human impacts of energy conservation along with the a resource plan will show importance of energy
The stage for a deeper integration of Renewable Energies in the UK was set by a number of these policies which has evolved over the years. These policies however were not delivering maximum efficiency when compared to other policies in other European countries. For instance, the inefficiency of some of the policy mechanisms when compared to those obtainable in Germany had been severally argued. The Energy White Paper 2003 was largely a response to the future of the UK Energy industry drawing from the failures of these past policy implementations.
In the same manner, in Ontario, the Ministry of Energy (DOE’s counterpart) establishes the energy policy for the province and “ensures that Ontario’s electricity needs are met in a sustainable manner” (Ministry of Energy, (n.d.),
The following paper is a comprehensive energy policy platform for a candidate running the 2020 presidential election. This candidate is considered to be a centrist when it comes to energy policy. They have liberal and conservative ideas depending on the issues. Overall, the candidate would like to instate a plan that preserve American energy independence while also becoming a leader in the international green energy market. Cutting taxes for green energy companies, instituting a carbon tax, revitalizing the nuclear energy market and raising CAFE standards for the automotive industry are the cornerstone pieces of this policy. Long term goals include phasing out all coal plants, reducing dependence on natural gas, developing affordable
What generation will it be? Ours, your children’s, or your grandchildren; that will be the last that faces the consequences of the continued use of fossil fuels Let’s talk about energy the kind that we currently use and the ones that will eventually save our planet and our families. How will this happen you ask? By curbing our use on fossil fuels emplacing strict guidelines on waste. I know you think it’s a big planet
Conference Focus: Implement a new policy within five years to move into renewable energy, with a focus on solar power, while decreasing the use of fossil fuels. This policy will examine the barriers to implement new renewable energy technologies that will decrease the carbon dioxide emissions and identify ways to overcome these barriers through incentives, tax breaks, and attitudinal changes.
The United States thrives or declines based in large part on its access to energy. It is also important for the American people to remember that many of the lifestyle changes that would need to be implemented in order to reduce fossil fuel use could have been undertaken many generations ago and simply were not. Therefore, we have a responsibility to our children to consider what American energy policy should be concerning exploration for oil in the Arctic, to ensure that failure to make energy use changes in the past does not simply become a can that we kicked down the road to our children. The ability to change the way cities use energy as they light streets and currently supply power to business for private advertising signs from a central grid source, over to a system of local solar panel power generation will take a lot of social education and political will. Absent major changes in the way the public thinks and political
America should pursue alternative energy sources because “With only 5 percent of the worlds population, the United States consumes almost one-quarter (22.5%) of global energy”. (((Josef Bram, 15))) With such a small percentage of the world’s population and still one of the largest consumers of energy the U.S should be looking for new and better ways to generate energy. Currently The U.S’s energy is supplied using traditional sources. According to Canadian scientist and policy analyst Vaclav Smil “Todays energy 29% from coal, 33% from oil and gas, and 33% from soft-energy (alternative sources)” (((Smil, 47))) Most of the energy we use on a daily basis is not produced using clean methods. Some alternative energy sources that are already in place within the United Stats are wind, solar, and hydraulic.
1. Compare the US with a developing country of your choice. Describe primary emissions sources for each country. For example, does the most pollution come from energy production? Vehicles? Industry? Farming?
In the Bush/Cheney plan, several ideas were mentioned on how to have a more sustainable energy policy; each idea mentioned was also described in great detail along with figures to give a clearer vision of predictions being made within the plan. Early into his Presidential career, Bush established the National Energy Policy Development Group which concentrated on developing a natural energy policy. The main issue with America’s energy use is that the supply of energy does not meet the demand of energy; the amount of energy America needs/uses is not nearly as close to the amount produced. As America’s population grew so did the economy and no one knew exactly how to deal with the increases. With such increases it made it difficult to come
The Energy Policy Act (EPA) of 2005 got pass by the U.S. Congress on July 29, 2005 and was signed by President George W. Bush on August 8, 2005. This Act addresses energy production in United States as an effort to overcome energy problems by providing loan guarantees and tax incentives for entities that develop or use innovative technologies that avoid the production of greenhouse gases.
The United States is the second biggest consumer of fossil fuels and the biggest consumer of renewable energy. However, our renewable energy usage is only 19 percent of our total energy usage. We may be number one, but only have that number at 19
The United States clearly consumes more energy than needed, but it is not all due to wastefulness and apathy. For example, if one were to compare the US with the European Union, he/she would see that the US consumes about twice as much energy. However, such an observer must take into account other factors, such as population density. The US as a whole is four times less dense in population than the EU, and therefore needs more energy for basic tasks such as commuting. In addition, the US has greater climate extremes than the nations in the EU and therefore consumes more energy for heating and air conditioning. The same facts work when comparing the US to China or Japan (Lehrman 2). Nevertheless, there is a problem in the United States that must be addressed.
