However what isn’t an American?
An American isn’t someone who isn’t a native citizens of the United States but what does it mean to “Americans”. Many American don’t like people that hurt others and take advantage of others. America has forbidden many thing puting laws in place to keep people from doing acts of violence and if you act upon these acts you will be punished. What really is an American? Being an American is not just being born in the USA as most people would think, that is just the technicality of it. For centuries Americans have defined themselves not by their racial, religious, and ethnic identity but by their common values and belief in individual freedom. Americans have equal rights no matter where they come from. “Of every hue and caste I am, of every rank and religion... I resist anything better than my own diversity,” (Whitman) Walt Whitman is saying that no matter the color of your skin, your rank/wealth in society, or your religion, you are just as equal as everybody else. I believe that being an American means many different things many different people. To me being an American means to have certain freedoms that American citizens have that people around the rest of the world do not have the privilege to do or have. Like every United States citizen has unalienable rights, every single United States citizen is an American, and that the majority of people will have good living conditions.
Conversely, many believe that being an American comes only from an emotional standpoint and that no other classification is needed. As declared by Jose Antonio Vargas of the Huffington Post, “What it means to be an American is less about who you are than what you are about— how you live your life, how you contribute to this country, how you pledge allegiance to a flag hoping and praying it will make room for you.” Albeit this emotion may contribute to Americanism, it cannot operate by itself. Without citizenship, one cannot be considered American. Going back to the original definition, to be an American is to be, “a native inhabitant of the U.S.: a U.S. citizen.” Anything past this denotation is simply an opinion and cannot be used when coming up with an unambiguous definition of the
